craparo said that he would approve payment for college courses i thought about what ray eberle had said yep i know i had already taken 19 other courses by this point but i had not been working toward any kind of degree ray had predicted 2 to 3 years in one year and 6 months i was working on my mba so it seems that ray eberle knew me a lot better than i knew myself i looked up what dell s preferred university was for an mba master of business administration saint regis university in denver was one of their preferred choices so i applied to the university once i was accepted i showed up at john s desk with an invoice for my tuition john visited with me for a few minutes and then signed the paper he just wanted someone to come and talk to him for each of the 10 courses i showed up at john s desk each time he smiled and asked me how things were coming along then he signed the invoice at the end of the fall semester in 2005 i obtained my mba in finance i now had mba added to my signature this didn t seem to matter to our it department there was no raise or anything this was just a few months before i left it to go to work in the business for employee services by january 2006 my hidden drive to obtain college degrees had exhausted itself the mba would be my last degree of course i continued taking courses at dell you had to keep up with technology which was always changing now that i m retired i don t study computer related topics i study the bible and the doctrines of the catholic church i read history books i am currently reading all of charles dicken s novels in the order that he wrote them i also read science fiction and fantasy novels each day i spend at least an hour and a half reading books when i was in high school i remember my friend since the 2nd grade charles brent stewart telling us about the time he spent the night over at donald fleming s house charles brent stewart he said after dinner don s family went into the living room they each grabbed a book and started to read he sat there looking at this family reading and thought how interesting it was one of the smartest guys in high school went home each night and after dinner he would read that thought dell break dancing by plant electrician on july 13 2026 leave a comment when i was a janitor at the power plant in north central oklahoma in 1983 i remember receiving my copy of meter magazine in the mail as i thumbed through the fascinating articles about the exciting events that had been happening across the great state of oklahoma with linemen competitions and new substation groundbreakings when i turned the pages to the center of the magazine i found that the magazine contained a plastic 45 record for those of you who don t know this we used to listen to music on records to hear the songs that we liked we did this by taking a round disk and putting it on a contraption called a turntable otherwise known as a record player no really i m not making this up 45 records we called the smaller records 45s because they rotated 45 times each minute on the turntable each side of the 45 had one individual song on it in order to play another song you had to take the record off of the turntable and put another one on it they even had some turntables that automatically dropped the next record on top of the first record so you just had to be patient as an arm with a needle on it and no i m not talking about drugs at least not yet lifted up and move out of the way while the next record dropped down on the table incredible right we even had these things called record albums that had multiple songs on each side these albums only rotated 33 1 3 times each minute why your guess is as good as mine i suspect it was so that the record would play longer though i noticed that the songs didn t seem to be any slower than the same song played on a 45 actually it makes sense since the album is bigger in circumference so when the needle is out on the end of the record it is actually travelling across more of the record than a 45 does the circumference of an album spinning at 33 1 3 rpm is 33 7 inches so in one minute the needle travels over 1 257 inches 33 333 x 33 7 while a 45 record has a circumference of 22 inches so in one minute the needle only travels 990 inches 22 x 45 of course as the needle moves toward the center of the record it travels at a slower rate so i suppose the first song on the album has a higher fidelity than one toward the middle hmm i never thought of that before anyway in the middle of my meter magazine i wish i had a picture of one of these magazines was a plastic floppy record we didn t even have floppy disks in 1983 i mean the general public had not seen a floppy disk we had them for our new phone computer but i didn t know that yet oh yeah for those of you who don t know what a floppy disk is it was something you stuck in a computer disk drive to load a program or save data it looked like this floppy disks the one on the left is an 8 inch floppy this was the size we used for our rolm phone computer the orange disk is a 5 1 4 inch floppy the low density floppy disk had 360k memory that s 360 000 bytes the blue disk is called a 3 1 2 inch disk and the low density version of that had 720 000 bytes it could hold as a side note when my dad bought his first box of 10 low density 5 1 4 disks he came home and said each one of these disks holds 360 000 pieces of information i will never be able to fill up 10 disks with documents that s 3 and a half million pieces of information put a smiley face here end of side note anyway back to the floppy record i found in the meter magazine i carefully removed it from the page and put in on my record player so i could listen to it when it began to play i heard a song or a jingle that went like this we re og e your electric company we bring you electric power every week day and hour we re og e it is true yes we re og e your electric company we have money saving programs just for you in case you weren t aware companies would often advertise their products on tv and the radio using jingles so burger king was something like this hold the pickles hold the lettuce special orders don t upset us all we ask is that you let us serve it your way have it your way have it your way at burger king i remember a few years later some media people came to our plant to film a commercial where they had two people meeting each other on the turbine room floor and they shook hands when they filmed it the turbine room floor was still very shiny from where i had waxed it when i was a janitor even though at that point i was an electrician i was proud to see the shiny floor and even the turbine reflecting the overhead lights because