l here in no particular order are some of the interesting new iterations of horror elevated progressive art house this isnt exactly a brand new form of horror and i m not entirely sure that i agree with the designation since horror has always been full of social messaging it just happens to be experiencing a resurgence today in the past it went by other names like art house international or avant garde and some of the directors of this particular style were david lynch david cronenberg and dario argento directors who still managed to get down and nasty with their content though this sub genre has reached a certain level of mainstream popularity in the last ten years from what used to be rather niche audiences who were basically what i refer to as professional horror fans to mainstream casual fans these kinds of movies tend to appeal to people who don t necessarily watch a lot of horror movies they generally avoid horror movies that are too obvious or movies with a lot of jump scares gore or slashers they like their horror to be quieter more subtle to say something a bit more than be scared right now a lot of these films have very specific social and or psychological themes like hereditary and the witch and some fans just like their horror with a bit of an emotional remove in films like children of men or the danish version of speak no evil while these fans are willing to sit through a certain amount of gore and violence that s not what attracts them to these films they are attracted by what they think the movie has to say it s sometimes called elevated horror because the characters take precedence intellectual depth is prioritized and there is usually some kind of complex social philosophical or existential theme that the creators want the viewers to dig around in the emphasis is often on mood and atmosphere and such films often have rather bleak endings where the monster hasn t been defeated or the status quo has not been restored because disruption of the status quo was never the point sometimes the movie isn t actually trying to scare the audience so much as get them to think about their fear and it is the message of the film that s supposed to be frightening not the gore or onscreen deaths although these types of movies don t always shy away from such things there is a strong emphasis on relationships and the kinds of horrors that can occur between family members friends and lovers which also feeds into the film s messaging movies like the hereditary and umma are about secrets and generational trauma within a family robert eggers the witch is the story of a young woman who is first ostracized by her community and then eventually by her family leading to the very thing she was being ostracized for the supernatural thriller talk to me features themes of familial grief suicide and addiction ari aster s midsommar is a story about the predation of cults on the emotionally vulnerable bong joon ho s parasite is about class consciousness and conflict and nobody knows what the hell is being said in robert egger s the lighthouse or ari aster s beau is afraid which are both rather avant garde where the goal of most conventional horror movies is just scaring or disgusting the viewer movies like these want to make you think about what scares you they feature the overturning of social conventions and relationships you have psychological movies about the stress of being a single parent like the babadook movies that tackle generational racism like get out and movies that question our adherence to social conventions like the danish speak no evil many international films can fall into this category too since they re not made by hollywood studios they have the freedom to tackle issues that hollywood won t watchlist the vvitch hereditary the lighthouse get out midsommer it follows creepypasta s creepypastas are types of stories made up over the internet that are sometimes touted to be true and feature cryptids urban legends conspiracy theories dangerous events made up monsters and haunted places most of these come from youtube 4chan and reddit there is a significant proportion of the internet that does nothing but tell each other scary stories all day sometimes these scary stories get a foothold in mainstream culture and we end up with new urban legends like siren head and the black eyed children and of course slenderman there have always been horror stories that were based on localized urban legends like the chupacabra mexico black shuck ireland the wendigo american midwest and the jersey devil american north east but now we have some relatively new ones to add like the appalachian not deer some of these have been gaining enough steam to come to the attention of hollywood writers and directors like the new backrooms film watch list smile dog slenderman siren head the rake the not deer subgenres rules creepypasta rules creepypasta is a subgenre featuring horror stories based on the supernatural consequences of rule breaking or following the primary plot consists of someone moving into working at or visiting various liminal spaces such as department stores parking garages hotels and motels gas stations semi abandoned malls and or hospitals the jobs are all distinctly working class and usually take place at night where an employee is given a set of rules by their employers managers or coworkers these rules are supposed to alleviate supernatural problems prevent future disasters survive through the night or imprison cosmic entities or some kind of eldritch horror and or sometimes the rule followers themselves this is my current obsession with some of my favorite channels being dr wicked lighthouse horror i try to avoid the ones that clearly feature ai voices there are a wide variety of stories to be told sometimes the rules get broken and all hell literally breaks loose sometimes not and it does anyway sometimes following various rules imprisons the follower or completes a ritual and sets something free or keeps some kind of contract in place some stories end bleakly but a lot of them end with the restoration of the status quo spirits laid to rest or sometimes just the salvation of whoever broke the rules dr wicked specialize in the darker end with ghosts and other supernatural creatures while lighthouse horror tends to be a bit more lighthearted and positive most of these stories last no more than an hour so these are great listening filler for when you re doing something around the house some of these are written stories from the r nosleep subreddit note try to avoid channels that are less than a year old but with hundreds of stories those tend to be ai driven and narrated and will often plagiarize other mistakes that happened within those technologies things that aren t possible with the smooth digital tech we use today analog horror often has a rough raw look with lots of staticky images voiceovers shaky cam blurriness slow burns jump scare images and explorations of liminal spaces there is often a first person or documentary feel to the videos as if they were documentaries on youtube