2 years i have been making a very special film titled starlite the making and taking of brooklyn s oldest black owned non discriminating bar in 1959 a decade prior to manhattan s stonewall riots across the bridge in crown heights brooklyn the starlite lounge was founded as a non discriminating establishment for gay people of color a half century later it was a shock to the neighborhood and the gay community when the starlite now the oldest black owned gay bar in the country was given notice to vacate and was ultimately forced to close its doors starlite follows the eviction of this legendary community institution while also tracing back its rich history over 5 decades starlite poses questions about the importance of safe space in marginalized communities and asks what is a before the emergence of a visible gay rights movement two years ago aileen hunt age 83 lost her lover of over 40 years florence sterling to lung cancer she began to process her grief through the transformation of florence s garden into a living shifting memorial the garden has become both symbolic of florence and a space in which aileen is able to grieve and continue their relationship the house was damaged from a fire next door that took a life the house became vacant after the landlord failed to repair the damages from the fire soon after a group of friends began living in the house and making their own repairs the burned house next door still stands in ruins spaces have different lives and layers when a space is reconstructed new layers are added but remnants of what once was there still remain under the surface this piece examines the significance of these different layers and of reclaiming underutilized space during tough economic times through an exploration of a
