came out in august and was at the top of the ny times fiction best seller list by the end of september where it remained for seven weeks even though the times own reviewer called it dull dull dull in a pretentious florid and archly fatuous fashion evidently that s exactly what the american reading public was in the mood for because it was in its third printing within days and had sold 100 000 copies within three weeks several critics called lolita a masterpiece beautiful comic poetic some found it dull repulsive pretentious artistically and morally bad 64 years later readers are leaving similar reviews on amazon and goodreads a book report that would probably not have been approved by my high school english teachers you can easily find a detailed synopsis of lolita online if you re interested so i won t spend time retelling the story here what i will do is go through the elements of the book that stood out to me and shaped my thoughts on it and then briefly speculate on why it was a best seller in 1958 prologue i am a habitual preface prologue skipper but i ended up reading this one because as i glanced at it i realized it was in the voice of a fictional character with a fictional phd and therefore part of the story here we learn that the account we are about to read was written by a man who has died in prison while awaiting his trial and who chooses to be identified by the pseudonym humbert humbert and that this phd guy edited the manuscript for posthumous publication he gives us a bit of information about the real characters in the true story and uses a whole lot of words to assure us the book does not use obscene language indeed the robust philistine who is conditioned by modern conventions into accepting without qualms a lavash array of four letter words in a banal novel will be quite shocked by their absence here nevertheless the editor lets us know up front that we re not supposed to like the author he is horrible he is abject he is a shining example of moral leprosy a mixture of ferocity and jocularity that betrays supreme misery perhaps but is not conducive to attractiveness he is ponderoulsy capricious he is abnormal he is not a gentleman at the same time he tells us the book is worthwhile as a case history lolita will become no doubt a classic in psychiatric circles in this poignant personal study there lurks a general lesson the wayward child the egotistic mother the panting maniac these are not only vivid characters in a unique story they warn us of dangerous trends they point out potent evils so before we even get started it appears that we re being set up for this story being persuaded on how to think about it and yet the pompously verbose style of the editor makes us question the reliability of his viewpoint before we even get started is nabokov messing with us setting us up for something or is this just part of the story oddly enough with lolita it s important to read the prologue not only before you start but also after you ve finished the book seriously but more on that later characters in a sense we get to know only one character in this story self proclaimed pedophile humbert humbert as a first person narrator his is the only voice we hear and as such we depend solely on him and his perspective even for the comments and motivations of other characters the thing is he is an absolutely unreliable narrator we know this not just because a lot of his commentary sounds more than a bit dodgy he also smugly takes us into conversations where we can observe his deliberate misrepresentation and misdirection humbert obligingly describes himself assuring us that he is an exceptionally handsome male slow moving tall with soft dark hair and a gloomy but all the more seductive cast of demeanor well did i know alas that i could obtain at the snap of my fingers any adult female i chose in fact it had become quite a habit with me of not being too attentive to women lest they come toppling bloodripe into my cold lap so clearly he has no real need to sit on park benches and watch young girls bend over to tighten a roller skate strap or crawl underneath his bench to retrieve a marble he could have any woman he wanted it s just that he is interested only in the mysterious characteristics the fey grace the elusive shifty soul shattering insidious charm of nymphets between the ages of 9 and 14 his conflicting desires to pursue young girls and to stay out of prison bring on fits of melancholy that lead to stays in an expensive sanatorium humbert boasts of how he delighted in trifling with psychiatrists cunningly leading them on never letting them see that you know all the tricks of the trade inventing for them elaborate dreams pure classics in style teasing them with fake primal scenes and never allowing them the slightest glimpse of one s real sexual predicament humbert is painfully aware that his preference for young girls is problematic and he stoically resists acting on his desires he often refers to himself in the third person distancing himself from his internal struggles humbert humbert tried hard to be good really and truly he did he had the utmost respect for ordinary children with their purity and vulnerability and under no circumstances would he have interfered with the innocence of a child if there was the least risk of a row but a demon child a nymphet they seem less innocent so it s their own fault really for being irresistable so we have a narrator who honestly discloses his own dishonesty or does he let the reader beware humbert s musings and obsessions take up nearly all the space in the story leaving little room for the development of any of the other characters the only thing that matters about anyone else is what they can or can t do for him annabel humbert s long lost first love from his early adolescent days on the french riviera receives the only completely positive description however we know little about her other than that she was lovely a few months younger than him and that they were madly clumsily shamelessly agonizingly in love with each other but were too young to ever be far away from watchful adults the one time they managed to slip away to a desolate stretch of sand in the shadow of some rocks they had a brief session of avid caresses with somebody s lost pair of sunglasses for the only witness and then two noisy guys came out of the water whistling and laughing and urging them on four months later she died of typhus leaving humbert with an image of ideal loveliness and passion wrapped in his memories of a girl who would never grow up all adult women in the book are there for humbert s convenience and are completely disposable their personalities are barely acknowledged usually disparaged he spends some time with monique a young prostitute because she has that young nymphet appearance but after a couple of sessions she s showing her age 16 at least and he loses interest he decides to marry for his own safety thinking that it might provide a legal outlet for his urges after considerable deliberation he chooses valeria his doctor s daughter mainly because she looks kind of like a little girl even though she was in her late 20s of course the illusion doesn t last long and he is quickly disenchanted they carry on for four years until she gets bored and leaves him for another man charlotte is lolita s mother humbert s landlady and his second wife they meet when he comes to a small new england town to check out the room she has for rent