in a reflecting pool this is a semicircular shawl using my favorite edging and the turkish cast 0n method i hate garter tabs i don t like the way they look turkish cast on is tricky but the results make it worth the trouble usually the stitches are knitted off the turkish cast on but in this instance they are purled there s a trick to it because you are knitting from a turkish cast on in the beginning you will be knitting in a u fashion down one side and up the other having to pull the needles in and out in a magic loop fashion however once you get about nine or ten rows you can straighten out the work onto one needle from that point it s easy tv knitting at its finest because i m using kfbs for my increases the edging works a little different the third stitch in from each edge is knitted on rs rows and purled on ws rows to give that two stitch stockinette row on the edging and i would place a stitch marker three stitches in from each edge to sequester those edging stitches but because of the way the kfb works there are only two stitches sequestered at the beginning of the rs row 1 and the kfb works as that third edging stitch on the ws rows in order for the edging to work right the kfb has to be offset to the second stitch before the marker to allow for the p1 that makes the edging look right trust me it works ripples in a reflecting pool materials yarn savannah squares triangular shawl the original savannah squares shawl was a square shawl folded on the diagonal some people may find wearing two layers too bulky so here s a triangular shawl that s half on the diagonal a savannah squares shawl it uses my favorite edging and a turkish cast on it s a bit tricky to start because of the turkish cast on but once you get it going it s very easy if i was using some other method of increases besides kfb i would have my edging separated off three stitches at the beginning of the row and three at the end of the row but because of how the kfb works what would have been the third stitch of the beginning edging needs to be a kfb to make the edging work right it s quirky i would put a different color marker there than the other two again because of the way the kfb increase works two kfb in a row produces this single stitch of stockinette running at right angles to the edge of the scarf right down the middle of the work this is a different yarn shawl purling a turkish cast on i hate garter tabs sorry not sorry i don t like the way they look i ve worked out a way to put my little edging seamlessly onto center out top down shawls using the turkish cast on i have a pattern for a semicircular shawl in here somewhere that uses a turkish cast on but instead of knitting the cast on stitches they are purled there s a little trick to that after you ve worked the first side and turned around to the other needle there s the slip knot pull off the slip knot like you re supposed to then pull the knot loose then loop the yarn tail back around the working yarn pull it under and through the loop and pull it gently taut this keeps that next stitch from coming undone when you try to work it then continue on purling the rest of the that edging for those who are interested a further word about the sl1 wyif k1 edging if anybody knows what this stitch is called please let me know if you are adding it to an existing pattern you will need to cast on four more stitches than the pattern calls for as the edging is worked over the first two and last two stitches of each row row here is an example of the edging on garter stitch front of work edge and back of work abbreviations sl1 slip one stitch purlwise from the left to the right needle without working it wyif with yarn in front of the work as if to purl at the beginning of the row keep the working yarn on the purl side front of the work slip the first stitch purlwise then move your yarn to the knit side back of the work and knit the next stitch proceed with the row as written in the pattern until two stitches remain with two stitches remaining move the working yarn to the front of the work slip one stitch purlwise move the yarn to the back of the work and knit the last stitch you are in essence wrapping the working yarn around the front of the slipped stitch i suspect this stitch might be a narrow version of an i cord edging that s the edging i used on both the neck or draped around the shoulders in shawl fashion it can be embellished as here with small tassels attached to each corner it can be knit in any size yarn using any size needles depending on the weight loft of fabric you want and how you intend to wear it a great stash buster project this pattern would also make a great baby afghan note one could make a number of small squares 8 x 8 in size for example and join them together like crocheted granny squares to make a blanket or afghan a great stash buster for those odd balls and left over partial skeins materials yarn version a 5
