people march 27 2009 8 39 pm guitar obsessions it s a sickness in my soul a few weeks ago i bought a 91 hamer xt californian import for 100 shipping included and practice amp included i figure sell the amp for 30 take better pictures of the guitar and sell it for 120 or so and i make a 50 profit i cannot go wrong except that i really like the guitar yeah it s got a huge chip gouge out of the wood just below the volume knob well so what 1 it doesn t affect the sound 2 it means i don t really need to be worried about any other minor dings the guitar is really dirty i haven t loosened the strings to clean the fretboard yet but i will the fretboard is filthy but except for the gouge the paint job is really nice a good polish could make it shine nicely and it might not be impossible to fill the gouge and paint over it for a 90 color albedo match but man the guitar rocks it s really loud and sweet sounding unplugged i haven t plugged it in yet to tell the truth no time busy and the neck action is really fast and smooth too i don t want to sell it anymore china is getting really good at making good quality guitars both my chinese factory made xts are better than any but the very best korean made guitars i d bet this is better quality than even a mexican strat generally considered to be below usa strat quality but better than any other nation s import it is just plain a damn good guitar with the usa diablo on the way and with how much i like this guitar there s a very good chance that the slammer by hamer centaura will be sold it is in great condition and the trem works perfectly but the sound is sub par no reason to hold on to it that i can tell i guess i m going to end up with a bunch of awesome shredders without any ability to take advantage of it that s just the something about guitars every day honestly i ve been so busy with my masters degree study i haven t had time to pick up a guitar at all that s going to be one of the good points about my upcoming more money he then used the new money to pay off the original people making it look like he had earned money for them so that more people would see it and have confidence in him and continue to invest money continue to be pay inners that s a classic ponzi scheme pay inners is too awkward let s use another term say taxpayers because honestly i don t see the difference between a ponzi scheme and government stimulus right down to the stated intent being to maintain restore confidence in the system the biggest problem is the investor is you and president obama senate majority leader reid and ve played on my ministar rokstar a little one of the reasons i purchased it was a cheap easy way to test out a p 90 sound it wasn t like angels singing or anything in fact the p 90 really just sounds like a humbucker with the tone turned way down to me it s not a sound that i like really much and when i ve asked for other guitarists who use p 90s in order to picture in my mind a characteristic p 90 sound i get told pete townshend who i don t listen to the guitarist from green day who uses enough distortion to render the difference between p 90 and humbucker mostly moot and lesle west of mountain who plays only one song i know mississippi queen which sounds mostly like a rather saturated humbucker in the neck position well after thinking about a thick single coil sound with greater saturation and a very non trebly sound overall i finally thought of someone whose tone i can imagine hear that might play a p 90 john fogarty in his credence clearwater revival days so i looked on wikipedia and sure enough john fogarty is listed first as artists famous for using a p 90 pickup sound i like his tone fine but it wasn t one i would spend much time pursuing i m glad there are people who like p 90 pickup sounds but i m also glad i didn t spend 300 to find out it wasn t really what i wanted heck i very nearly purchased a hamer usa special with p 90s for 550 that could have been an for loving my hamer xt satf and import calis but i recognize that even though the hamer usas are far more expensive than the import hamers they are still extremely great values delivering vintage sound and feel for far less or delivering boutique sound and feel for far less i love the hamer sound and feel and yet hamer hasn t completely eclipsed my love for carvins i have a carvin bolt that someone assembled from a kit under the observation help of a carvin tech it even has a special sticker and the guitar rocks low action beautiful tone i had another carvin bolt but sold it due to not needing two bolts i ve lusted after carvins ever since seeing them in advertisements in the 80s much the same way many of you lusted after hamers to tell the truth hamers barely impacted on my consciousness back then carvin was my boutique guitar of choice and i love how you can have them build almost anything you want a truly amazingly wide choice of styles colors options and configurations and you can end up with a quality usa made shredder rocker or jazzer for just a little over 1k if you don t load up too much on the bling you can get one for 800 or less if you strip it back to the