psychological dwindling is symbolised by the shrinking size of the communities he lives in until it shrinks so small that it vanishes and the long gruelling narrative is over characters these are snapshots and key quotations relating to the characters as we meet them skewed towards their first appearances in book 1 dick diver wanting above all to be brave and kind he had wanted even more than that to be loved 3 10 on the riviera chief of his little society of partygoers they reached the hotel and rosemary walked a little behind him to admire him to adore him his step was alert as if he had just come from some great doings and was hurrying on toward others organizer of private gaiety curator of a richly incrusted happiness 1 17 dick has a kind strong mouth wherever he goes he inspired parties by making everyone feel safe and relaxed a father figure sports a gold headed cane and a pince nez save among a few of the tough minded and perennially suspicious he had the power of arousing of his one room house carrying a telescope and looked east toward cannes in a moment nicole swam into his field of vision whereupon he disappeared into his house and came out with a megaphone he had many light mechanical devices 1 6 the divers made her want to stay near them forever 1 6 dick is in rosemary s view tall and strong obvious wish fulfilment by fitzgerald who was neither i ve read plenty of blurbs and comments pointing out that dick bears many of fitzgerald s qualities is a projection of his ideal self well yes and no what struck me more was that dick is a man trapped in an immature conception of love and romance a part of dick s mind was made up of the tawdry souvenirs of his boyhood the same thing keeps happening to him over and over the phrases he uses to describe nicole s young freshness in 1917 are applied just as sincerely 8 years later to rosemary on the riviera on this reading it s dick who is ill victim of an overwhelming desire to help or to be admired trapped in a compulsion to act out the same romantic tropes with a succession of women refusing to grow up he was in love with every pretty woman he saw now their forms at a distance their shadows on a wall 2 18 after book 2 has given us the flashback to 1917 and dick and nicole falling in love and we return to the present i was struck how the descriptions of nicole and rosemary young fresh innocent etc are interchangeable they are both daddy s girls his characteristics are he is irresistible to women he sometimes kisses women he shouldn t like a client but he is hopelessly compromised by one simple central fact he married his patient he fell in love with and married one of his psychiatric patients surely that breaks every rule in the book was it perfectly permissible in fitzgerald s day would it be allowed now surely it is a plain case of the abuse of power and responsibility it leads to the dualism in his views of her that of the husband that of the psychiatrist a doubled conflicted identity nicole is well aware of this when they have fights it isn t a husband and wife arguing or rather it s more than that it can always end up being a physician correcting his patient as nicole cries out it s always a delusion when i see what you don t want me to see 2 15 as if all this weren t bad enough there s another revelation which knocked me right off my perch when he s still a partner in the clinic nicole receives a letter from the mother of a fifteen year old girl it was the mother who was ill and in the clinic while the daughter stayed to be near her and upon a single occasion he had let the girl a flirtatious little brunette ride into zurich with him upon her request and in the evening had brought her back to the clinic in an idle almost indulgent way he kissed her later she tried to carry the affair further but he was not interested and subsequently probably consequently the girl had come to dislike him and taken her mother away fifteen he kissed 15 year old daughter of a mental patient not just as an adult man but as the physician to the mentally ill mother surely this man should have been arrested locked up and struck off any kind of register all the summaries i ve read of the novel completely fail to take these issue into account that he acted profoundly unprofessionally and immorally in ever letting nicole fall in love with him let along marrying him and that he then carried on flirting with patients or their relatives in a scandalous unprofessional and illegal way isn t this the real issue rather than the sad decline of a charismatic hero which the novel is painted as nicole diver née warren you know you re a little complicated after all oh no she assured him hastily no i m not really i m just a i m just a whole lot of different simple people 3 8 nicole is 24 when the novel commences in 1925 the granddaughter of a self made american capitalist and the granddaughter of a count of the house of lippe weissenfeld they have two children lanier and topsy she was the most attractive woman rosemary had ever met in book 2 we travel back eight years from 1925 to 1917 to find nicole barely 18 in the mental clinic at zurich but falling helplessly in love with young dr diver as rosemary was to do 8 years later in dick s eyes she smiled a moving childish smile that was like all the lost youth in the world 2 5 she was the first morning in may she was a carnival to watch nothing had ever felt so young as her lips nicole finding their table and glowing away white and fresh and new in the september afternoon 2 10 but also as things become more complicated she led a lonely life owning dick who did not want to be owned 2 13 the central issue of the entire novel for me is the fact that she was sexually abused by her father that rings out like an air raid siren to me every time i remembered it it eclipsed everything else in the story surely this is the over riding point once i learned this one seminal fact i found it hard to forget or put to one side nicole s madness a schizophrêne is well named as a split personality nicole was alternately a person to whom nothing need be explained and one to whom nothing could be explained it was necessary to treat her with active and affirmative insistence keeping the road to reality always open making the road to escape harder going but the brilliance the versatility of madness is akin to the resourcefulness of water seeping through over and around a dike it requires the united front of many people to work against it he felt it necessary that this time nicole cure herself he wanted to wait until she remembered the other times and revolted from them in a tired way he planned that they would again resume the régime relaxed a year before 2 15 when rosemary discovers nicole having an attack in her hotel bathroom dick is standing over her telling her to pull herself together control yourself control yourself nicole control yourself get up 1 25 was this recommended psychiatric treatment for someone having a hysterical attack in 1934 how pitifully inadequate the point of the scene is to shockingly reveal to innocent young rosemary the