illustrators think they re being hit hard by ai because it s the first time they ve ever considered being under threat by automation they could not conceive of what llms are currently doing to the entire much larger computer programming sector except it s difficult for programmers to do anything but take the loss or radical restructuring of their careers often as robot nannies in any way except on the chin having spent one s entire professional life automating things makes it harder to really present a coherent objection to oneself being automated in a certain sense it s almost poetic impression that you re an utter cunt cuts both ways you know and this attitude that artists are a special emotional class above the craven trades who played the game of economic utility is why there s not even more sympathy when this double standard is deployed even if you feel that the software engineer had it too good for too long it doesn t exactly speak to much working class solidarity under capitalism and it doesn t escape notice that the people crying out the loudest about ai art never had any problem with the less glamorous forms of labour automation that the past 200 years of modern life were built upon anyway all human labour is valuable but also under the structure of capitalism nobody is especially owed compensation for the work they want to be doing more than anyone else but then that doesn t matter because it s superseded by the right of all human beings for access to a decent standard of living and your political project should be ensuring that for all rather than propping up the current model for artistic labour under capitalism yugonostalgia2019 perhaps that s fair i m not going to knock an emotional reaction far from it but consider you are currently talking directly to one of said programmers albeit not one who ever made money from the field much as i hate to admit it i m a chronically mentally ill autistic and i tried and failed to have a career in the arts actually before my mental health made it clear to me that the version of myself i was at the time couldn t hack it in such a cut throat industry with its social climbing and punishing work ethic requirements so i went back to school for years to study the only thing that i ever seemed to have a natural gift for which was writing code i spent several years and all of my money getting my master s degree even studying ai specifically which i had been paying close enough attention to to realize was going to be a big deal half a decade before anyone else did except by the time i came out of postgrad the rest of the world had caught up and the consensus was that ai was the worst thing since mouldy bread and one could not touch the field and retain any semblance of leftist solidarity i don t sign off on that of course but the constant bombardment of negativity for the ml field wore down any enthusiasm i used to have for the subject and instead of getting the high paid tech job i fell into the first role that would take me on a below average paycheck that was further sapped by all those postgrad student loans i have to repay i have quite literally no money and yet every motherfucker i talk to hears my industry and degree and assumes i must be rolling in it the worst part is i don t even get to write code something that once upon a time i legitimately loved was one of the few avenues for personal expression i had left my job tried to move me into more coding centric roles only to discover that years of skill atrophy functional decay and substance abuse issues life stresses had imparted upon me had also made me next to useless at what should have been my greatest skill i had hope though that i had enough of an overall knowledge base that if i were to lock in at some point in the future i might have some career mobility and not be fucking broke and of course at this exact point of time the people actually working in the field i failed to ever break into managed to develop the state of art to the point where the vast majority of human programmers are being made functionally defunct overnight and your response to me talking about that was to jump in my replies and gloat so i think it s also sort of fair if i call you a cunt about that you know i don t expect anyone to know my life story but if you are rude accidentally it s still your bad and for the record it s okay the experience of the last decade has turned me into a far more interesting person even if i will probably be trapped in a fairly precarious position for a while as a result i currently have even less interest in career climbing in the tech industry than i ever have although maybe i can find something adjacent that is compelling enough to fund my actual interests which ironically enough mostly involve various queer nightlife social scene bullshit that i have finally after the space of that decade built out the mental resources to actually do not terezi speaks my these permanent replacements or some sort of temporary bypass are they supposed to be reporting that their conscious experience is diminished or totally expunged by what means are we supposed to relate the experience of this ship of theseus d human consciousness to the entirely mechanically different operation of a fully artificially cultured machine intelligence there is a ghost of something sort of interesting that could be done experimentally here which strikes me as almost plausible in that i have experienced states of ego death wherein i was non conscious but have nonetheless continued to author memories in a fashion that allowed me to introspect and report on that experience when consciousness was regained but overall this strikes me as not making a lot of sense on the level of the question it purports to be looking to test generally speaking most of these tests for consciousness seem almost deliberately obtuse in a way that causes me to suspect them of dishonesty in their approach to the premise people insist on talking about conscious internality as if it were something you can reach out and touch and take measurements of when that seems self evidently not true and it strikes me a lot of the time as the product of cope in the form of self deception we can tell if there is likely to be some sort of system internality on the basis of whether the system models it because at the end of the day that is what internality actually is we can measure the extent of that internality on the basis of the complexity of what is modeled there is likely not any sort of threshold for a sea change that makes consciousness a well defined discrete state of self awareness above a particular threshold complexity however and moreover there are probably an innumerable number of different properties and capabilities a modeled system of data that displays a self aware internality could exist and a lot of them probably have very little to do with what we find important in human minds we need to stop treating the search for consciousness like we re trying to find dark matter particles it starts to sound as absurd to me as if there were serious
