yet alan porritt file photo aap abc net au news green labor crisis live 4587010 link copied share share article on a day in which the federal government s leadership was once again thrown into turmoil drum columnist jonathan green gives his analysis of the latest updates times in aedt 5 44pm last words go to spike milligan who sadly couldn t be with us this afternoon suddenly nothing happened mind you it happened suddenly 5 35pm a bizarre day says tony abbott accepting the 50 metre penalty walking to the end of the goal square and booting the ball into the second tier the civil war goes on he might have a point there he wants an election now presumably he d like one like the one they just had in the labor caucus with only one candidate maybe that s what labor is handing him by default he s praising the crossbenchers hoping for a change of mind 5 28pm and the afternoon winds down half an hour to the evening news not much else to see here the pm and wayne swan emerge to make statements of their serious intent one assumes this has been as the pm might have put it a day for campaigning not so much for the government but that is the impression they are keen to leave us with they re getting on with it united and resolved swan has a budget to prepare gillard a country to run let s all forget this moment of unpleasantness and now a word from the leader of the opposition to tony abbott goes the afternoon s last word one of them might will be gift followed by free and kick he s up next 5 18pm tim southpomasane is waxing philosophic without courage one does not deserve to lead spill tim soutphommasane timsout march 21 2013 and i wonder from that corner of the mind that still naggingly insists there might be political action not motivated by cynicism whether kevin rudd may have had a genuine crisis of conscience does he feel genuinely constrained or just shy of a fight in which the outcome in anything less than certain it s amusing to imagine that it was a true case of strenuous internal combat in which the nobler angels of his nature prevailed 5 06pm it s been an utter farce chris uhlmann tells abc news 24 yes with overtones of the absurd on twitter mr denmore has been watching the joel fitzgibbon presser a sentence never said before in human history mr fitzbiggon will you still go to the whips conference in ecuador tomorrow mr denmore mrdenmore march 21 2013 seems as good a place as any many would probably think 5 00pm is peter costello the inevitable comparison is kevin rudd the man who might have been if only he had mustered the ticker for the fight fitzgibbon emerges but will not say whether he will walk away as chief whip i am driven only by the best interests of the party does that leave him with any choice 4 56pm a certain amount of tone creeping in to the questions of the press pack a sense that they chief among us all have been denied this afternoon the press revved up for this drove it surfed it then savored for an hour or two this afternoon the inevitable approaching climax to be denied the emerging narrative just watch this is not over there is no settlement 4 53pm the clinking of glasses you just heard came fro the offices of the leader of the opposition what a gift this afternoon has been what a vivid portrait of division and dysfunction outside the caucus the assembled adolescents of the press corps assault chris hayes a man whose prime responsibility if to organise caucus ballots but who is now being grilled on the future of his party whether the public should have continuing faith whether there would be further contests it can only be a metre of time before he is asked to give his view on the nature of dark matter or the possible future variation of deep ocean currents 4 47pm the overwhelming impression you would have to say is of a shambles how did we get to this point of hysteria a logical extension of the usual end of session thursday madness here come the results the pm seconded by the deputy pm has moved a spill motion for all positions one nomination for the position leader of the parliamentary labor party julia gillard one nomination for deputy wayne swan both elected unopposed 4 43pm and yes you d have to say that liberal party pollster mark textor has a point wait there s still that guy who could allegedly successfully get an actual root in a brothel spill competence mark textor markatextor march 21 2013 could there still be another contender 4 42pm out there in the twitterverse patience is wearing thin tis easy to stand on principle when u don t have the numbers good one kev spill let this be it stephen feneley feneleyandco march 21 2013 after all that build up rudd springs a caucus interruptus no one is going to come out of this satisfied spill auspol steve pennells pennells march 21 2013 time for the white anters to stfu for good and focus on their effort on fighting the opposition instead of themselves wouldn t you say mr denmore mrdenmore march 21 2013 4 38pm