which was rarely present in fitzgerald s 1920s fiction but is central here which is a great deal of psychological interpretation it sometimes feels as if fitzgerald has read all the psychology innocence as though a series of pure accidents had driven them together so many accidents that at last they were forced to conclude that they were for each other they had arrived with clean hands or so it seemed after no traffic with the merely curious and clandestine 1 17 zelda s madness the simple biographical cause is that fitzgerald s wife zelda had a psychotic breakdown in 1930 and in 1932 after meetings with numerous specialists was hospitalised for schizophrenia in baltimore during those two distressing years fitzgerald visited numerous psychiatrists and read numerous textbooks acquiring the mindset and the phraseology is dick a realistic portrait of an american psychiatrist circa 1925 i doubt it here s the advice he gives to incest survivor nicole you re all well he said there either fitzgerald is under no obligation to provide his protagonist with interesting views about anything i m just pointing out how strangely opinionless dick is on the subject which is meant to be his area of expertise where he s meant to have written definitive textbooks 2 incest and abuse daddy s girl loads of readers love the great gatsby based on their generalised memories of its 1920s parties and fantastic flapper outfits these fans conveniently overlook the issues of adultery marital misery jealousy insanity murder and revenge which is what the story is actually about in the same way in searching for the 1948 version online i came across many fans declaring tender to be one of their favourite books and praising the romance of the love story the glamour of the riviera scenes etc all tending to gloss over the fact that at the centre of the book is a survivor of family sex abuse and incest correct me if i m wrong and i may be wrong but my impression is that during my lifetime certainly in the last 25 years since the turn of the century society as a whole public discourse has become steadily more and more sensitive to the issue of child sex abuse family abuse surviving abuse and so on there s an article on the subject more or less every day in the guardian as well as stories on radio 4 in the wider press on the telly just yesterday i was reading about the retrial of harvey weinstein the trigger for the metoo movement today i read a review of a documentary about rape victims so i feel like i read or hear something about these issues pretty much every day and have been doing so for years as a result it feels to me i may be wrong that society as a whole is much much more sensitised to issues around child abuse sex abuse rape and so on than it was even ten years ago in this modern context it s impossible to read about the family rape and abuse of nicole without it creating massive shockwaves for me it dwarfs everything else was the same kind of thing taken as seriously 100 years ago when the novel is set or in the 1940s when cowley published his edition and wrote his introduction which i don t think even mentions the abuse and incest or in the 1960s when penguin published his edition how seriously should the reader take it should we let it spoil our appreciation of the novel should we compartmentalise it as historic attitudes which we note disapprove of and move on on this as on the question of his fissile prose style i found myself overwhelmed by contradictions and can t settle on one view 3 blacks black people crop up in many of fitzgerald s stories in stories set in the north they appear as servants butlers and chauffeurs in stories set in the south they are more prominent as people in the street workers in the fields and so on but they re always background to the main story which of course concerns white folk of fitzgerald s class this makes the depiction of the black milieu abe north gets mixed up in in paris and which leads to the murder of mr peterson of stockholm all the more puzzling and insofar as the main characters themselves don t understand what s going on doubly bewildering it would be easy to criticise fitzgerald in the modern woke manner for playing to the trope of black people as criminals and probably as easy to pick on other details of vocabulary or description for example to be scandalised when dick tells nicole look here you mustn t get upset over this it s only some n scrap 1 25 i ve redacted the offending word it s printed in full in the text but to me the question is why he chose at this crucial moment when rosemary discovers nicole s mental frailty to make the trigger for her little breakdown this incomprehensible little sub plot about black murder someone with a better overall grasp of the themes of the novel may be able to explain or to unpack the dense knot of issues which i can feel is crammed into this bizarre incident but i m not clever enough to properly unravel author wisdom the novel is the most successful modern literary form because it is so infinitely flexible one of its many possible contents is wisdom writing where an author can sound off about human nature to their heart s content it s a rare novel that doesn t try to ground its story and comments on its character on sweeping generalisations about human nature about men or women marriage or whatever compared to what i ve just been discussing some of them are incredibly simple and innocent unlike american trains that were absorbed in an intense destiny of their own and scornful of people on another world less swift and breathless this train was part of the country through which it passed 1 3 on being young and lovely and rich and america it was fun spending money in the sunlight of the other novels as i said towards the start on paper it s a simple story about a couple who fall in love get married then drift apart and end up getting divorced but it packs so much onto that simple scaffold that i found reading it and then thinking about it a wonderful frustrating troubling and mystifying experience andré le vot s summary tender is the night might be called the swan song for fitzgerald s first style baroque sumptuous soaring bravura le vot p 308 contemporary songs early in their affair as dick comes to see nicole while she s still at the clinic she plays him hit songs of
