the experience the audience seemed to be into it too we had a good one who sang along with the songs and oohed and aahed in all the right places i got emotional in all the right spots laughed cried bopped along to the music and hated the primary antagonist of the film joe jackson all the things you re supposed to do when you lose yourself in a movie the movie worked hard to emphasize that michael never really had a childhood or got to simply be a normal child because of his father s obsession with fame and then later on he couldn t really live a normal life because at his level of fame it just wasn t possible it also showed how he didn t really have much in common personality wise with the rest of his family all older siblings which made life very lonely for him there s a scene where michael goes to a toy store he s not thinking too deeply about it he s just there to get some toys but once shoppers realize he s there he gets swamped by fans both inside and outside the store after that we never see him doing regular things like shopping again there s another scene that s after his burn accident where he s in the hospital encountering all these children in the burn unit and decides that even though he s in pain himself he wants to bring them joy so he sings to them and brings them toys the movie accomplished its goal of just being entertaining there are some behind the scenes moments about how certain things got filmed or songs got written like beat it and thriller and i was surprised about how much i knew about michael s life but this is not a very deep movie it s mostly surface level charm which is cool because not everything needs to be a treatise or an existential philosophy like a lot of people i grew up watching michael on tv but i m gen x so i remember him as a child singing with the jackson five on shows like american bandstand and soul train which were not shown everyone is making a huge deal out of jaafar jackson as they should because he s incredible but for me it juliano valdi who was the standout as little michael and for some reason known only to the universe the guy who plays michael s bodyguard really stood out to me i don t know why i just really liked him colman domingo as joe jackson was the perfect villain some filmgoers will note the absence of certain family members like janet who is absolutely nowhere to be seen or even mentioned although latoya is there no there is no mention of the child sexual abuse allegations against michael it is my understanding that they were included in the film but had to be removed because of some type of legal nda but i didn t go to see the movie because i wanted to roll around in michael s trash i don t think anyone did the movie is basically an emotional highlight reel of the first half of michael s career and people seemed to want and need that and not another movie about yet another celebrity scandal meanwhile i have heard there will be a sequel and the allegations against him will most likely be addressed then this is not a perfect film if you re not fan of michael jackson or only want to delve into the scandals then don t bother the primary reason to go is if you re a big fan who really misses him the film hits those nostalgia buttons very hard its not a great film but it s a very good afternoon diversion scared shitless this movie makes no pretense at being anything other than its gleefully stupid self steven ogg is one of those actors you have seen somewhere else but have no idea where which works in his favor here although he doesn t disgrace himself by starring in this nutjob of a movie that is very reminiscent of the splatterfest films of the 80s like society and braindead he stars as a father to a directionless germaphobic son who decides that the boy needs to learn about the family business plumbing so he takes his son on an emergency call to fix the plumbing issues in a building where the problems are being caused by a genetically modified monster that s gotten stuck in the toilets although no one yet knows that this monster periodically reveals itself to the buildings clueless tenants for the purpose of eating them it is now up to the these two plumbers and a much smarter desk clerk played by chelsea clark to rid the building of this monster before it can grow big enough to take over the city plumber dad has all the bravery the desk clerk has the brains and the son mostly just loves his dad and wants to impress him it would have been very easy to make their relationship hateful and toxic but the writers deftly avoid that sonny is frustrated by his dad expectations but never disrespectful and his father while genuinely caring is equally frustrated their relationship is strained but not ugly which made spending time with these characters a lot more likable it s clear that the movie is pretty low budget but that doesn t diminish the fun i had watching this the monster is silly and overtop but still pretty disgusting which made all the kills kind of fun and funny most of the time the movie is predictable you have a pretty good idea of whose going to die and who isn t but every now and then the movie throws a surprise at you which is also fun i d been looking for a good goop film for a while and i d heard of this one about a year ago and thought i d check it out it finally showed up on amazon it s not a great film but there was a strong late 80s nostalgia factor and it was a diverting 75 minutes mr k i actually liked this movie although it did hit all of my deepest frustration buttons simply because of the nature of the plot crispin glover plays the hapless mr k a magician who moves into this freaky hotel to be closer to his gig location and then finds it nearly impossible to escape this is a very surreal movie and very frustrating to watch not because its bad but simply because the plot is designed to be that way one of my fun frustrations in a movie is when characters keep trying to tell other people something important but they just get ignored mr k first encounters strange people in his room under his bed in the hallways and most especially in the kitchen area where he gets roped into being a server and a chef one of my biggest issues in movies is watching people get caught up in circumstances they find impossible to avoid because of the assumptions of the people around them and because no one listens to them the people in the building are always making assumptions about him and then treating him as if he had confirmed those assumptions no matter how much he protests for example he ends up being grabbed up and taken to a