tad insensitive juxtaposition of stories it seems to me the world news is rounded out with news of a polish tennis player giving himself up to us immigration officials asking for asylum the naming of the new archbishop of chicago and the appointment of the new assistant to president eisenhower note the 48 stars on the flag in 1958 alaska and hawaii become states in 59 and of course you can hardly miss the huge tiger skin decorating the wall of this avid fisherman and hunter yikes this issue also included short articles on elvis enlisting in the army with screaming fans bidding him farewell the new two point conversion option in college football settlement of a united auto workers strike the 26th cotton ball a big social occasion for young southern society complete with luncheons teas and dinner dances with big skirted dresses as well as an honor guard called the tiny rebs young boys in confederate uniforms who stood guard while the southern belles and their escorts came down the stairs a russian immigrant teacher adding russian language lessons to an elementary school curriculum in salt lake city just four years after the mccarthy hearings are you now or have you ever been a member of the communist party in the united states parents were evidently thrilled to have their young children learn russian a disconcertingly brief two whole paragraphs piece on southern schools closing rather than follow new integration laws looks like life magazine felt like they needed to mention this but didn t really want to talk about it much and of course as with any magazine we have the advertisements far and away the most advertised product is the automobile and the things needed to keep it running oil batteries spark plugs tires this makes total sense considering that at the beginning of the 50s there were 25 million registered automobiles in the us and by 1958 there were 67 million and one in six us workers were employed directly or indirectly in the automobile industry cars were well on their way to becoming a symbol of american culture and prosperity i think they needed two pages for these ads because the cars were so long next most advertised thing convenience foods with the spread of supermarkets around the country canned and boxed foods came into their own making dinner preparations easier for 50s moms my own mom was pretty creative with prepared foods and i grew up happily eating them i didn t even realize that cakes or pancakes could be made without a boxed mix till i was nearly an adult for me the worst part of these food ads are how completely unappetizing they look still they must have been effective that spaghetti sauce looks completely devoid of any seasonings but what do i know i used to love canned spaghetti and is it my imagination or do those 3 great soups look pretty much the same i m sure i ate all of them at some time or other mmm mmm good ads for clothing and shoes come next with a focus on men s business suits nearly all men in the ads are dressed in mad men style even if they re just smoking a cigarette or having a drink except for baseball players one sporting men of action underwear and mickey mantle using power tools while wearing a baseball cap and it s just an impression based on other ads but i feel like the assumption is that women are making the decisions on what their husbands wear to work and what mattress they sleep on and what they eat the men seem free to choose their own booze and ciggies though equal ad space is given to each of the following booze cigarettes and insurance all three combined take up only slightly more space than car related ads i can t decide whether this looks like a fun party or an interaction between cartoon villains soft drinks got only half as many ads as booze but all three got full pages all of them pepsi 7 up and coke were touted as light drinks though since they were definitely not sugar free i think they were considered light in comparison to bourbon and vodka the only other beverages mentioned in the magazine one two page spread was set up like it was an article showing three trim ladies who tell a tale of struggles with weight loss and they were excited to share their successes with the stauffer home reducing plan and really why shouldn t a vibrating couch and chair help you lose weight but alas the federal trade commission came after them a few years later with a cease and desist order go figure since i was a newborn at the time my memories of how the adults around me dressed are a bit fuzzy but these ads seem to depict a pretty strict dress code for everyday activities a few more ads stand out just because nice to show how easily the baby can get his head through the bars nothing more wholesome than seeing your kids make good use of those cigar boxes i admit it s a cute picture just not one i think we d see these days words fail me so there it is the life and times i was born into looks like there may be some struggles ahead but there are also good things going on with lots of stuff to buy and to eat can t wait to see what the next sixty or so years bring posted in uncategorized 3 comments a place in history posted on january 3 2023 by patti the older i get the more interested i am in studying history this makes perfect sense since with each year more and more of my life is history and it becomes more and more natural to think in terms of how things were different back in the day i m not saying things were better when i was younger it s just interesting to look at how much has changed during this blip on the screen of world history that is my lifespan so i like learning about the blips that came before mine seeing how they were connected or changed by innovations disasters and everyday events what people believed was wonderful or terrible or imporant about what was happening around them and finding out why i should care about it how it is relevant during this current blip of time because it is relevant whatever it is whenever it happened it influenced somebody somewhere questions were raised problems arose pride was injured tempers flared curiosity was piqued fancies were tickled accidents happened power shifted someone was in the right place at the right time stuff happened and the world changed but the people who all the historical stuff happened to the people who set historic changes in motion while they may have known different facts than we do may have had a different range of experiences their physical needs emotions intelligence motivations complaints hopes dreams disappointments imagination and relationships were much like our own so we can learn from them as we assess the shape of things and think about changes these reflections have been shaped by listening to great courses lectures by professor dorsey armstrong and professor patrick allitt in her courses on the middle ages dr armstrong often points out that people in the middle ages didn t think of themselves as living in the middle of anything and that regardless of how different their lives might seem from