and 13th centuries the concept of the gentleman amateur painter had little resonance in feudal japan where artists were generally professionals with a strong bond to their master and his school rather than the classic artists from the distant past from which chinese painters tended to draw their inspiration 56 painting was initially fully coloured often brightly so and the landscape never