dinner party while he is trying to find the missing exit at the end of the party while all the guests are running about trying to escape some type of emergency he gets swept into the kitchen working as one of its many many chefs the head chef assumes he wants his job and another chef gets mad at him for becoming the chef s daughter s new favorite none of which is true to add to this frustration level the building keeps getting smaller and smaller forcing people to move their furniture into the halls making everything feel even more claustrophobic there are strange veiny things living in the walls people are chasing him through the building and his room gets invaded by a mob of people through all of this mr k keeps trying to tell people who he actually is warn people about the building and the events occurring but no one is listening because they re all too busy assuming things the movie becomes more and more surreal until the building begins to crumble and k finally escapes through the body of some kind of marine animal the movie is frustrating to watch but still enjoyable largely on the strength of glover s performance as the much put upon mr k i did like the messaging of how he keeps trying to break away from the normalized apathy of the hotel denizens but when he tries he just keeps getting more and more entangled in their often petty shenanigans the most uncomfortable moment which might pull some people out of the movie is when the chef s daughter sexually assaults him in the supply room i had to pull back from that it was a relief to watch k escape all this though i didn t realize i was holding my breath until that moment the mandolorian and grogu i took myself to see this movie alone fun was had i had it in mind to see this anyway because i enjoyed the series so much and the bond between djarin and grogu is so frickin cute i went to a noon matinee which is what i call the geriatric hour so i fit right in it was just me old people and kids and it s also the first star wars movie i ve seen in the theater that wasn t about luke skywalker one of his friends or his legacy once again just like the others this is not a deep movie it s not trying to impart any social messages beyond what kids can handle and while the movie is suspenseful it s not very dark or gritty it s a good suspenseful action movie that is really cute and fun and seemingly perfect for little kids i remember when i first heard about this movie my first thought was is this even necessary and my answer is no it s completely unnecessary but i still had a lot of fun i smuggled in a drink and ate too much popcorn there are a lot of monster aliens in this movie and i loved that i did miss seeing any of hte other mandolorians from the series but i liked seeing sigourney weaver add yet another franchise to her long list of films and yes you did see the name of a famous director martin scorcese in the credits the plot is relatively simple to follow although i did roll my eyes at one point when i thought djarin might get bogged down in side quests in an attempt to fulfill his primary mission fortunately that didn t happen and there is one element of the plot that gets neatly turned on its head i still feel that the movie at almost two and a half hours was too long and there is a section in the middle that s all about grogu and i thought it was really fun to watch but it could have been cut without hurting the movie much as it is the movie feels like someone wrote a third season of hte show and then decided to smush that into a two hour movie but the movie makes an effort to show the two as being actual partners in their adventures with grogu pulling his weight by sometimes saving djarin acquiring some armor and even a cohort of tiny allies like himself i don t know if this is another star wars classic but it was a very fun two hours spent on a sunday afternoon share posting last week but in my defense there were hardly any new trailers last week and i was really sleepy quite frankly this week doesn t seem all that different so i will round out this post with a short list of which movies i will be taking myself to see this summer i intend to eat a lot of popcorn and get sick because that s just how i do it actually there were a number of trailers released this week but i wasn t especially interested in most of them here are trailers for movies shows that i m actually interested in seeing oh and sometimes i may forget if i ve already posted a trailer before so bear with me on this wildwood this looks awesome i m getting nostalgia for a past i never had just watching this i love this type of animation and i m happy to see that it s from the same crew that gave us coraline a children s movie that actually scared the bejeebus out of me everything seems quite normal and rather mundane at the beginning which makes it a lot more fun and perhaps a little jarring when the wolves show up yeah i don t know if i will go see this in the theater but i want to because it looks suspenseful and fun if i do i m going to invite at least one of my nieces stuart fails to save the universe i confess that i absolutely hated the big bang theory but only because sheldon was one of the most unlikeable characters ever written for television the first two or three seasons were okay but sheldon and his friends just became more and more insufferable over time and the show which already had its problems became unwatchable for me your mileage may vary that said i always did like some of the side characters like stuart and kripke who often showed up as sheldon s arch enemies for some reason and that s wat this spinoff movie is about i will not watch this in a theater but i will stream it at home i also have to confess that i actually liked the actor who played sheldon jim parsons who is just a gem of a person and i genuinely liked kelly cuoco she was a real firecracker and i found myself rooting for her relationship with leonard i know they wil lhave cameos here but the movie isn t about the two of them as far as i can tell the wolf and the lamb well this one should wet your appetite for werewolf movies before robert egger s big spectacle this winter which i am eagerly looking forward to i have a choice this december between dune 3 and the avengers and i m afraid to say it but i think i m going to choose dune 3 to see in the theater and watch avengers later but i m definitely going to see this in the theater because eggers has not steered me wrong yet and i try to prioritize horror movies i don t know how good this specific movie is it looks very b but i like ...