our own people then were more like us than different from us and after listening to many of dr allitt s courses on british and us history and happily contemplating long ago events that shaped the lives of my ancestors on both sides of the atlantic i came to his lectures on america after the cold war the first 30 years and it changed my perception of my personal space time continuum a history course about events that all happened in my adult lifetime i was a bit stunned to think about myself as a person living within a historical context and yes of course i realized that history is the study of past events and things that happened this morning or yesterday or last week are all technically past events so i m a part of recent history got it but when i was growing up during the cold war did i think of it as a historical era it was just the way the world was a scary fact of life that i had no control over and as an adult 30 years later i ve barely processed how soviet communism seemed one day to simply close up shop let alone understand the long term implications of what has happened in us politics over the past decades when i ve been a voting citizen mostly i go about my business do the best i can for my family and friends and hope for good things like people do and always have anyway i realized that in the future we re all going to be part of history and that sounds kind of like time travel which appeals to me so that s what i plan to do travel back through my own time and look at it in a couple of ways starting in 1958 i plan to look at world events technological innovations societal trends and or upheavals for each year and do my best to reflect on what was happening in my life at the time i also plan to read whatever was on the new york times fiction best seller list for the week of my birthday each year and try to figure out what made each book so interesting at the time when i looked at the list of books i need to read for this project it made me wish i d had this bright idea about 20 years sooner this is going to take some time i m not quite sure how i m going to sort all of this out considering it took me all afternoon to write this post but i have finished reading the first best seller first week of october 1958 lolita what a way to start posted in aging history life perspective 4 comments senior reflections posted on august 29 2022 by patti to the class of 1977 so here we are 45 years after graduation wow just wow i m trying to remember back to graduation day if i had any thoughts about a day like today more than four decades down the road imagining what i might be doing where i might be probably not i m pretty sure my head was too full of immediate dreams plans expectations and fears excitement and uncertainty about going someplace new living among new people simply reveling in what a great thing it was to be finished with high school while i don t remember exactly what i was thinking about at the time i know for sure that i was not thinking about how differently my life might turn out from what i imagined and still be quite nice that there would ever come a day when i would actually enjoy hearing bohemian rhapsody again granted it did take about 20 years my lack of understanding of so many things on so many levels what kind of grandmother i would be that in my 60s i might still be deciding what i wanted to do when i grow up and realizing that did not mean that i had somehow lost my way or failed just that i still had things to do skills to develop discoveries to make that i would ever look at someone in their 40s and think of them as young that i would ever look at someone in their 70s and wonder what interesting plans they might have for the future how much a part of me these classmates would seem later in life even those i didn t know even if i never saw them again i love that our class has settled into getting together for class reunions at a pizza place rather than anything formal and i really really wish i could be there this year before i moved 2 000 miles away from the old home town i made it to the 15th and 20th reunions and found that in addition to touching base with old friends i enjoyed talking with classmates that i really hadn t known or talked to much in school people who moved with different crowds took different classes were involved in different activities those discussions showed me that time and life experiences had ironed out maybe erased a lot of the real or imagined differences that had separated us or at least limited our interactions in high school after 20 years we d all had jobs most had been married a lot of us were parents we d all had opportunities to realize that we didn t know as much as we thought we did when we were younger and that we were capable of more than we thought good and bad that life could be disappointing and wonderful usually both possibly at the same time i ve been realizing recently that much of our preparation for dealing with what adult life had in store for us happened in our own little classroom community especially considering those we were with since elementary school and junior high for better or worse we learned from each other how to function in society together we learned how to seek out and be friends we found out it s hard to be friends with everybody we taught each other new stuff we shared secrets we discovered we all had different things we were good at we learned that not all families were like our own we laughed with and at each other we pushed each other down and helped each other back up again we celebrated together and complained together we made each other cry we fell in love and we broke hearts we were glad to have our teachers help and we resented their authority we congratulated friends on their successes even if we were a bit jealous of them we got our feelings hurt we hurt others sometimes by accident but not always we discovered people were nicer or meaner than we had expected them to be we experienced a specific time in history together and share memories of the world that are unique to our generation for all of that i m thankful for the time spent in the company of the ccjhs class of 1977 if i didn t know you personally i m sure one of my friends did so we re connected which is why i feel a pang of grief each time we receive news of classmates we have lost even if i never really knew them or hadn t spoken to them since second grade i m beginning to understand that each loss is chipping away at my own youth my own experiences my own past it s making more and more sense to me why older folks speak so frequently about loved ones who have been gone for decades they re holding on to their own lives even if we ve heard their stories before we should listen help them hold on and i m happy to hang out and hold on with you all on facebook or wherever else we can manage it i love seeing pictures of your gardens your home repairs your anniversaries your grandkids even your hip and knee surgeries and i hope to make it to another reunion one day to
