ertain basic facts his wife is dead buried in vermont and his daughter has been taken from his control which is why she is now living with her aunt marion and uncle lincoln in paris while he nowadays lives and works in prague putting these facts together with the hints about his drinking i think we can deduce that he spent years in paris on endless extravagant partying until some kind of crash the wall street crash itself october 1929 the death of his wife his daughter being legally removed from his care 2 he takes honoria for lunch and is impressed by her self possession on the way out of the restaurant they bump into two friends from the old days duncan schaeffer a friend from college and lorraine quarrles a lovely pale blonde of thirty these friends notice that he is sober and are mock scandalised an indication of his reputation for endless drunkenness they invite him over to their table then to dinner but he refuses both offers because as the narrator significantly puts it his own rhythm was different now in fact fitzgerald goes on to give a canny psychological explanation they liked him because he was functioning because he was serious they wanted to see him because he was stronger than they were now because they wanted to draw a certain sustenance from his strength p 119 this kind of thing suddenly appears in his stories of the 1930s i assume this derives from the extensive contacts fitzgerald had with the psychiatric specialists he took his mentally ill wife zelda to see for several years at this period i imagine extensive interviews and reading explain why 1 the stories seem to become this aware of himself his relations with others his and their needs from relationships and 2 provided him with the concepts and language to describe it father and daughter go on to the vaudeville where they meet duncan and lorraine again but he barely notices them he only has eyes for his little girl in the taxi back to lincoln s place he tells her not to forget her dead mother and when she suddenly says she wants to come and live with him his heart leaps up it is his dearest wish he drops her at her uncle s flat and leaves 3 at 9pm he returns for a formal meeting with lincoln and marion he wants his daughter to live with him he acknowledges he behaved badly three years ago only now is it clarified that his dead wife was called helen and marion is her sister he only began drinking when he sold his business in america and came to paris the period of heavy drinking only lasted a year and a half until he had to go to a sanatorium but this coincided with helen dying so he wasn t able to be with her it was as she was dying that helen entrusted honoria to marion apparently there was a climactic night when he locked helen out of their apartment and she showed up at marion s place in the rain soaked through this interview struck me as very well done indeed it demonstrates more of the psychological self awareness i mentioned in the portrait of charlie trying to manage his own emotions and submit to the inevitable criticism of his own appalling behaviour but also the insight into marion s position as her sister s legal executor for all this bad stuff happened at a time when she was herself suffering and so charlie offered the figure of the villain the bad guy she could pin everything on this is why it s so difficult for her to accept the idea that he s now got a good job and is sober so the decision rests on marion and suddenly she sees thing straight and throws in the sponge gives up says she feels unwell and leaves the room the husband lincoln is a good sort has been moderating the conversation now has to leave to see after his wife charlie leaves and walks the streets of paris trembling with nerves and remembers the incidents of the terrible evening which led to him locking her out on a snowy evening when she trudged the streets in just slippers and developed pneumonia before arriving in a mess at her sister s flat that was in 29 marion s hatred of him is entirely justified as he falls asleep he imagines helen on a swing talking to him tenderly 4 next day he awakes with hope in his heart and more psychology which sounds like it comes straight out of therapy the present was the thing work to do and someone to love but not to love too much for he knew the injury that a father can do to a daughter or a mother to a son by attaching them too closely afterward out in the world the child would seek in the marriage partner the same blind tenderness and failing probably to find it turn against love and life p 127 he meets lincoln for lunch who tells him marion will acquiesce in him taking honoria though it will oil the process if she retains legal guardianship he s a good guy lincoln and he repeats a point made earlier that marion also felt it was some kind of injustice that charlie and helen were able because of money invested on the stock market to spend so wildly and lavishly without even working while she and lincoln were scraping along on his salary that s another source of her resentment back at his hotel he gets a long telegram from lorraine who asks why he was so ff with her the other day and mentions some of their escapades from the crazy times like him stealing a butcher s tricycle and cycling her all over paris she ends by asking him to meet her at the ritz but he has no intention he is a different person now at five he turns up at lincoln and marion s apartment with gifts he deeply enjoys the atmosphere of calm and their obvious love for the children things appear to have been resolved and happy when disaster strikes that couple he met at the restaurant lorraine and duncan turn up heavily drunk lincoln has to let them in where their louche loudness scares the children and destroys the calm loving atmosphere they ve found the address somehow and tracked him down and want him to come out on the lash appalled charlie does what he can to get rid of them lorraine turning drunkenly bitter and angry with his rejection on the way out marion had long ago retreated and lincoln explains that she really is not well and can t cope with shocks like this charlie says goodbye to honoria but the fragile sense of trust has been shattered 5 charlie went directly to the ritz bar with the furious idea of finding lorraine and duncan but they were not there he talks to paul the bartender as he orders his one drink of the day he restricts himself to just the one and you and i might have expected him to fall off the wagon go on a howling drunk return to lincoln s apartment and blow everything forever in fact he doesn t when paul offers a refill charlie easily says no he phones lincoln who tells him marion is sick in bed and that this has set everything back by six months angry and frustrated but realistic charlie plans to send more presents to them then return to prague the last thought of the piece is he is sure helen would never have wanted him to feel this lonely babylon revisited online commentary andré le vot s biography of fitzgerald shows how he wrote this story at a low point in december 1930 after zelda s first breakdown and scott had spent his first real chunk of time with his daughter scottie it marks the end of an era of the almost divine privileges americans had enjoyed during the roaring twenties and before the depression and the end of his own youth i not only announced the birth of my young illusions in this side of paradise but pretty much the death of them in some of my last post