don t need everyone s love and approval what matters most is having a small circle of supportive and loving friends these are the people who know you they respect your boundaries celebrate your wins mental health self care humor is more than entertainment it s healing it can improve your memory make you more productive and connect with others compassionate helpers often carry tension in their upper back and shoulders a good laugh can loosen your shoulders clear your head and make the day feel a little lighter whether you work or live in a stressful environment or you re constantly supporting others laughter can be one of the simplest ways to reset your mood know your audience humor is subjective meaning what one person finds funny another may not a well intentioned joke may fall flat or offend someone some people enjoy silly jokes while others prefer a dry sense of humor at work sarcasm can help you get through a hectic day with your colleagues pay attention to how the people around you use humor notice what they laugh at and how they respond when you joke around humor works best when it brings people together not when it puts someone on the spot or puts them down when in doubt laugh at yourself this shows you don t take life too seriously and helps others relax around you sharing laughter with others humor can make conversations easier help people open up and create a sense of connection you can share a funny story send a meme or watch something silly together even playful activities such as games or lighthearted videos can bring people closer there are also more structured ways to bring laughter into your life such as laughter yoga which mixes breathing stretching and intentional laughter ways to bring more humor into your life laughing at your own mishaps watching a funny show or movie reading comics or memes keeping a few funny pictures or quotes nearby reading a humor book going to a comedy show whether you work or live in a stressful environment finding something to laugh about can help you reset your energy and feel more grounded humor doesn t erase stress but it makes the load a little lighter and sometimes that s exactly what you need take as good of care of yourself as you do others lisa hutchison lmhc is a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach she works for caring professionals who want to heal grief and january 29 2026 lisa hutchison lmhc psychology relationships boundaries coping skills mental health personal growth relationships self care selfboundaries selfcare you hear a lot about setting boundaries with other people but what about with yourself self boundaries aren t about restriction or self criticism they re about self respect the more you set and hold boundaries for yourself the more you develop self trust this is the foundation for a grounded and intentional life why it is necessary when you don t set boundaries with yourself you have no direction you say yes to everything you break promises to yourself and to others this leaves you feeling anxious frustrated guilty or out of control when you set clear limits with yourself you find that you protect your energy you now have space for what really matters in your life you stop living reactively and start living intentionally boundaries reduce uncertainty which decreases overwhelm in your life you know what to expect from yourself and others this creates less inner conflict stress and lowers any resentments what self boundaries look like self boundaries are not dramatic or rigid they re small consistent commitments to guide your behavior for example i schedule time for lunch i stop working at 6 30 p m even if i didn t finish everything i don t say yes on the spot i give myself time to think i move my body for 15 minutes a day no negotiations i check my calendar before committing to others i shut my phone off an hour before bedtime these boundaries aren t punishments they re anchors which help ground your energy how to start setting boundaries with yourself 1 identify your energy drains i suggest to my clients to assess their energy in the morning afternoon and evening on a scale from 1 10 when your energy dives down look at that section of your day what happened write about it in your i fill my cup journal 2 choose one small realistic boundary choose an action that resonates with you and is achievable an example is when i feel angry i will pause and breathe 3 write it down as i instruct my clients to write down their monthly moon and yearly intentions you can also write down your boundary intentions what do you want to focus on what is your line or edge of acceptable and unacceptable behavior 4 be compassionate with yourself expect resistance and your inner critic to rear its ugly head when you don t follow through with a boundary revisit it forgive yourself and begin again this is about progress not perfection it takes practice to get comfortable setting boundaries with others and ourselves concluding thoughts when you honor your own limits you feel empowered live with clarity and feel lighter you will find you are less reactive feel steadier and are more in control when you can rely upon yourself you stop waiting for permission to be who you are and you live take as good of care of yourself as you do others lisa hutchison lmhc is a licensed psychotherapist www lisahutchison net 15 comments the power of intentional alone time december 29 2025 lisa hutchison lmhc psychology spirituality boundaries coping skills empath life mental health mindfulness self care spirituality wellness artists writers and yogis often create times of intentional silence to listen to the voice within alone time isn t the absence of connection but rather a return to your own heart and soul set an intention to treat this powerful time as restorative and heal