tossed to the wolves to brady and marcus and the rest to get his way on something else he rescued it for the negro man and stahr is examined by his physician dr baer who confirms his serious heart condition and tells stahr that he may have less than six months to live unless he drastically reduces his work rate a medical intervention which harks back to the psychiatric scenes in tender is the night but with the intention of further defining stahr s character it would almost surely be useless he was due to die very soon now within six months one could say definitely what was the use of developing the cardiograms you couldn t persuade a man like stahr to stop and lie down and look at the sky for six months he would much rather die he said differently but what it added up to was the definite urge toward total exhaustion that he had run into before fatigue was a drug as well as a poison and stahr apparently derived some rare almost physical pleasure from working lightheaded with weariness it was a perversion of the life force he had seen before but he had almost stopped trying to interfere with it he had cured a man or so a hollow triumph of killing and preserving the shell so there s more plot and themes a plenty but nothing competes with the luminous quality of the long evening he just spent with kathleen you know the transcendent quality some scenes in gatsby have the sense that you have walked into a magical realm same here they sat on high stools and had tomato broth and hot sandwiches it was more intimate than anything they had done and they both felt a dangerous sort of loneliness and felt it in each other they shared in varied scents of the drug store bitter and sweet and sour and the mystery of the waitress with only the outer part of her hair dyed and black beneath and when it was over the still life of their empty plates a sliver of potato a sliced pickle and an olive stone that mood of hallucinatory closeness with someone of the opposite sex the dazedness of falling deeply deeply in love i have experienced it numerous times and i don t think anything i ve ever read comes as close to describing it as these passages in the last tycoon they ve stayed with me since i read it 40 years ago kathleen calls him interrupting his session with dr baer and he invites her to a screening he s attending this evening she says no and so he arranges to pick her up afterwards around 11 this time in his chauffeur driven car so they can sit snugly in the back and he can get to the bottom of her letter and her references to another man so that evening in the back of his limo kathleen tells him her long backstory falling in love with the man although they hold hands then she snuggles into his arms she keeps going on about the man she loves who is in fact another american he misses her but she demurs and i could feel the stab to my heart i experienced when the woman i was desperately madly in love with began to ease away say no stop taking part in the dream destroying the dream reverting to the dusty empty real world eventually they arrive back at her place and she gets out and stahr feels his heart exploding kathleen herself hesitates obviously torn between the long standing engagement she has with the man and this new magical thing she s discovered with stahr but she goes into her place and stahr s chauffeur drives him off next morning saturday he has lots of business to attend to after lunch he turns to the pile of telegrams and the last of them reads i was married at noon today goodbye and on a sticker attached send your answer by western union telegram and the narrator doesn t have to tell us how stahr must feel the long magical heart breaking chapter 5 ends there and so will i fitzgerald s strange unstable but movingly romantic prose style fitzgerald s early style was a wonderfully starry eyed youthful romanticism the first two novels tell the story of very young men and women falling in love in the snowy mid west or the privileged world of east coast ivy league universities but it was always an uneven style with the odd use of words and bumpinesses of phrasing nowhere near as simplified and mannered as hemingway nor as curt and crisp as chandler s pulp style in this his final text fitzgerald alternates one voice of practical a to b prose with another lit by romantic phraseology and a stream of wonderfully expressed psychological insights especially about love he is old fashioned he uses whom a lot twisting sentences round to fit it various things are brought forth chandler would puke from where he stood and though he was not a tall man it always seemed high up he watched the multitudinous practicalities of his world like a proud young shepherd to whom night and day had never mattered ch 1 fitzgerald persistently uses words oddly almost as malapropisms multitudinous not wrong just unexpected he has a strangely angled vision of the english language and i can see why he might have struggled to produce the straight shooting dialogue which the movies required and chandler covers whole pages with in the stahr had flown quote above the use of tenaciously and frantically are not quite right and yet the force of the image overcomes the slight hesitancy of its expression that sense of something not quite expressed correctly occurs on every page but at the same time these slight unexpectednesses the possible malapropisms work to create odd insights mr stahr s projection room was a miniature picture theatre with four rows of overstuffed chairs here stahr sats at two thirty and again at six thirty watching the lengths of film taken during the day there was often a savage tensity about the occasion he was dealing with faits accomplis the net results of months of buying planning writing and rewriting casting constructing lighting rehearsing and shooting the fruit of brilliant hunches or of counsels of despair of lethargy conspiracy and sweat ch 4 tensity