pag e music gretchen welcome to lingthusiasm a podcast that s enthusiastic about linguistics i m gretchen mcculloch today we re getting enthusiastic about many ways people are fighting to reclaim their languages around the world with sophia smith galer who s a journalist and content creator whose work focuses on language technology and culture she s the author of how to kill a language she s based in london uk first our most recent bonus episode takes you behind the zines we ve been having fun making several different linguistics themed zines now we chat with our very own technical editor leah velleman about the work she s been doing with me behind the scenes to bring those lingthusiasm zines to life go to patreon com lingthusiasm to listen to this and over 100 bonus episodes and also to see and give comments on the next zines before anyone else music gretchen hi sophia welcome to lingthusiasm sophia hello thank you so much for having me gretchen thank you for being here before we get into your work and your book we re gonna start with a question we ask all of our guests which is how did you get interested in linguistics sophia i loved languages before i ever loved journalism it was the first thing that i studied i did spanish and arabic as my undergraduate degree and before that had spent my childhood and adolescence being fascinated by the languages that were available to me in my school that was spanish french and latin then at home i grew up listening to my mum and my nonna speak to each other in a glittering array of languages in the book we re about to discuss i quite naively thought that that was english and italian there in fact was another language hiding in there lying in wait for me i really had quite a rich linguistic soundscape growing up and then through all of my student experiences i went on to become an international news reporter my languages came in pretty handy but maybe not as often as you d think they would be in demand perhaps that s because i worked in a british newsroom where everyone s very focused on english gretchen there s a lot of reporting on things happening in other countries but interviewing people who speak english in those countries and things like that sophia exactly i can remember both i had two newsroom jobs one was at the bbc and the other was at vice news i can remember scenarios in both reporter roles where i found a story because i was the first english speaking journalist to identify it because i had been able to access it in the target language as it were gretchen that s really helpful sophia yeah really helpful i can remember instances where i was perhaps able to build rapport quite quickly with someone because i could tell we had a language in common it came in useful in sneaky surprising instances but it s not like day to day i had editors saying hey sophia we could use some of your language skills right now please that didn t happen as often as i had hoped it would i was always really interested in language but it became this tool in my wider skillset that was sometimes used sometimes under used i desperately tried to keep them going it was in 2019 when i became the first bbc journalist to use tiktok i was a video journalist at the time it was quite different for journalists to be using at that point i was one of the only ones in the uk never mind the only one at the bbc the only person really doing it properly was dave jorgenson at the washington post famously in the us gretchen i remember that guy sophia yeah i did it for a bit i basically kept going viral i kept getting into trouble for not doing anything naughty at the bbc because the bbc s just like that i kept being told to be careful with my tiktoks even though they were never breaking any guidelines eventually i got told please stop putting bbc journalism on there i thought okay well i can t put bbc journalism on there but that doesn t mean i can t tiktok full stop i started making language explainers because i loved languages they were my biggest hobby and passion i thought well okay if i can t talk about my work what else do i know about i started making video explainers about language and that s how i properly got into the sort of linguistics space gretchen you wrote a book called how to kill a language which i very much enjoyed reading let s do the little elevator pitch what is how to kill a language about in a nutshell sophia it s about language loss and erasure it s about a phenomenon called linguicide which might be a word listeners have not heard before if i achieve anything with this books it s to popularise it as a term gretchen linguicide referring to the death of a language sophia the suppression or erasure of a language it s my journey travelling around the world gaining an understanding of why languages seem to be disappearing at an unprecedented rate keep reading 3 weeks ago 9 notes share on facebook share on twitter share on pinterest share on google from the end credits about the process behind making the first four lingthusiasm zines we talk about how leah got into linguistics through lord of the rings and conlanging her pivot from phd fieldwork to technical editing and a very brief history of zines we also talk about why leah decided to go rogue with the formatting for her diminuitive zine about diminuitives where the meat clarinet comes from and comedic timing for most effectively offering people zines finally a sneak peek at some future zine topics we re working on and at our upcoming anniversary plans so you can start scheming with show notes pag e music gretchen welcome to lingthusiasm a podcast that s enthusiastic about linguistics i m gretchen mcculloch lauren i m lauren gawne today we re getting enthusiastic about irregularity and the consistent inconsistency of language but first we have new merch gretchen okay backstory we ve used the metaphor of a musical instrument several times when talking about how the human vocal tract is organised and how you can change the shape of your mouth as the air is on the way out which changes what the air sounds like which is true for both the mouth and a musical instrument lauren we ve used a couple of different musical instruments as metaphors the meat clarinet the meat bassoon the meat bagpipe gretchen but i just can t get that original imagery of the meat clarinet out of my head maybe it s because i played clarinet in high school who knows lauren has very generously allowed me to persuade her that what we really need in our lives is some art of the human vocal tract and a clarinet merged together in meat colours lauren to be clear you need this in your life this art is deeply cursed and i will not be buying any gretchen this art speaks to my soul our artist lucy maddox did an amazing job knocked it out of the park as usual lingthusiasm patrons can even see behind the scenes some stetches of the several horrifying meat textures that she offered us as we were coming up with this design lauren truly one of the most terrifying design briefs i have ever had to write gretchen go have a look at the meat clarinet available on all lingthusiasm social media and tell us if you love or hate it lauren as people have pointed out this is not actually an anato...
