strip i don t know if i ever stayed up late enough to watch it but i immediately hear the finger snapping theme song as soon as i hear that title and then there s a show that was introduced in 1959 that was not even in the top 30 back then but 64 years later i d be willing to bet that most of you would remember both the title and the theme song more readily than any of the top shows it had a few different intros but here s one of them there is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man it is a dimension that is vast as space and as timeless as infinity it is the middle ground between light and shadow between science and superstition and it lies between the pit of man s fears and the summit of his knowledge this is the dimension of imagination it is an area which we call the twilight zone prior to creating the twilight zone rod serling was an established hollywood writer who was frustrated with the censorship of 1950s tv for example one of his programs featured a picture of the new york city skyline the program was sponsored by ford motors and they insisted that the skyline not include the chrysler building but some of the censorship was more serious he wrote a teleplay in 1956 and let slip that it was intended to be an allegory for the emmett till lynching when the segregationist white citizens council heard that they threatened to boycott the show s sponsor the company caved in and demanded dozens of script changes basically turning it into a story about a really weird town that s obviously totally different from any normal american community he tried again with another program and the show s sponsors chopped up the script like a room full of butchers at work on a steer serling realized the only way he could comment on modern events on tv in 1959 was to move into the world of imagination a place we all know as the twilight zone if he wasn t allowed to comment on materialism and alienation among real americans he would talk about it through an army of animated mannequins to address gambling addiction he brought a one armed bandit to life to pursue a vegas patron and he finally came close to his emmett till allegory with an episode that reveals that all we need is a little suspicion to be persuaded to destroy ourselves he closes the episode with this postscript there are weapons that are simply thoughts attitudes prejudices to be found only in the minds of men for the record prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and the thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own good thing speaking 002 inches long traveling in a teaspoon or so of fluid a microscopic wad containing centuries of familial history that is only half the story when it comes to the start of a new life while a woman contributes a similar volume of history she is also required to spend the better part of a year providing for the growth and upkeep of the new life sharing everything she eats drinks and breathes plus whatever spare minerals she has lying around but for the guy a little dab ll do ya job done but not really some men share themselves indiscriminately assuming or hoping that some barrier prohibits the exchange of genetic information the fusion of family matters some men spread their seed thinking only of themselves not really caring whether or not it finds fertile ground they have no interest in tending that garden some men give of themselves so that others might have children they might be in it for the money but i m sure many are glad to lend a helping hand to those in need but for the most part those are not the men we celebrate on father s day we celebrate the guys who are or were there for us the father you honor may not have been the person from whose loins you sprang you may have more than one who filled the role it s possible you found fatherly guidance when you were well past childhood your father may want to be part of your life but is blocked by circumstances or people beyond his control family can be a complex community it s a tough job fathering the part of fathering that doesn t involve your 23andme score that is it involves providing for needs big and small passing down family traditions and teaching skills such as carpentry baking bread changing a tire burping the alphabet proper fathering calls for the exercise of both wisdom and imagination and just plain exercise when surrounded by active kids and it s a lifetime commmitment having children only changes everything in your life for the rest of your life so fathers need to be ready for changing relationships with his children if he s doing the job properly they will someday reach a stage where they need explanations that go beyond because i said so tricky moments because kids are likely to remember the underlying reasons and rationale form their own conclusions have ideas of their own fathers approach childrearing in lots of different ways they have diverse skills and shortcomings and wildly varying levels of patience and understanding some are better listeners than others some are more willing to try new things give up old things or let bright shiny new things pass them by they may or may not have had a good father to help them along the way all of them make mistakes most of them are doing the best they can relationships with fathers can be challenging especially as we age and have ideas and lives of our own perhaps we become separated geographically and or ideologically but fathers who have put in the time spent that time listening and getting to know their kids can usually hold their own when it comes to changing times and situations especially when lots of love has always been part of the deal i ve always had mixed feelings about holidays that seem to have been invented by hallmark and florists but i admit i very much enjoy seeing the photos and memories folks share on social media for father s day maybe i m more sentimental about it now that like so many of my contemporaries my own father is not available for me to call today and it would have been today the day after the holiday i was always fairly notorious for being a bit late for such things maybe now that my own children are grown i better appreciate how much my husband invested himself in raising them loving them being there and i marvel at how dedicated he has always been to understanding admiring and championing our children when he had no fatherly grandfatherly encouragement to do so and i m sure it seems a more special day to me now that my son has a son and is on may 12 2023 by patti i avoided listening to podcasts for a long time seemed to me too much like talk radio people broadcasting at me about celebrities or sports or politics or self help tips the very thought of it set my teeth on edge not that i have anything against streaming information entertainment i am after all alive and well in the 21st century it s how we do things these days spotify fulfills what i longed for throughout my teenage years the ability to call up any songs by anyone from any year to mix in with other songs in any order magical and audio books as a lifelong book lover how could i resist