something else again happens in the central sections of the text the marvellous scenes where stahr drives kathleen the image of his dead wife up to his half built millionaire house near the sea and there in the half built house their souls meet and mingle and then they go down to the shore to watch a local phenomenon the night time inrush of silver fish and have a strange midnight encounter with a black man who is capturing the fish that the star crossed lovers might find themselves on a romantic outcrop over the sea is very hollywood i e expected but the strangeness of the mood and the very strange but intensely memorable scene with the black fisherman on the beach has all the weirdness of real life and a pregnancy of meaning which makes it literature the next day stahr wonders if it even happened was it a trick as the whole vision of the last night came back to him the very skin with that peculiar radiance as if phosphorus had touched it he thought whether it might not be a trick to reach him from somewhere not minna and yet minna the curtains blew suddenly into the room the papers whispered on his desk and his heart cringed faintly at the intense reality of the day outside his window if he could go out now this way what would happen if he saw her again the starry veiled expression the mouth strongly formed for poor brave human laughter ch 4 the papers whispering his heart cringing these phrases are slightly hackneyed but they come from a more innocent time a less knowing time a more forgiving time right to the end fitzgerald wasn t afraid to be starry eyed romantic with a leap his heart went out of him as it had the night before only this time it stayed out there with a vast beneficence probably because i ve been reading him recently the love scenes remind me of d h lawrence specifically the way the thing that passes between stahr and kathleen is seen as a force bigger than them and is identified with life lawrence died in 1930 but his influence was immense among intellectuals looking for a purer life of feeling and freedom this is from the scene where stahr tracks down and meets the woman who he had glimpsed the day before and whose likeness to his dead wife haunts him there she was face and form and smile against the light from inside it was minna s face the skin with its peculiar radiance as if phosphorus had touched it the mouth with its warm line that never counted costs and over all the haunting jollity that had fascinated a generation with a leap his heart went out of him as it had the night before only this time it stayed out with a vast beneficence stahr s eyes and kathleen s met and tangled for an instant they made love as no one ever dares to do after their glance was slower than an embrace more urgent than a call stahr you can hear his friend hemingway chortling at the pretentious phrasing his rival hollywood hack chandler sneering at fitzgerald s naive romanticism but i think it s wonderful we ll never know whether the finished novel would have hung together and in his surviving outline the latter part of the plot becomes surprisingly convoluted and unattractive but this unfinished text contains numerous powerfully written scenes which shine with fitzgerald s undying sense of awe and wonder there is never a time when a studio is absolutely quiet there is always a night shift of technicians in the laboratory and dubbing rooms and people on the maintenance staff dropping in at the commissary but the sounds are all different the padded hush of tyres the quiet tick of a motor running idle the naked cry of a soprano singing into a night bound microphone around a corner i came upon a man in rubber boots washing down a car in a wonderful white light a fountain among the dead industrial rosemary schmiel wylie white an intellectual of the second order a cynical alcoholic hollywood screenwriter down on his luck he flirts with cecilia about marriage partly hoping she ll put in a good word for him with her dad minor mr marcus a wealthy powerful film producer and high ranking executive he represents the old guard and business minded side of the movie industry in contrast to stahr s creative and hands on genius manny schwartz a once influential hollywood producer whose career and spirit have collapsed he represents the fragile unforgiving nature of the studio system where figures can easily transition from powerful bosses to forgotten has beens george boxley british novelist who wonders what he s doing in hollywood thinking the movies are beneath him some commentators think he was based on aldous huxley mr mike van dyke a dark saucer eyed man rodriguez anxious lead actor who thinks he s finished pete zavras top cameraman who tries to kill himself because he thinks he s going blind jane meloney successful self made 50 year old screenwriter a dried up little blonde of fifty reinmund the supervisor a handsome young opportunist john broaca the director an ignoramus red ridingwood experienced director who stahr pulls off a job for kowtowing to a famous actress and so getting a lacklustre performance lee kapper the studio s art director danish prince agge an early fascist given a tour of sets by stahr mort fleishacker the ambitious company lawyer joe popolos the theatre owner the tarletons husband and wife writing team mr drummon mr kirstoff and mrs cornhill all working on the russian picture martha dodds unemployed struggling actress who once experienced wealth and glamour in hollywood an example of the harsh unforgiving nature of the entertainment industry ned sollinger stahr s office boy and martha s nephew la borwitz assistant producer doctor baer stahr s heart consultant for the past three years predicts he ll be dead in six months brimmer communist party member stahr has cecily arrange for him to meet bernie the celebrity photographer credit the last tycoon by f scott fitzgerald was published in november 1941 by charles scribner s sons