secret at the heart of the divers marriage but the effect on the reader is to reveal the pitiful state of psychiatric care ninety years ago is this how virginia woolf was treated i know she was handed over to nurses to manage because i ve read references to her attacking and kicking the nurses it makes you realise the horror of trying to manage such a person in such a state without the aid of any modern medicines whatsoever rosemary hoyt daughter of mrs elsie speers like so many fitzgerald heroines rosemary is very young she is almost 18 yet already she has starred in a hit hollywood movie daddy s girl still young enough for her mother to be her best friend and confidante i don t love anybody but you mother darling like most women she liked to be told how she should feel and she liked dick s telling her which things were ludicrous and which things were sad in this innocent phase she begs him to take her and he wisely refuses then her second appearance five years later when she does finally sleep with dick and they both regret it humans and their sex lives pathetic mrs elsie speers rosemary s mother only appears in book 2 in 1925 though referred to in rosemary s second appearance in 1928 mrs elsie speers was not recompensing herself for a defeat of her own she had no personal bitterness or resentments about life twice satisfactorily married and twice widowed twice widowed and ambitious for her only child rosemary her best friend and confidante 1 3 earl brady hollywood film director who s relocated to the riviera rosemary goes to visit him on set in book 1 and can see that he s a focused pushy director yet at the same time clicks with him he comes to a dinner at the divers place diver s riviera gang mrs abrams mrs mckisco mr mckisco mr dumphry abe north a musician who after a brilliant and precocious start had composed nothing for seven years he s becoming an alcoholic hopelessly in love with nicole who knows it but is bored by him in paris gets drunkenly involved in a fracas with a group of black men and a lot later on dick learns that he was beaten to death in a speakeasy in new york mary north long suffering wife of abe continually nagging him to stop drinking after his death she extravagantly marries an indian man hosain with a courtesy title and thus becoming contessa di minghetti argument over the dirty bathwater cuts dick dead at a beachside bar but later needs him to get her spring from gaol and momentarily could have had a fling with him right at the end of the narrative luis campion gay emotional sports a monocle the name campion is a play on the notion of camp or camping in the sense of being showily homosexual tommy barban mercenary has fought in 8 wars barban is also a sort of pun invoking the notion of barbarian fights a farcical duel with mckisco in the novel s closing passages nicole gives way to his prolonged passion for her lets him sleep with her and ends up marrying him albert mckisco author socialist sympathiser with the soviet union fights the absurd duel with tommy barban years later is revealed as having become a successful novelist mrs violet vi mckisco saw dick managing nicole in the bathroom at the villa and wouldn t stop talking about it in the car on the way back and so triggered the duel royal dumphry minor character guest at the great dinner at the villa diana a tall singularly swaying male i couldn t make out if he s meant to be gay or not beth baby warren nicole s older sister she emerges in book 2 as a distinctive figure in her own right fitzgerald caricatures her as a twitchy nervy spinsterish 30 year old who has a thing for englishmen a tall fine looking woman deeply engaged in being almost thirty baby had certain spinsters characteristics she was alien from touch she started if she was touched suddenly and such lingering touches as kisses and embraces slipped directly through the flesh into the forefront of her consciousness she made few gestures with her trunk her body proper instead she stamped her foot and tossed her head in almost an old fashioned way she relished the foretaste of death prefigured by the catastrophes of friends persistently she clung to the idea of nicole s tragic destiny 2 13 she was engaged to an englishman but he died in the war back in 1917 as dick and nicole s affair becomes serious she reveals that she s been living on tenterhooks since nicole s illness never knowing whether nicole slipping off somewhere is innocent or might be fatal she reveals that the family have thought about buying a doctor to look after nicole full time she ll be glad to hand that responsibility over to dick who realises he is in some sense being bought by this wealthy family she mildly disapproves of dick finding him too intellectual and not tony enough for a family as rich as theirs but he seems to be curing nicole so he ll do for the time being she pops up at various moments throughout the narrative not least pulling a lot of strings to get dick released from a police cell after he stupidly and drunkenly punched a detective in rome at the end it s highly symbolic when baby and nicole sit together at a bar overlooking the beach and literally see dick off as he disappears off to the train station and obscurity big money wins the diver children not that you hear about them much in the novel in one sense they are the missing characters a son and a daughter lanier born august 1920 and topsy born june 1922 long sentences the great gatsby is brief clipped to the point in its structure its descriptions and its prose style tender by contrast feels much more leisurely unbelted off the leash discursive and digressive you ll have gathered from my summary how many powerful scenes there are which don t directly contribute to the narrative some of them so tangential as to be inexplicable part of that extensiveness is reflected in tender s noticeably longer sentences and these are generally not an improvement all three were personable in different ways all were of a special gentleness that she felt was part of their lives past and future not circumstanced by events not at all like the company manners of actors and she detected also a far reaching delicacy that was different from the rough and ready good fellowship of directors who represented the intellectuals in her life long loping sentences that often feel lax and or clunky the most unhappy aspect of their relations was dick s growing indifference at present personified by too much drink nicole did not know whether she was to be crushed or spared dick s voice throbbing with insincerity confused the issue she couldn t guess how he was going to behave next upon the tortuously slow unrolling of the carpet nor what would happen at the end at the moment of the leap 3 7 the precautions were needless for the situation of the parties outside the door was so harassed as to preclude any but the most fleeting judgments on matters not pertinent to themselves 1 24 sometimes these dangly sentences are hard to read or parse not taken in isolation like here but in the flow of paragraphs and pages you come across dangling long sentences
