endless ouroboros of problematic characters discourse on tumblr and also the atrocious missing the point comments on that essay which is a long way of coming to the point which is that both the desire for simplistic good and evil cardboard cutout villains and also the current literary tendency to either write characters propelled solely by trauma or else defined by a vague liberal leftist moral worldview that is anchored solely in guilt are fundamentally dishonest creative desires by which i mean that both refuse to engage with some upsetting ideas the first that good kind caring people may commit great evil and believe that they are good or that they had no other choice the second that they do not actually feel all that guilty and all that they re doing is paying careless lipservice as one might sing a kyrie or recite a liturgical confession of one s sins both refuse to actually engage with the problem of evil or badness or of actual moral structures that undergird their world and their storyworld both refuse to speak the unspeakable the private spiteful small spirited unkind petty cruel awful thoughts that we don t articulate publicly because that would be de trop and invite ostracisation albeit in different ways its easier to pinpoint it amongst the first group but the second is also defined by an inherent selfishness that refuses to speak but which haunts the text a certain sense of smug safety and self assurance a sort of pulp_common_people mp3 vibe you could call your dad and stop it all to it but what is the point of any act of creation that refuses to engage with or express all of this the other side of this is the sort of dishonesty of giving every single bad person what we think of as a sympathetic explanation for why they re doing terrible things this has resonance when it s an acting out in personal relationships trauma does affect how we relate to each other after all but too frequently it becomes a cipher for anything more meaningful or any kind of meaningful engagement with a broader social world the moral world that brandon taylor writes abt in his essay and when it gets to the isms it becomes frankly grotesque we really do want to demonstrate the act of radicalization by means of trauma when more often than not it s merely random happenstance and being immersed in a social world that feeds a certain prejudice or pressures you to partake of a particular prejudice there s an unwillingness to engage with acts of evil or wrongness that are random as in lacking what we deem adequate causal explanation or irrational and what is rational and irrational are so ideologically shaped by our socio political milieus or with the bleak bureaucracy and alienation of the process by which good people commit acts of increasing evil this too is a dishonesty in its unwillingness to engage with the reality of what people are and are not capable of without the power of a backstory that renders them sympathetic or comprehensible according
