2026 kini the work ethic in america needs to change employers struggle to fill open positions and too many people refuse to work according to the u s bureau of labor statistics bls job openings and labor turnover summary there are about 7 4 million open jobs in the united states ironicly there are about 7 2 million american men in their prime working years 25 to 54 who are completely outside the labor force meaning they are neither employed nor looking for work a detailed study by the bipartisan policy center found that 57 of these men cite physical mental or behavioral health conditions as the reason they cannot look for work only about 30 state they are out of the workforce purely by choice some people say employers don t pay enough and the government should set a minimum wage they argue that employers are greedy and that if employers paid more money then more jobs would be filled they reason when workers are paid more consumer spending increases which can help grow the economy but this also means employers may need to raise prices on their products or reduce jobs and shorten hours they argue that a legal wage floor helps low income workers afford basic needs like housing and food it prevents extreme worker exploitation when labor market competition is weak extreme worker exploitation is prevented by labor laws minimum wage or entry level jobs are for people entering the job force or those needing additional income these are not salary paying jobs to retire on others maintain that raising the minimum wage would constrain employment and ultimately lead to job losses data shows that when governement mandates wages jobs dry up and employers end up leaving wages should be set by free market supply and demand forces rather than government mandates the government doesn t produce goods and services it taxes them the government has no business setting wage rates it is not the private employer there should be neither minimum nor maximum wage rates wages should be determined solely by the employer and the consumer market will determine whether the business thrives or dies employers frequently complain that job candidates lack foundational professional habits such as showing up on time taking initiative accepting constructive feedback and handling routine workplace stress sure greed fits into the job equation but so does work ethic workers are not entitled to a job and employers cannot expect to keep and retain workers without adequate compensation that s why there s an interview process if the employee believes the pay is too low then they can find employment elsewhere there are plenty of employers with jobs that need to be filled and they will pay what the market can bear labor day s purpose is to recognize the vital
