absolutely no hope at all going round saying plague on all their houses might make us less controversial guests round the dinner table but it makes us more depressed people all that energy all that creativity all that hope gone the prospect of building slowly from within the labour party is now entirely defunct we don t have time for slow movement building and we don t have the heart for it either we are all spent from 5 years of internal warfare defending one of if not the best leader the labour party ever had the disgraceful treatment of jeremy corbyn and left wing members hasn t sparked a desire to reclaim the labour party instead it has sparked a mass exodus that is simply human nature no stirring battle cries from well paid labour socialist mps will inspire financially hard pressed socialists to part with their money to fund a party to which they no longer feel any affinity and time to spark real and lasting change is running out we would need decades to rebuild from within the party we don t have decades the climate crisis is now and it is urgent the housing crisis is now and it is urgent the national health service crisis is now and it is urgent if i believed months to either attack the left or make clear his lack of vision via a number of boring relaunches summarised by even more boring vacuous slogans why do that if you are then going to run with exciting socialist ideas for the optics maybe a case of smoke and mirrors knowing the policies are popular but the idea of socialism isn t if that s the case the man has the integrity of a romance scammer and i wouldn t trust him to enact radical socialist policies even if he suddenly claimed them for his own i do however have immense trust and respect in jeremy corbyn millions of people do he s a man of honour and integrity he s a man who is not scared of the establishment of talking truth to power and that s what our political landscape needs right now i am under no illusions that a new party headed by jeremy would suddenly surge to victory in a ge what it would do is pose a threat to a far too comfortable labour party waiting for their inevitable turn at power the tories have been in for 13 years next year and they are living on borrowed time the anger felt over starmer s remain policy which drove many lifelong labour voters either into tory arms or to not vote at all in 2019 is on the wane many will swing back to labour whoever is leader especially after the recent tory scandals which have tripped over each other in their frequency so starmer is sitting there rubbing his hands in arrogant glee knowing all he has to do is not cock up too badly and his time will come and when it does he will claim it was his purge of corbyn and the hard left that won it then it will be business as usual fuscia labour will tweak the status quo but they won t change it dramatically any positive changes they implement will be nice and easy to reverse for their tory friends when their inevitable turn comes around again this revolving door of not much changing can only be challenged by a new party and that new party has to be headed by jeremy corbyn why jeremy because he is the most unifying figure the left have because he s the most inspiring political figure for generations because he has the political weight and credibility to light that spark his age isn t an issue bernie sanders was 6 years older when he ran for president the only issue is if jeremy wants to do it obviously if he doesn t we will have to accept and respect it no one would blame him after the lies and smears he endured for the last 6 years i would however urge him to give it serious consideration those lies and smears are never going away he will never be the safe elder statesman he s too threatening a figure for that to happen so he might as well run with that anti establishment reputation and use it to force change on the status quo he is after all a tireless fighter for peace and two years ago my path took an unexpected turn when my daughter shared her suspicions about her partner who displayed hyperactivity and frequent job changes after an online assessment the results pointed to a high likelihood of him having adhd intrigued i took the same test to find out what result someone without adhd would get only to be shocked when it suggested i might have adhd as well this revelation challenged my preconceived notions about adhd i had previously associated it with hyperactive little boys struggling at school yet as i delved into research my misconceptions crumbled adhd doesn t fit a single mould it s a multifaceted condition with both inattentive and hyperactive symptoms forgetfulness distractedness struggles with concentration and focus and sometimes having too much focus feeling forever restless and overwhelmed or under overstimulated a genuine phobic response towards anything boring rejection sensitive dysphoria where you feel pain and terror at the thought of criticism or perceived rejection these are just the tip of a very deep iceberg my journey of self discovery revealed the complexity of this condition particularly in adults and especially in women and girls who more commonly mask their symptoms to avoid negative judgement looking back i recognised patterns in my life that aligned with adhd symptoms organisation and planning had been lifelong challenges maintaining focus especially on complex tasks was elusive forgetfulness and distractability haunted me leading to countless misplaced items and anguish over forgotten please