yourself it is in silence that we process and let go silence is not empty but full of information for those who listen it is where the whispers of spirit reach you intuition chimes in and synchronicity occurs how you can restore with alone time alone does not equal lonely alone time becomes restorative when you stop seeing it as missing something and start seeing it as a spiritual necessity when you sit in silence you gain personal growth clarity and a deeper understanding from spirit the irony is that when you intentionally spend more time with yourself you realize you are never truly alone make it a ritual rituals help bring you back to your spirit bring that same sacredness into your alone time it can be as easy as lighting a candle taking a few deep breaths or setting your own intention do nothing for 3 5 minutes sit and allow yourself to decompress take a few deep breaths stare out a window and let your muscles relax see where the moment takes you some activities to try when you are alone drinking tea slowly and mindfully taste each sip feel the temperature on your tongue and the warmth on your hands take a walk without your phone tune into nature and use your five senses what do you see hear touch smell and taste listen to music and draw you can doodle or create whatever comes to mind allow yourself to be in the moment write morning pages any time of the day morning pages act like a brain dump these aren t for publication but for processing write whatever comes to mind julia cameron discusses this practice in her books including the listening path the creative art of attention she recommends you write three pages by hand end with a closing gesture a small simple signal to your inner self helps close this time and re enter the outside world you can place your hand over your heart and thank yourself you can sound a bell chime or ring a gong repeat a mantra or take a few deep breaths after careful consideration i have re joined x but i have a new username hutchisonlmhc if you would like to follow me here i am https x com hutchisonlmhc take as good of care of yourself relationships boundaries coping skills guilt limitsetting manipulation mental health personal growth psychology relationships self care selfcare many compassionate people find it difficult to set or be consistent with their boundaries boundaries are limits telling others what is and what is not acceptable behavior for you if you are struggling with this know you are not alone there are many reasons why boundary setting does not come naturally which i will explore in this blog post givers helpers carers as a compassionate helper you want to care for others most of the time helping feels good there are those times when you are tired or burnout in which you have nothing more to give your energy reserves are out or you are running on fumes the culture of healthcare workers and givers promotes self sacrifice you naturally put others needs over your own out of habit you say yes even when you wish you had said no you skip lunch stay late or take that extra work assignment many of us want to be liked we are people pleasers it is also important to take as good care of yourself as you do others sometimes this means prioritizing your own needs you will need to learn how to get comfortable feeling uncomfortable this means not allowing feelings of guilt or fear to stop you from setting limits saying no is challenging but sometimes very necessary and the best way to help others remember setting limits is compassionate care it is not only good for yourself but also for others you lack practice another reason setting boundaries is challenging is that you haven t had a lot of practice doing so schools do not teach boundary setting imagine if they did some of us grew up in families where there were a lack of boundaries or too many boundaries knowing what a healthy boundary is can be tough it can help to ask a trusted friend or counselor if you are being too flexible or too rigid stress trauma the more stress burnout and trauma you carry the harder it is to be clear or consistent with boundaries when you are preoccupied with trauma your attention is not fully here stress burnout and trauma contribute to and cause mental emotional and physical fatigue it takes work and effort to set boundaries with some people especially the ones who emotionally trigger or challenge you what can you do increase your self care to feel stronger you need to feel good this includes getting adequate rest and doing activities you enjoy become aware of your energy needs record your energy levels throughout the day check out my book i fill my cup journal to help you in it you will find writing prompts and space to journal your thoughts you will also find suggestions for energy protection it includes a unique energy scale to rate your energy from 1 10 there are also ways to restore your well being treat stress trauma and burnout get counseling to treat trauma and burnout start a stress management program to restore and keep healthy energy levels practice mindfulness the use of mindfulness techniques helps you to become reflective rather than reactive this slowing down to present moment awareness also helps unhook you from any triggering material question yourself be mindful of when you take on extra responsibilities are you doing it to please others or be accepted do you have the extra time and energy to devote to this practice setting boundaries this can be done through journal writing talking with a friend or trusted counselor the more you practice the easier it is to do plus you will want to process any residual guilt or fear that comes up when setting limits another blog to read how to say no an essential guide to setting boundaries for helpers take as good of care of yourself as you do ...
