certainly in the last 25 years since the turn of the century society as a whole public discourse has become steadily more and more sensitive to the issue of child sex abuse family abuse surviving abuse and so on there s an article on the subject more or less every day in the guardian as well as stories on radio 4 in the wider press on the telly just yesterday i was reading about the retrial of harvey weinstein the trigger for the metoo movement today i read a review of a documentary about rape victims so i feel like i read or hear something about these issues pretty much every day and have been doing so for years as a result it feels to me i may be wrong that society as a whole is much much more sensitised to issues around child abuse sex abuse rape and so on than it was even ten years ago in this modern context it s impossible to read about the family rape and abuse of nicole without it creating massive shockwaves for me it dwarfs everything else was the same kind of thing taken as seriously 100 years ago when the novel is set or in the 1940s when cowley published his edition and wrote his introduction which i don t think even mentions the abuse and incest or in the 1960s when penguin published his edition how seriously should the reader take it should we let it spoil our appreciation of the novel should we compartmentalise it as historic attitudes which we note disapprove of and move on on this as on the question of his fissile prose style i found myself overwhelmed by contradictions and can t settle on one view 3 blacks black people crop up in many of fitzgerald s stories in stories set in the north they appear as servants butlers and chauffeurs in stories set in the south they are more prominent as people in the street workers in the fields and so on but they re always background to the main story which of course concerns white folk of fitzgerald s class this makes the depiction of the black milieu abe north gets mixed up in in paris and which leads to the murder of mr peterson of stockholm all the more puzzling and insofar as the main characters themselves don t understand what s going on doubly bewildering it would be easy to criticise fitzgerald in the modern woke manner for playing to the trope of black people as criminals and probably as easy to pick on other details of vocabulary or description for example to be scandalised when dick tells nicole look here you mustn t get upset over this it s only some n scrap 1 25 i ve redacted the offending word it s printed in full in the text but to me the question is why he chose at this crucial moment when rosemary discovers nicole s mental frailty to make the trigger for her little breakdown this incomprehensible little sub plot about black murder someone with a better overall grasp of the themes of the novel may be able to explain or to unpack the dense knot of issues which i can feel is crammed into this bizarre incident but i m not clever enough to properly unravel author wisdom the novel is the most successful modern literary form because it is so infinitely flexible one of its many possible contents is wisdom writing where an author can sound off about human nature to their what i ve just been discussing some of them are incredibly simple and innocent unlike american trains that were absorbed in an intense destiny of their own and scornful of people on another world less
