year is 25 years on still needed highlighting the continued need for overdose prevention and awareness i work in harm reduction so here s some stuff to know one overdose can be prevented if you are a drug user there are ways to use that reduce potential harm these include not using alone using drug testing kits and exchanging used needles for clean ones through needle exchange programs however these harm reduction tactics all require buy in from communities and local governments it is important to continue advocating for these resources to reduce the risk of overdose two know the signs of overdose and how to respond possible signs of an opioid overdose include being unable to wake slow or shallow breathing choking or gurgling sounds discolored lips and or nails and very small pupils if you are not sure treat it like an overdose give naloxone see next paragraph if available call 911 keep the person breathing place them on their side and stay until emergency help arrives three naloxone narcan saves lives naloxone brand name narcan is a safe medication often in nasal spray form that can reverse an opioid overdose when it is given in time anyone can carry it and potentially save a life ask about it at your local pharmacy in the us you don t need to have a prescription in order to get it i m sorry that i don t know about its availability in other countries there are