and thankyous appointments email and text replies or names despite knowing that person for years the tediousness of routine tasks inflicted genuine pain conversations especially small talk often left me overwhelmed and burnt out i grappled with executive functioning causing my home management to be sporadic in childhood i demonstrated classic signs of adhd like impatience and forgetfulness i d stubbornly carry all my toys upstairs despite knowing i d drop them i never learnt from my mistake impulsivity took a toll waiting for a bus was unthinkable so i d walk to the next bus stop only to miss it and be late for school this pattern combined with struggles in homework schoolwork in general and constant hobby shifts painted a vivid picture coping in the workplace was challenging due to my fear of criticism leading me to work for myself life itself felt overwhelming and i had long considered myself a flawed individual i used to say being myself was hardwork still the strength of empathy and a desire for fairness which often accompanies adhd fueled my passion for politics and we all know where that led yes i m talking about jeremy corbyn s leadership one year later january 2024 i overcame my impostor syndrome a common struggle for those with adhd enough to approach my gp about my suspicions armed with the asrs checklist i had filled in and a detailed symptom list from childhood to the present day i requested an assessment to my relief i was referred to psychiatry uk for an nhs funded assessment highlighting the need to address the inadequate provision of adhd assessments within the nhs in house assessments often mean many years languishing on the waiting list i undertook numerous online questionnaires and my husband as someone who has known me very well for a long time was asked to add his thoughts about my symptoms via questionnaires also during the actual in person part of the assessment the psychiatrist delved into my life experiences mental health history and childhood his diagnosis on the 1st of september 2023 of combined adhd shed light on the unique blend of inattentive and hyperactive adhd characteristics i have always displayed without knowing they had anything to do with adhd medication specifically elvanse became an option and the difference it made was transformative stimulant medication which paradoxically calms the adhd mind offered me more focus and control over my thoughts it helped me organise tasks focus on conversations and reduces my usually constant fidgeting even my sleep pattern improved previously i d lie awake every night for hours with racing thoughts an experience that i assumed was universal but now know is related to adhd unfortunately a national shortage of elvanse led to a switch in medication to a short acting stimulant which has not been as effective due to the inconveniences of taking it 3 times daily leaving room for it to be missed or forgotten but it is still better than nothing adhd a condition of extremes leads to bouts of hyperfocus on topics of interest while making mundane tasks unbearable it s a common precursor to anxiety depression and even substance abuse studies have shown structural differences in the adhd brain emphasising the biological basis of this condition with a deficit in dopamine being the most commonly known and understood the notion that 40 of the prison population might have adhd and an average lifespan 13 years shorter than the average highlights the real world consequences of undiagnosed individuals my creative thinking typical of people with adhd often generated ideas i couldn t execute due to the avoidance of boring and detailed admin work while some may view adhd as a superpower the prevalence of low self esteem anxiety and depression among undiagnosed individuals demonstrates the suffering that arises when support and validation are lacking the financal impact can be huge due to its often times negative impact on work as well as the often accompanying adhd tax caused by impulse shopping or the multitude of lost items we have to replace raising awareness particularly for women and girls who remain underdiagnosed is paramount only 0 5 of the population is diagnosed while 3 5 may have adhd assessments should be adequately funded and all bought in house the nhs is not saving money outsourcing their assessments and it s certainly not saving money on people with undiagnosed and untreated adhd when so many are struggling with their mental health which requires medication which doesn t always help because they are not treating the right condition that s what has inspired me to write this article and share my diagnosis publicly as awareness grows so does self recognition and the opportunity for life changing interventions accepting my adhd diagnosis has been a watershed moment in my life i am more compassionate toward myself past and present having moved beyond the self deprecating labels so commonly attributed to those of us with adhd i am grieving for what might have been had i discovered my adhd earlier in my life than 53 at the same time i am celebrating finding out at all when it s obvious to me now that my dad who died at 59 had adhd and never received any help or support with that the world isn t designed for those with adhd but understanding it has allowed me to start to live more authentically and i want that for all my fellow adhders adhd rather than being a character flaw is a neurological reality with growing awareness perhaps society can embrace neurodiversity more
