your views on up front reference letters for faculty positions i e reference letters that must be supplied by the application deadline before the applicants have been evaluated or filtered in any way i have no idea how common it is to request letters up front but it does happen and so i was curious how others felt about it here are the results tl dr almost everybody dislikes the practice of while back linked to a dan davies piece on the politics of unrealistic numbers davies piece critiques the british government s claim that a few tweaks to bank regulations could prompt up to 80 billion pounds of additional business lending that s a unrealistically huge number for reasons davies discusses so the phrase up to ends up doing a lot of rhetorical work using the phrase up to allows you to write down an unrealistically huge number thereby grabbing the reader s attention and in this case hopefully approval but without saying anything false the phrase up to merely specifies the upper end of a range while leaving the lower end unspecified and without specifying anything about the probabilities of different outcomes within the range of potential outcomes a change in bank regulations that might lead to up to 80 billion pounds worth of additional business lending could actually reduce business lending without the up to claim being false what does this have to do with ecology well this sort of up to claim crops up all the time in ecology it s a common rhetorical device in ecology papers talks and popular science articles about ecology but it often crops up implicitly rather complaints about faculty jobs that require reference letters up front i e require reference letters for all applicants by the application deadline however it s often unclear if these complaints are coming from letter writers themselves or from job seekers who are complaining on behalf of imagined letter writers as i noted in an old post in a different context some profs are happy to write as many reference letters as they re asked for at least so long as they have sufficient advance notice but of course comments on ecoevojobs net and on that old post of mine are anecdotes they might not