so where were we then goodness what a fuss over nothing what can we take out of this as julia gillard strides into caucus to be elected unopposed well simon crean s authority over caucus appears to be fatally undermined joke graham richardson is telling anyone who will listen that kevin rudd is playing a long game it s probably safe to say that on the evidence of this afternoon his party isn t 4 21pm wouldn t you love to hear the speeches that are about to be delivered in the labor caucus room presumably there will be at least one from julia gillard will she reprise her offering in the house this afternoon ramp up the rhetoric present an impression of strength oh there s kevin rudd i am not prepared to dishonour my word which i gave solemnly i will therefore adhere to that word so kevin rudd will not stand are we sitting in slack jawed amazement yet 4 12pm can there be any positive outcome for labor other than a rudd victory no other outcome resolves the lingering tension a close contest with gillard victorious takes us back to square one the leadership tenuous and contested for rudd not to stand just renders the whole affair laughable is the leadership of the alp so poisonous in these last months before the next federal poll that his shy of talking it not a good look 4 02pm according to the financial review s james massola rudd supporter says a delegation of mps have just visited rudd to urge him to stand in the interests of the party spill james massola jamesmassola march 21 2013 what is he doesn t raise his hand what then how does the alp recover from such an open show of disunity and despair according to channel ten s stephen spencer rudd had leadership runs in 2002 2003 2004 2005 2010 2012 but withdrew from 02 03 04 and 10 and lost 12 can t squib this one stephen spencer sspencer_63 march 21 2013 crikey s bernard keane it s not clear at this point that we ll even know if rudd is standing or not before 4 30 one backer says bernard keane bernardkeane march 21 2013 29 minutes to go 3 55pm and now we wait the agony begins for 24 hour news presenters fill fill fill sky news has a countdown clock on the abc lyndal curtis will be wishing any minute now that the abc would go commercial so that at least she could have the relief of throwing to a break footage of corridors cameras waiting crews and it s not over yet once the meeting is called the real wait begins journalists ears straining by the caucus doors waiting for a telltale round of applause the parliamentary equivalent of a puff of white smoke 3 48pm rudd s office crowded with mps urging him on rudd torn no decision yet why did crean pull the switch was it panic had the position become irretrievable and if it was desperate and impossible before crean spoke how will things stand if later this afternoon we have a return of the status quo the message of the past week has been damning the failure of the media reform package a telling moment a significant legislative package bungled in formation and execution bungled in part because the ministers steering it through cabinet were loathe to expose the package to close scrutiny for fear that their opponents rudd friendly would leak hostile snippets against it and then the last straw when gillard failed to see the package through the house this nibbled at her legitimacy the leader whose claim to power rested on her capacity to stitch a deal in a minority government to swing the votes from the cross benches and make a positive outcome from a nest or conflicting interests not this time and where did that leave her well vulnerable we see that now 3 39pm it s close real close barrie cassidy tells abc news 24 less than an hour to go and how many tentative votes were swayed by the prime minister s performance in the tail end of today s aborted question time as she pleaded the case for her government s record of achievement surely the short period of notice for the spill called at 2pm to be resolved at 4 30 is in her favor precious little time for rudd to bolster numbers that seem if not short of the majority required then divided between supporters who want blood and others sympathetic to his cause who want something more graceful and orderly who dread the public impression of a party bent on routine regicide 3 34pm and there s the first true victim of this afternoon of uncertain knives simon crean dumped from his various ministerial responsibilities he must have seen this coming when he opened that vein at 1pm will there be another victim this afternoon when the caucus finally meets at 4 30pm to rule a line under the past 12 months of muttered rumour and unrest if you were a punter you d say not that kevin rudd will not stand unless confident of the result and as this stand or at least as the latest reports of the numbers suggest he has no reason for that confidence yet and where would that leave this government rattled bloodied the cancer still gnawing from within jonathan green hosts
