this is my entry for this week s w3 poetry challenge judy dykstra brown as the poet of the week has set the challenge to write a poem in any form in response to the prompt a 78 year old woman blows out candles on the birthday cake one refuses to be blown out no matter how hard she tries it burns with a blue flame and whispers a name she hasn t heard in 40 years the poem is a conversation with the candle what does she decide to do let it burn or pinch it out it was my birthday to enjoy with a cake and 78 candles blazing but one refused to go out whispering simone in a sibilant tone mocking me shocking me into silence i remembered and kept my silence no longer able to smile or enjoy that name said in an accusatory tone as guilt and shame flamed to blazing afraid that i d be found out she d done horrible things when out but made sure that corpses stayed silenced the candle remained stubbornly blazing hissing just try to enjoy i ve lived well and kindly to atone i recalled her belligerent tone she locked the door just try to get out the fire licked the walls to a faint enjoy until the screams faded to silence she was pleased with the blue blazing i watched the candle melted but still blazing my slow motion halted the party tone even the grandchildren fell into silence as i watched wax pool and flame sputter out only then could i freely laugh and enjoy enjoyment restored with a heart blazing and unfound out i admit murder is tone deaf and the old me is now silenced i chose to write a pentina this is a form developed in 1995 by an american leigh harrison as a variation mean crazy scary but crazy haha the vacation ended it was back to work responding to a call we ducked under the yellow police tape and were stopped in the middle of the drive by the michelin man in black the bomb squad was removing what was believed to be the murder weapon a saucepan of bullets cooked dry we could just make out the victim face down on a formica table it was going to be awhile before we had access the lady of the house was cuffed and in the back of a black and white she was a bona fide throwback to june cleaver right down to the apron and 1950s hairstyle she looked confused as the car pulled away from the curb other than the man at the table the house was immaculate the refrigerator screamed ocd with all the eggs large end up and the tupperware lined up exactly one finger width apart it was arranged with simplicity and economy like they taught in home ec classes the man had been killed by a single bullet to the temple i lost the coin toss and went back to interview the wife she was a prim woman of nearly eighty years you would think that someone who had just committed a murder would be filled with emotional flotsam and at least a little anxiety she was cool as she confided that her husband was a confessed werewolf her whole married life he had controlled and dominated criticized and berated her she told me that her husband had insisted she cook the uncategorized 11 comments august 19 2026 august 17 2026 1 minute looking at squid i love all seafood i haven t found any fish or seafood i haven t liked i introduced sparky to the joys of real crab and fresh lobster and of course shrimp to save money we used to dine on sardines on crackers yum and i d buy the cheap fish aka shark steaks but one of the dishes i really love is squid because my parents introduced me to a variety of cuisines from around the world i ve done the same for my children and by default sparky i d had a korean dish called ojingeochae bokkeum it was so tasty that i regularly make this as a treat i m fortunate that the oriental market in town carried the squid and all the required ingredients ingredients 2 t oil peanut rice bran or olive oil will work 4 t karo syrup or you can substitute half honey and half karo 2 t soy sauce 3 cloves garlic minced 2 drops fish oil 1 6 t gochujang korean chili paste i use only 1 2 t because i m a spice wimp 6 oz shredded squid 1 t sesame seeds i use the black seeds place the oil karo syrup soy sauce fish oil chili paste and garlic in a deep skillet or wok bring this to a boil stirring mix in the squid and coat it with the sauce stir and turn the squid until it is slightly translucent remove from the heat and sprinkle with the sesame seeds serve with rice i topped my rice with seto fumi furikake a rice seasoning any form or length using the theme of doing something you ve done before that feels like you are doing it for the first time the only requirement is to use the word again in the poem every day i stand sink a chore that must be done again and again i m the one every day i stand at the sink i wrote this using the form of a catena rondo the catena rondo was created by robin skelton he took the name from catena which means chain and connected it with rondo which means circle it becomes obvious why this name was chosen when you read a catena rondo the form is composed of any number of 4 line stanzas each stanza has a rhyme of a1 b1 b a1 b1 c1 c b1 c1 d1 d c1 etc with the last stanza being identical to the first stanza so here s the scoop on how this subject came to pass at easter i served my usual feast using the good china these dishes are from the days before microwaves and dishwashers they have a metallic silver rim and are very delicate both in construction and pattern so they debts i made it clear to dumbo that we were partners not a couple he made it clear that he liked my family and loved my mother s potato salad and fully intended to get more of both i took interrogation 101 from my father and advanced courses from my mother determined to uncover dumbo s motives for fraternizing with my family i initiated the inquisition he cracked easily he pulled a newspaper clipping from his wallet the headline read dinosaur catches fire at ohio amusement park as he handed it to me he mumbled that his mother had sent it to him prompted by my practiced puzzled look he spilled the dinosaur was part of his childhood and he felt he was losing all connection with his roots oozing homesickness like pus he admitted that he missed his family a family as wacky as session it was actually out of commission for the last week of the previous session and the intervening 3 week pause between classes that meant that after 2 weeks of the session they stopped bisque firing everyone s work so there wasn t an overflow on the glaze shelves thus this session has started with 2 pieces from the session before last coming out of the glaze kiln they started putting work through the bisque kiln so 4 pieces that i glazed that are waiting their turn to be glaze fired i even got 2 pieces from last session through on the 2nd glaze firing and miracle of miracles they came out flawlessly no breakage and the glazes actually came out with good colors so without further ado i precent the latest orbs this one is aspidolithicus parcus constrictus it is an extinct subspecies of calcareous nannofossil belonging to the coccolithophorid algae group from the late cretaceous epoch i glazed it in oribe the original formulation with royal blue accents oribe when fired under reduction breaks a rosy color where the glaze is thicker when applied thinly it has a pale green hue this one is exactly how i expected it to look this is pontosphaera japonica one i ve done before but wanted to do it again as i gave away the first one i glazed this one with a heavy red iron oxide stain on the discs with grape in between and on the rims of the discs although the grape is a little thin on the rims it looks much better in the spaces with a dark rich purple color this one is campylosphaera dela it is an extinct species of calcareous nannofossil coccolithophore first described in 1961 from the paleogene equatorial pacific this one is exceptional there is phil s celadon glaze in the spaces between the cross and outer rim as well as in the area between the discs the raised parts of the discs the rim and cross are coated with a thick red iron oxide stain resulting in a metallic look what is so magnificent is that i put shaner clear glaze over the phil s celadon between the discs and it went pink pink you have no idea how difficult it is to get pink this is syracosphaera histrica a northwestern mediterranean coccolithophore it is a marine single celled species of coccolithophore belonging to the family syracosphaeraceae first described in 1941 this microscopic algae produces intricate microscopic calcium carbonate plates i glazed this one with oribe again the original formulation with royal blue in between the discs i had anticipated that it would have light green discs with a blue background i was very pleasantly surprised share this share on