the opportunity to continue reading as i m driving or walking or washing dishes i subscribed to audible as soon as i heard about it and never looked back along with books i also listen to the great courses lecture series from university professors where i can get all the benefits of a great class without the tests i listen to a lot of history courses and once audible began streaming recommendations for history podcasts in my direction it didn t take long for that form of media to stick its foot in my door i became a podcast listener these short trips through history give me a lot to think about as i consider those who ve walked before us wondering what it was like to be in their shoes and what do you know one episode of a favorite podcast was about just that the history of shoes smirk or roll your eyes if you must but it was quite interesting the podcast host began the discussion by noting that shoes occupy such a strange place in our consciousness because on one hand they re functional you wear them because your feet will hurt if you don t you have to wear the shoes but they re also this huge status symbol they can be be sexy they can be clunky they can be functional they can be sporty they can be all these different things and ultimately we put them on our feet and we drag them along the floor shoe historian and curator of toronto s bata shoe museum elizabeth semmelhack points out that the key word is functional noting that absolutely some of their functionality is keeping our feet safe but i would argue a greater purpose of the shoes is to be socially functional to identify who we are our status have historically been used to demarcate gender group identity i do think that shoes no matter what shape they are they are functional you just have to question what the function is she also notes that handling shoes that are historical artifacts can feel extremely personal and poignant unlike other pieces of clothing we literally make an impression on shoes they eventually become shaped to our feet they absorb sweat that is never washed out we leave a bit of ourselves behind in our shoes semmelhack adds that no matter how much someone might protest that they have no interest in shoes you absolutely care your lack of care often is used as a signal to fit some social idea about status and gender she elaborates commenting that a man who claims to care nothing about shoes might suddenly care very much if someone made him wear a pair of stilettos still when i first heard that statement i was a bit skeptical as to just how much it really applied to me do i really care that much about what kind of shoes i wear as long as they don t hurt my feet surely i m more concerned about comfort and that my shoes at least sort of match what i m wearing but then the host finished with a question for the expert which pairs of shoes in your life have been the most important immediately i had way more than a single pair of important shoes that came to mind and all of them are memorable precisely because of how they reflected my social attitudes and self identification at the time i wore them my very first shoes were bronzed after i was finished with them and placed at the base of a picture frame that displayed my smiling baby face i don t remember how i felt about those shoes as i toddled about but i include them in my list because clearly they were important to my parents a keepsake of my first wobbly steps and it was definitely the thing to do back then bronzed baby shoes seemed to be part of the decor in most of the homes i visited when i was a kid so those bronze shoes say something about my generational identity i m not quite sure what they say but there it is i found a few websites that claim bronzed baby shoes are still a great keepsake but i m pretty sure i ve never seen a pair belonging to anyone under the age of 50 as lasting keepsakes go my bronzed shoes didn t quite achieve vintage status i found them when we were cleaning out mom s house and the coating was cracked and broken with the none too sturdy white leather sticking out happily my vintage feet are still in good condition and worth keeping i think i remember this ad lots of good boinging sounds the first great shoes i actually remember red ball jets easy to remember really because it was important to call them by the full name they weren t just ordinary shoes we knew that when we wore them we would run faster jump higher stop on a dime all the ads said so and it was true we felt compelled to demonstrate our improved speed and bounciness as soon as we put on a new pair it was a great feeling even after the red ball inevitably came off the heel with only a little help from prying fingers while i was in elementary school none of my shoes fit me for long enough to be particularly memorable by the time i was in second grade i wore the same shoe size as my mother granted she had small feet but still i must have been moving up in size every few months what was more memorable than the shoes themselves was shopping for them an experience totally different from what we do now going to buy school shoes for four kids was an event we always went downtown to the same shoe store i don t remember the name of the store but i knew mr walker would be fitting our shoes and i only just now realize that he must have smiled through a lot of bad jokes as people matched up his name with his profession he always wore a suit and tie and greeted us with a big smile he was also the mayor of our small town and his daughter was in my class there was a touch of ceremony in the whole process a mini rite of passage at the beginning of each new school year where i would first stand on the metal sizer and mr walker would make sure my foot was placed just so then he would slide the measuring bits into place solemnly announce my new size and go to gather some boxes of shoes for me to try on as he straddled his odd little bench i would prop my foot on the front of it he carefully slipped my foot into the shoe tied it had me stand up so he could feel where my toes were and let me walk a bit so i could see how they felt and then he did the same for each of my siblings it always felt like an important day another step on the road to becoming grown up mom added a bit more to the tradition by sending us out to walk on the gravel driveway at home to roughen up the slick bottoms of our new shoes to make it slightly less likely that we would slip and fall during the inevitiable running around that we would be doing by the time i was in fifth grade my size was pretty stable and i was able to wear my shoes for long enough to really appreciate them and the first pair of shoes that i remember absolutely loving my black low top sneakers i wore them every day i wore them with everything pants dresses and always with white ankle socks my favorite pairing was when i wore my yellow easter dress to school with those grungy sneakers and droopy white socks it may have been my first deliberate fashion statement such as it was as they wore out and started to look really shabby i loved them even more they were beat up enough