stories like babylon revisited quote le vot page 256 9 financing finnegan 1938 1 the unnamed narrator is an author who shares an agent and a publisher with an elusive legendary author named finnegan this man can write anything and if he s never recaptured his first flush of success he is continually reinventing himself every few years he is the perennial man of promise in american letters p 146 it s obviously a fantasia on fitzgerald s own wrecked reputation he had burst onto the scene with this side of paradise in 1920 defining an entire era and nation to itself eighteen years and the long years of the great depression later he was very much a back number almost forgotten but he writes up the situation with nearly the same wild exaggeration we find in may day or diamond as big as the ritz at the meeting with his agent mr cannon he has to listen to the latter defending finnegan saying he s going to bounce back over lunch his publisher george jaggers repeats what a tremendous writer finnegan is it s only back in the publisher s office that he happens to see a telegram left lying around in which finnegan desperately begs for a 50 so that he can get his haircut initially he thinks it must be asking an advance of 50 000 so is shocked then the publisher confirms that no he just wants 50 is he really that broke one of the greatest writers of his generation christ when he overhears a phone conversation between agent and publisher it dawns on him that both men have loaned finnegan so much money that they are desperate for his stock to rise again which is why neither of them will hear a word against him can t bring themselves to admit the sad truth that they themselves parrot finnegan s claims that he s just about to make it big again the truth is finnegan s been in a slump he s had blow after blow in the past few years but now he s snapping out of it and i know we ll get back every cent we ve 2 briefly the harassed publisher tosses the narrator a manuscript of one of finnegan s stories and the narrator finds himself entranced utterly absorbed damn the man can write 3 it s a few months before the narrator returns to new york to see his agent and publisher once again conversation turns to the topic of finnegan ludicrously finnegan is now meant to be on some expedition to the north pole as usual the agent is hoping against hope that the expedition will deliver literary gold the last thing he said was characteristic of him whatever he writes is going to be pure white it s going to have a blinding glare about it p 151 the narrator learns that even more preposterously the publisher and agent banded together to pay for finnegan s trip north although he did make over his life insurance to them still they must be mad months pass and then the narrator reads in the papers that the expedition has suffered disaster and that finnegan and several others walked off into the snow to die he s shocked by the death of a fellow author but pleased that cannon and jaggers will at last have their debts cleared by the life insurance on his next trip to the agent s office the narrator encounters finnegan s son and guesses from him the father s charm i strongly suspect we re intended to read this as a self portrait of fitzgerald himself from him finnegan s son i could guess at finnegan s charm a shy frankness together with an impression of a very quiet brave battle going on inside of him that he couldn t quite bring himself to talk about but that showed as heat lightning in his work p 152 is this fitzgerald s view of himself or one view at least or a view he thinks will enhance his reputation in a short story the agent tells the narrator to read one of the poems the boy has left with him but when they both come to investigate the document it turns out to be another begging letter yes he certainly has his father s gift smiles the narrator the market picks up authors are making money again the narrator is fronted 1 000 to fly to hollywood and work on something he pays a last visit to cannon s office and finds it in complete disarray with several secretaries in his room and everyone on the phone the banks are closed and they re trying to cadge money because he s flush the narrator peels off a couple of hundreds as cannon hands him a telegram the narrator and the reader has a premonition am miraculously safe here but detained by authorities please wire passage money for four people and two hundred extra i am bringing back plenty greetings from the dead by now it is abundantly clear how fitzgerald has exaggerated his own plight for comic effect and it is very funny the payoff is that he never gets back the two hundred he loaned his agent subtly without quite realising it the narrator has joined the publisher and the agent in the long list of finnegan s creditors and people who are deluding themselves that one day the man will make it big again i imagine though that some day i will surely get it because some day finnegan will click again and i know that people will clamour to read what he writes and i have every reason to think that he will come through he d better comedy financing finnegan online 10 pat hobby himself 1940 in the last year or so of his life fitzgerald seventeen very short stories about a character he invented pat hobby a 49 year old has been hollywood hack writer they re intended to be funny though they also have a strong undercurrent of sadness i ve read all seventeen of them and summarised them in a different blog post none of them are as good as almost any of the short stories in the other volumes you emphatically should not start reading fitzgerald with them or you ll wonder what all the fuss is about the editors have included two of the 17 in this collection which is a shame they should have included a few more of the best short stories from earlier in his career a patriotic short december 1940 senior producer jack berners hires pat to smarten up an existing script for a short movie about the career of general fitzhugh lee who fought for the confederacy and later pardoned by the president fights for the usa against spain he answers to ben brown head of the shorts department the word president jogs pat s memory his spasmodic work on the script adding clichéd bits of dialogue or direction is interspersed with memories of the time a real live us president came and visited the studio hosted by pat s neighbour mr maranda pat was invited to lunch and exchanged a few banalities with the great man later he snuck out of his house round the hedge to maranda s his neighbour s place and came face to face with the president again and was reintroduced my god those were the days by contrast back in the present pat goes to the water cooler to get a cup of water just as some big cheeses jack berners ben brown and several other executives come walking down the hall in a mob around a gorgeous young woman who is the girl of the moment the it girl the oomph girl the glamour girl the girl for whose services every studio was in violent competition but instead of breaking up to pass pat the mob continues straight towards him and he has to press himself flat against the wall so as not to be run over berners has the decency to throw a scanty hi pat over his shoulders but the others don t even bother quivering with rage and humiliation pat goes back to his desk where he adds a new bit of dialogue to the script which he knows will be cut but which expresses his feelings lee mr president you can take your...