just as he decides he couldn t stand living in such an untidy house with a woman who was no doubt planning to start a tedious affair with him charlotte takes him to see the garden where from a mat in a pool of sun half naked kneeling there was my riviera love peering at me over dark glasses her daughter lolita who looks just like the cherished image of annabel suddenly charlotte is the ideal landlady humbert describes her as having simple but not unattractive features and being devoid of humor when he first moves in he generally refers to her dismissively as haze her last name he pays little attention to her because he is too busy quietly obsessing over her daughter s every movement but charlotte has clearly been paying attention to humbert because when she takes lolita to summer camp she leaves him a letter professing her love for him and issuing an ultimatum if he doesn t love her he needs to move out if he stays that means he is ready to link up your life with mine forever and ever and be a father to my little girl he marries her with this new intimacy he starts referring to her as charlotte but often she is mrs humbert or my poor wife as she relaxes happily into her new role she becomes more attractive to him but only because he starts to see her resemblance to lolita with the help of a few drinks before bedtime humbert would manage to evoke the child while caressing the mother that s about as positive as his description of her gets charlotte matters only as a means to stay near lolita he begins to experiment with sleeping powders with the goal of drugging both mother and daughter so that he could fondle the latter through the night with perfect impunity then she informs him that she plans to send lolita straight to boarding school after summer camp while he tries to figure out how he can convince her to change her mind she finds the pervy diary he s been keeping about lolita which documents every interaction every glimpse every touch and contains a lot of unflattering comments about his wife she is not happy about it and is ready to throw him out he tries to convince her that she found notes for a novel he was writing he just inserted their names because they were handy he fixes her a drink hoping to calm her down when he returns to the room he receives a phone call and learns that his wife had been hit by a car as she crossed the street to mail some letters problem solved humbert s last relationship with a woman comes some time later after he is separated from lolita rita is a 30ish amiably drunk divorcee that he picks up in a bar they drive around together for two years and he refers to her as the sweetest simplest dumbest rita imaginable the most soothing the most comprehending companion that i ever had probably the nicest thing he s ever said about an adult female again we know little about this woman other than that she drives fast and her drunkenness sometimes gets her into awkward situations humbert notes gratefully that she saved me from the madhouse and her kisses kept me from mischief until he receives a letter from lolita then he kisses rita s brow as she sleeps tapes a goodbye note to her navel and leaves her forever and of course there s lolita also known as dolores lo lola dolly the book is named after her so we might expect to find out a lot about her her thoughts her dreams her disappointments her plans her fears her relationships like we do with rebecca emma anna karinina carrie or coraline but what do we know about lolita her hygiene is not great she chews gum she can be cranky sarcastic cruel and vulgar and has annoying taste in food and music but she is 13 and she looks like annabel and that s enough the time we spend with lolita seeing her through humbert s eyes feels more like stalking and then holding her captive than it feels like getting to know her his relationship with her is all about obsession and possession and that overshadows everything about her what drives me insane is the twofold nature of this nymphet of every nymphet perhaps this mixture in my lolita of tender dreamy childishness and a kind of eerie vulgarity all this gets mixed up with the exquisite stainless tenderness seeping through the musk and the mud through the dirt and the death and what is most singular is that she this lolita my lolita has individualized the writer s ancient lust so that above and over everything there is lolita and yet once he is constantly in her company he makes it clear that the personality and habits of a 13 year old are not quite as irresistable as the blossoming loveliness a combination of naïveté and deception of charm and vulgarity of blue sulks and rosy mirth lolita when she chose could be a most exasperating brat i was not really quite prepared for her fits of disorganized boredom intense and vehement griping her sprawling droopy dopey eyed style mentally i found her to be a disgustingly conventional little girl as we travel along with the two of them however we begin to suspect there is more to lolita that she is up to something behind the scenes she may not be able to control her situation but she learns how to take advantage of opportunities she puts her adolescent moodiness and boredom to great use withholding kisses and embraces but promising greater shows of affection in exchange for special trips ice cream sundaes and cash she knows humbert s weaknesses and how to distract him when he gets suspicious she is patient and seems to be watching and waiting hopefully for a way out riding in cars with lolita i m not sure whether a lot happens in this book or if nothing much happens besides obsessing over sex with a minor but there is a lot of driving as soon as humbert gets lolita to himself they hit the road at first he s trying to distract her while he figures out when to tell her that her mother is dead and once he starts having sex with her there s the whole illegality thing so it s best to keep moving and not spend too much time with anyone who actually knows them nothing wrong with a father and young daughter sharing a motel room right they spend a year driving in a big circle around the us stopping at national parks and roadside attractions eating at roadside diners sometimes lolita meets a few kids in the towns where they stay plays a bit of tennis goes to a roller rink but mostly she is with humbert just driving from town to town from state to state and as they travel he reminds her to keep quiet about their relationship because if he goes to prison she will have nowhere to go and will likely end up in reform school eventually life on the road gets too expensive so they return to new england to settle down and with a rare lapse in ecstatic declarations about his darling humbert gives us a fleeting glimpse at the truth about this runaway roadtrip we had been everywhere we had really seen nothing and i catch myself thinking today that our long journey had only defiled with a sinuous trail of slime the lovely trustful dreamy enormous country that by then in retrospect was no more to us than a collection of dog eared maps ruined tour books old tires and her sobs in the night every night every night the moment i feigned sleep denouement since the plot of this story mainly involves holding onto and sexually abusing a young girl whether driving around the country or staying at home and since referring to plot elements such as rising action or climax is simply too gross to think about for this story let s focus instead on how...