these are often mini films 1 to 5 minutes long that last over several episodes and often tell stories of government corruption and coverups conspiracy theories and supernatural forces and monsters as in vita carnis and woodlands national park there are youtube channels entirely devoted to horror stories about old technologies and conspiracies that involve getting lost in dangerous alternate worlds like the backrooms or poolrooms films like skinamarink rely on a nostalgia for analog technologies objects and childhood environments like party centers and suburban homes to create feelings of disquiet and creepiness movies like the vhs franchise rely on first person handheld footage and personal narratives to create feelings of deep unease the movies and videos can be made with or without gore but horror of all the new genres the most popular seems to be horror based on liminal spaces which has always been around but is experiencing a resurgence based on just the existence of the space itself liminal space horror is a sub subgenre of analog horror and most of it is told through disturbing images with accompanying music a lot of liminal space horror contains no characters or dialogue although it occasionally shows monsters or rather entities the emphasis is on places and spaces that because they are empty of people also makes these spaces empty of purpose and it s that loneliness and lack of purpose that makes it so disturbing although invented by kane pixels who invented the backrooms in 2022 through a reddit channel my go to youtube channel for information on all things backrooms is broogli who covers all of the many many many levels of backrooms lore there is also the ongoing series of liminal horror titled tales from the gas station from jack townsend so if any of those are your appealing then you should definitely hit these up liminal horror is based mostly on youtube although there are several movies and book titles featuring the subject since so much of it is based on visuals there are also music videos essays and travel videos into liminal spaces like the poolrooms the playrooms and the youtube series lost in the hyperverse and even some games these are referred to as args alternate reality games many of these games and videos feature disturbing and twisted sounds and voices distorted faces monstrous creatures and strange music some of them are done in a found footage or simple black and white animated style and while i find some of them scary i find many of the music videos rather relaxing which i ve heard can sometimes be one of the side effects as well the major difference between basic analog horror and liminal horror is analog features events as well as narration while liminal horror relies almost entirely on mood and frightening us has had increasing levels of access to an horror films from overseas we have seen some of the best and most inventive horror coming from areas of the world where directors have simply not been told what audiences will and won t watch and hence don t know any better these filmmakers simply make what they love and it s interesting to see what other cultures think is scary based on their own mythologies and lore some of the best horror movies are coming out of asia from places like japan korea taiwan and indonesia many of these movies feature zombies and ghosts or are based on various local legends in movies like the supernatural themed ringu or the wailing from korea the zombie film train to busan and its animated prequel seoul station apparently no one told korea they couldn t make an animated zombie movie and the korean monster movie the host and there has also been a godzilla revival back to his more frightening roots in films like shin godzilla and godzilla minus zero some interesting films are coming out of latin america as well like the supernatural argentinian thriller when evil lurks motherhood themed movies like huesera and la llarona and the unique slasher film piggy from a female mexican director and the humor inflected vampire themed el conde from chile and likewise from ireland the boys from county hell france has always been a big deal in the horror film genre but more recent films include mads a drug trip gone bad raw cannibalistic sororities infested voracious spiders and titane surrealist car horror germany gets a little more down and gory with movies like overlord nazi zombies cuckoo combining science and folklore and blood red sky featuring motherhood and vampirism there are horror films from sweden let the right one in spain rec iran a girl walks home alone at night and under the shadow and denmark gets in on the horror game with the controversial speak no evil this is by no means a comprehensive look at international horror for that you would probably need to look up each country but let it not be said that there are no original films being made in fact that s a complaint i m more than tired of hearing the problem isn t that there are no original films being made they are being made every day all year long the issue is that the complainant s tastes are too small and they probably need to branch out from watching hollywood franchises notable the host when evil lurks train to busan ju on piggy el conde horror noire there are an increasing number of films centered around black american folklore myths and historical horror and many of them are worth the watch though not all of them are great the most famous of these new filmmakers is of course jordan peele us get out nope and now ryan coogler has thrown his hat into the arena with the vampire themed sinners the last 20 years has seen a little bit of an uptick in horror themed black led films where we often had nothing we get maybe two or three films a year which isn t too bad but could be better and occasionally a tv series like the watchmen or lovecraft company which never last beyond one season to be fair not all of these shows and movies are any good them some are a bit obscure good manners resurrection road and some of them are clearly cash grabs coasting on jordan peele s success them again but we need those kinds of movies too since every gamble could potentially become a win thereby producing many more such films and shows in the past year we got the sinners movie and a tv series called it welcome to derry which featured the backstory of dick halloran from the shining in the last twenty years i ve managed to watch all of the top dogs like jordan peele comedies like the blackening and attack the block dark and mysterious movies like his house and the candyman remake by black female director nia dacosta who seems to be making a name for herself since she is also the showrunner for it welcome to derry there was more tv too in the form of lovecraft country and interview with the vampire which featured a black gay vampire in turn of the century new orleans for the film to qualify as a black american film it has to have more than just a black lead character it helps if it deals with how the horror interacts with a black cast that is already dealing with the horro...
