matter whether someone is born your child or not whether someone is born with evil in them or not the only thing you can control is what you can do thou mayest make choices to love them as they are and even if born with an evil nature they may make choices themselves too because whether born pure or evil that s something everyone has the ability to do to choose cathy in wonderland the decision to portray cathy unquestionably as a victim of sexual abuse as a child was a wise one because it is implied in the novel the novel states that cathy frames two boys for rape at 10 but the show changes it to a real assault a 5 now people are arguing about whether this is overriding steinbeck s misogyny without delving too much into that topic one need only to look at the main themes of the novel that choice matters and the fact that cathy is demonstrably not the original sin to realize that maybe the author did want people to question the narrator s words on cathy we are supposed to question whether the author s portrayal of a single character as anti theme is accurate whether or not this specific interpretation was steinbeck s intention is beside the point because it is thematically sound character wise sensical and psychologically realistic in real life if a child creates a false accusation it is almost always because they have been exposed to something very inappropriate and likely abused by someone else whether or not steinbeck knew this i don t know but again we re supposed to question cathy s belief that she was just born evil and has no choices but that this is a fairly reasonable interpretation as a result and i think zoe kazan did a fantastic job showing rather than telling us about cathy s abuse with that in mind let s discuss the scene of cathy s death cathy commits suicide in part because she realizes precisely that she was wrong about whether or not she had choices in life seeing aron someone pure to use cal s words who somehow came from her destroys her view of herself as someone without choices she then recounts alice in wonderland her abuse and her childhood self comes out of the fireplace to embrace her in a beautiful symbolic cementation to cathy that she was wrong she didn t have to be this way she had choices and this is treated as an embrace not as something to smack her over the head with and taunt for being wrong i genuinely think this is one of the kindest most humanizing portrayals of a bad victim who gets a bad ending i ve seen in fiction the other thing is that of course cathy s suicide isn t necessary which is why it s a tragedy aron is pure sure but he s also plenty human and flawed just like adam her stark childish beliefs that people are pure or evil are wrong but her inability to reconcile this destroys her other great decisions i appreciated the dual parallel scenes in cathy s relationships with faye and mr edwards she warns both i didn t want to drink you made me when they complain that they are scared after she drinks and her dark side emerges cathy hates drinking because she hates losing control and because she hates herself as much as she hates other people but also edwards and faye misunderstand that when you don t give someone a choice even with something that seems very basic and social politeness you are asking for darkness the director also did a great job with the cinematography even if there should have been more light lol the scenes are directed meaningfully such as the scene where young cal tells aron he heard their mom was actually alive aron calls him a liar and then they both crawl into a little hideaway a yonic symbol of returning to the womb to comfort one another lee s complexity in the novel was perfectly woven into the story he s played brilliantly by hoon lee who gives a weight and sincerity to the character that makes him come fully alive instead of just being the anchor of the trask family originally posted by nohardheroes as for the who fathered the twins question the point is that adam chooses to be their father they are his sons just as they are lee s and just as abra is lee s daughter because they choose to be also because they are descendants of everything in the trask family from cyrus s thieving and lying to the military expectations to the brotherly jealousy it doesn t matter if their blood is charles s or adam s the novel also invites the question about whether one is fathered by one brother and the other by the other now medically unlikely it s not impossible but the point is that this question raised by steinbeck invites us to question our own assumptions about how much of a person s life is determined by birth and how much by choices the casting also invites the question while subverting expectations cal s young actor strongly resembles young adam while aron s strongly resembles young charles usually people who theorize this theorize that cal is charles s and aron s adam s criticisms naturally i do have a few critiques none of these impacted the overall story though but are worth mentioning firstly the lighting secondly i think the story could have and should have done more with aron s and abra s characters in the book they re much more interesting than they were here abra telling cal that she s not good either would have been more meaningful with something shown instead of just told to us and have made her more of a character this didn t have to take up much time either aron suffered from much the same fate cast into the good twin role that made him far less compelling than he is in the books to its credit the adaptation did give complexity to him we see how he s buckling under the pressure of having to be the good one and we also see that he s capable of spite by running away to the army but i think that could have been explored better maybe another episode would have been needed to fit it in but i d have liked that lastly yes i know that timshel is actually noticed that on social media and within the helluva boss fandom a large segment tries to portray stolas as the worst thing about the show both as a person and as a character they argue that the show presents him as a poor victim when he s supposedly a valentino esque sexual predator simply because the old pilot depicted him as a narcissistic aristocrat only for the series to present him as someone whose past filled with emotional neglect led to an obsession with seeking romantic relationships without considering the consequences of his decisions they claim he s a terrible father despite the show telling you otherwise when the point is that his obsessions affect not only him but also octavia even though he genuinely loves her they also argue that he never learns develops or faces consequences for his actions when the series itself shows him recognizing his mistakes and trying to fix them like when he dealt with blitzo in the full moon episode unconsciously treating him like a toy asmodeus crystal and breaking the deal and that at the end of the second season she loses all her power and the love she had for him look the problem here isn t that they dislike the character
