Text of the page (random words):
page 2 skip to content menu expanded collapsed courses about me historical technical contemporary using a staff for geometric pattern mosaics here you can see a pattern in progress from a few years back where i was trying to work out how to mark the staff at the bottom centre using a staff means you do not have to draw out the pattern you set the tesserae straight into the cement you can see some circles drawn in on the left to be able to check my staff marking is correct working now i do not need to use those everything i need is marked on the staff the lines marked a b and the width are the measurements i need and what is put on the staff if you want to learn this now then i would teach you without any drawing out except for the most basic lines such as the width roman mosaic shop posted by romanmosaicist november 19 2019 november 19 2019 posted in general news leave a comment on using a staff for geometric pattern mosaics pattern perception and distance a slightly blurred photo of a mosaic in the alexandria national museum egypt although the design is a pattern of scales of increasing size set in concentric circles notice how from this distance and the way they have used different colours it gives it the appearance of a star shape just by changing colours you can completely change the appearance of a design image copyright to magdy ashry posted by romanmosaicist november 18 2019 november 18 2019 posted in geometric patterns roman mosaic pattern database tags geometric geometric mosaics geometric patterns mosaic mosaic patterns roman leave a comment on pattern perception and distance keystone cuts on a curve try to avoid using half keystones by this i mean cutting only one side the shape you are left with leads the eye in only one direction dependant on the way you see it it can be to the left or right a full keystone where both sides are cut in allows the movement to be perceived to be in both directions do i sometimes use these yes i do but i won t intentionally cut them that way on most work i have keystones and triangles already cut so i use whatever i pick up to avoid wasting time remember in comparison to the ancient craftspeople we are much neater in any work we do these days it s a modern trait therefore we need to work to a higher standard in our application of the rules just because any inconsistencies will be so much more apparent posted by romanmosaicist november 17 2019 posted in the work tags andamento mosaic roman rules leave a comment on keystone cuts on a curve when were the rules andamento of roman mosaics first used an example of a swastika meander border taranto museum italy notice that the borderline rule is not used here where you would expect it to be either side of the diagonal lines although this particular pattern is occasionally set like this it does make you wonder when we first see the rules being used to answer this i think we would need to look at the greek pebble mosaics and particularly the examples in the transition from all pebble 5th century bce to pebble and cut stone 3rd century bce mosaics with pebbles having round shapes you have much softer lines so there would have been no need for them it is only where you have cut square shaped tesserae being used that you get the effect or the sharper more discordant lines roman mosaic shop posted by romanmosaicist november 16 2019 november 16 2019 posted in historical tags geometric patterns mosaic roman roman mosaic 1 comment on when were the rules andamento of roman mosaics first used naming geometric patterns the standard text that we have for classifying geometric patterns found in roman mosaics has to be the two volume set by balmelle c and others le décor géométrique de la mosaïque romaine the names they have used are very correct in terms of the geometry seen but this can make then quite difficult to understand by those without a specialist knowledge also some patterns do not appear to be named and some you will see have different names used by different writers what i find best is to look at the pattern and see how it breaks down to its separate parts this way you can see if there is a basic shape that has been altered or added to you can then use the name of the basic shape and then name the additions if you look at the image here you should be able to identify the patterns named below 1 solomon s knot top left 2 solomon s knot with interwoven square bottom right 3 solomon s knot with interwoven looped corner square bottom left 4 looped end solomon s knot top right there are many more like this where they are variations on the same basic shape if you want to learn how to draw these patterns then visit the online store just click on the link below the online shop posted by romanmosaicist november 15 2019 november 15 2019 posted in geometric patterns roman mosaic pattern database tags geometric mosaic roman leave a comment on naming geometric patterns setting out part of a geometric pattern this is a useful tip if you are setting out just a small area from a geometric pattern you use a drawing of the pattern and slide it underneath your baseboard so you can see how the tesserae continue in the right direction this is why i say you never work on a small mosaic whatever the size of the actual mosaic baseboard you must always have a picture in your mind of the rest of the mosaic floor stretching out away from you this way you are always working on a full floor and so the techniques you use are the correct ones roman mosaic shop posted by romanmosaicist november 14 2019 november 14 2019 posted in geometric patterns the work tags geometric geometric patterns mosaic roman leave a comment on setting out part of a geometric pattern following the pattern taranto museum italy shield of scales look at the scales just right of centre and see how the pattern goes wrong another example of how they did not seem to have a problem with this sort of thing being neat and correct is very much a modern trait when you look at any geometric pattern just follow it with your eye once you get the hang of it it is surprising what you can see image by permission maria de cataldo r oman mosaics shop posted by romanmosaicist november 13 2019 november 13 2019 posted in general news leave a comment on following the pattern travertine the problem with travertine travertine is a type of limestone that is formed by the deposits from mineral springs as these calcify they leave the air bubbles which results in the small holes when you use this stone in a mosaic the holes on the surface take up the grout which gives the effect you see in the photo there are only three shades in travertine that are worth using yellow brown and red specialist mosaic suppliers are usually quite good in that they will do the sorting for you but if you buy the tiles to cut up i would never do this without seeing all the tiles first in one box you might only find 1 3 of the tiles of the good enough colour the rest will be a sort of dirty beige colour the yellow is quite vibrant and better than others such as giallo atlantide or giallo reale the brown is a mid brown shade and the red is a mid shade but i would be much quicker to use rojo alicante though so travertine is ok to use but be aware of the pitting on the surface and don t buy full size tiles without seeing all the ones you will get shop roman mosaics posted by romanmosaicist november 12 2019 november 12 2019 posted in stone leave a comment on travertine from one to six strands from double to six strand guilloche border pattern you can see how one strand follows through the whole way i have just added more at each stage what does this tell us no idea i was just messing about when i did this but it looks nice posted by romanmosaicist november 8 2019 posted in general news leave a comment on from one to six strands filling in irregular shapes going on from a previous post about not being too particular about how well you look to cut your tesserae this is about filling in shapes with a number of tesserae you can always get irregular sections to fill in in a mosaic these are usually the last parts and when you do you must remember where s my line even if it s just small areas to fill you still need to do it in a systematic way don t just jam the tesserae in to fill the gap the drawing at the top shows how this has been done at the bottom even though the shape may not be big enough to warrant using a borderline you need to use lines of tesserae wherever you can you have to remember that we work to the gold standard of mosaic work our modern mindset means we will always be doing much neater work than the ancient mosaicists so apply that neatness across the whole of your mosaic shop here