basics and still have some beatiful wood grains and finishes despite some people saying they don t hold their value as much as hamers i ve noticed that it is tough to get a good quality carvin for less than 500 a higher quality and or newer carvin tends to go for 700 or 800 on ebay however from painful experience i ve found that carvins from the 80s can develop some significant problems it may be that carvin had more quality control problems in the 80s than hamer or it may be that i ve just hit some of the worst that had not been cared for well but the 90s and even more the 00s seem to be excellent guitars worthy of having a few in your stable the main things i like about carvins is that they have awesome single coil tones from their ap 11s and i really like the rock distorted tone they provide from their c22n and c22t i did try an m22sd once and it was a little too hot noisy trebly but that could have just been the guitar i don t know if their 11 pole pieces really helps maintain tone but i ve liked the tone of every carvin i ve ever played so now that my xt satf gateway drug has gone hardcore in my first hamer usa shredder i m planning on getting both carvins and hamer usas from here on out except that i m done buying guitars now of course right 3 comments filed under guitar me march 20 2009 10 21 pm what is the deal with guitar tone seinfeld i love me some 80s hair metal bands but going back and listening to them these days i am sometimes struck by how bad some of their tone is i do love seymour duncan tone even in the duncan design pickups at least paired with import hamer bodies maybe my favorite tone of all is zz top or maybe neal schon on escape and frontiers or some chinese guys i can t name because their music scene is mostly about the singers not the backing musicians very few bands even fewer guitar heroes or that you would have heard of for even those i can name but for as much as i like loudness akira s tone on lightning strikes kinda sucks it is sort thin and almost sounds synthesized at times thunder in the east is a little better but not much and i even sometimes think that the guitar tone in night ranger is bad brad gillis distortion takes him into areas that stop sounding much like a guitar to me and jeff watson sometimes gets the nasal whiny sound i don t like from les paul with some amps distortion styles levels maybe it was because they were just learning to deal with the tone suck of floyd rose trem systems it does seem like it took some time for pickup designers to successfully develop good pickups for the shredder guitars i was listening to offspring the other day and loving their tone i loved their tone so much that i figured they might just be playing hamers nope they play ibanez ibanez aren t they known for thin tone and even if not every guitar pickup offering from them is thin how can they have a thick rich sound that i associate with hamer or am i just smoking crack in any case i m not going out and buying any ibanez guitars or selling my hamers and carvin what is good tone heck wow do you even describe tone i don t have time now but when i deploy i m going to make some short clips of guitar tones that i really like and post them here in mp3 in hopes that someone with more knowledge than me can help me figure out how to replicate the tones i m hearing like is it overdrive or distortion or fuzz or what any compression room studio setting for reverb seems to make a difference in the sound i like here s one of the sounds i like a good crunch but not fuzzing to the point where you don t hear the pick attack i like for a string dampened scratch to have lots and lots of overtone harmonics so there is almost a recognizable tone so it almost sounds as if the guitar itself is anguished like the sound is being dragged from the guitar by force another sound i like zz top as i ve said a few times now especially on tush but also la grange and rough boy to a certain extent in an entirely different vein i really like the menace in george lynch s tone on under lock and key but going back and listening to the old stuff it really seems like warren de martini and jake e lee had similar tones but much much thinner weaker nuno bettencourt seems to get some pretty good tone on pornograffiti but he s part of the over emotive school of guitar shredding which sometimes leaves me cold or maybe a better way to put it is that i have a problem when a guitarist s tone is bigger than he is i like dan huff s tone in giant who doesn t love evh s tone on the first few albums but these are all humbucker tones single coil strat tones are a whole nother animal it s harder to point out a specific guitarist who sticks with a consistent tone that i like but there are specific parts of specific songs i can point to as being something i like like almost anything by srv or james young s middle position or the guitar tone on rick springfield s jesse s girl but to me perhaps it is best to say that single coil tones are always supporting i like them if they complement the song whereas the humbucker tones are more of an integral main portion and can make or break the song itself