they were so shiny so years later i found myself working at dell you can read all about how that happened by thumbing through my posts about when i went back to school and then was interviewed by dell and finally moved down to round rock texas anyway even before i went to work for dell they had this new advertisement with this guy they called steven he had this catchphrase dude you re getting a dell you may remember him ben curtis saying dude you re getting a dell this was a successful campaign while it lasted it went on for over 2 years at one point while my family was walking in a dell 5k walkathon for the junior diabetes research foundation at the dell diamond which is a minor league baseball stadium ben curtis showed up to sign autographs my daughter was able to get his autograph at that time the dell diamond is just about 3 miles from my house the dell diamond home of the round rock express the round rock express is a minor league baseball team affiliated with the texas rangers the principal owner of the round rock express baseball team is nolan ryan for those of you who don t remember ben curtis as the dell dude here is a youtube video where ben curtis talks about the time he spent when he created 26 commercials for dell so why did i mention break dancing in the title of this post well after we had walked the 5 kilometers for the walkathon for the junior diabetes research foundation jdrf ben curtis the dude you re getting a dell guy wanted to show everyone how he could break dance so he did some moves where he was on the floor spinning around on his back and swinging his legs around an example of someone break dancing if you watched the ben curtis video above you know that a couple of months after this event at the dell diamond ben curtis was let go from dell as an actor for our commercials there were two reasons for this ben knows that he was fired because he was caught buying illegal drugs from someone since dell has a zero tolerance policy for these sorts of activities he had to go what ben didn t know but many dell employees did was that the company had already decided that after over 2 years the effectiveness of steven saying dude you re getting a dell was waning the company was going to end the commercials anyway it s unfortunate that he was arrested when he was if that had happened a month later it probably wouldn t have had the same amount of press that it did while he was still working for dell so this brings me to two comparisons i would like to make between working at the power plant and working at dell the first one is that while working at dell you knew right away that michael dell had no tolerance for dishonesty there were so many ways with millions of computers and servers being shipped all over the world that if you had one dishonest person in the organization it could mean that millions of dollars could be stolen very quickly michael dell i was honored to work for the founder of the company who even though he could be ruthless he demanded excellence in his employees especially when it came to integrity dell had an ethics department if you spotted anything that looked suspicious you could contact this department and tell them about it they took this seriously once when i saw an anomaly in the finance data and i contacted the ethics department about it the head of the department called me personally and thanked me for bringing it to their attention the ethics department investigated it and even though they didn t find anything right away later they found out that something was seriously wrong michael dell himself had to pay a fine because what i found supported something another person reported a month later this led to the company having to repost their quarterly reports for multiple quarters the best part about this was that michael dell was glad about what had been found he was the one that made sure this company had an ethics department in the first place i always felt protected as a whistleblower contrast this with the power plant each plant manager seemed to have supreme power over the employees at the plant some managers were better than others i wrote about an instance in the post take a note jan said the supervisor of power production in this instance when martin louthan had come to our plant for his yearly meeting the maintenance crews complained that the plant manager and assistant manager would regularly lie to them they would make up rules on their own and then say they came from oklahoma city headquarters louthan said if he couldn t do anything unless he had specific examples so the next time we had an example we had our maintenance supervisor contact him to tell him we wanted to have a meeting when martin was confronted with an obvious example of both the plant manager and the assistant plant manager lying to us it was brushed away as a misunderstanding this was just one example this attitude allowed for the upper management at the plant to act dishonestly i explained another example of this in the post power plant secrets found during daily mail run eldon waugh after that episode the plant manager eldon waugh and the assistant plant manager bill moler made it a priority to attempt to fire those people who had instigated having their lie exposed luckily for me larry riley stood up for me long enough to be able to move into the electric shop where leroy godfrey was in an ongoing war with eldon and bill bill moler these two guys were friendly when they weren t at the plant if you visited eldon waugh s booth at the farmer s market while he was selling his honey he would be very pleasant bill moler was an upright deacon in the catholic church however when they entered the plant grounds the lure of absolute power seemed to overcome them without an ethics department there was no one to turn to to report issues it s my way or the highway during the time when these two were in charge orville ferguson the supervisor of maintenance before ken scott would say did you see the line of people waiting outside the plant on the first tuesday of the month be lucky you have a job he was referring to people coming to the plant to apply for jobs every first tuesday of the month the electric company had a strict rule for a long time about not hiring near relatives of any employees in order to avoid the appearance of nepotism that is favoring people related to you however if you were a fraternity brother in college then you were promoted above someone more qualified by your brother who had a higher position knowing this there were some people who could act like total jerks and still be promoted when the right job opened up no ethics department to look into that what i am...
