devices like whether they re enjoyable characters is up to taste but whether they re good writing requires critical assessment this is a rather long post so here is a summary learning how to critique villains is a great way to identify skilled and passionate storytellers they embody the ideas and decisions that the writer feels are incorrect while some narrative devices are more subtle local politics unfolding in the background color or song cues scene settings etc villains are dramatic that is a person designed to be wrong they intentionally draw the audience s focus for important steps of the story when a writer stumbles on that it reflects poorly on the entire work precisely because of that focus this post is going to get into the following key components of an effective villain they highlight the wrong conclusion about a key issue in the story they should be a symptom of either a larger issue in the narrative or the one they fixate on they don t need to be evil and in many cases that label is a hindrance as the average age of the target audience and or the length of the story increases villains should be more frequently correct in their beliefs and choices they evoke strong emotion appropriate to the genre they don t need to be antagonists and antagonists don t need to be villains they raise the stakes the world will become worse if they are left unchecked their strengths and weaknesses should be directly tied either to the central theme of the story or their opponent s character arc their ending is consistent with the theme of the story if included a villain redemption arc must have 4 components 1 an external stimulus causing 2 a choice to deviate from their plan and 3 a corresponding shift in their worldview and those result in 4 action that matches the strength of their new conviction they should not be included in a story if any of the above causes distraction or discordance with the main plot line of course there s spoilers to follow so reader reveal from cooldown vaelus is not spec ing into any healing class with her training with julien they re gonna slowly replace her paladin abilities with fighter abilities but because the normal way to multiclass would be limiting here they re gonna do it top down so her 5th level paladin abilities get replaced with 5th level fighter then 4th with 4th and so on down but whenever they hit 6th she can still take that as fighter as normal and what this does is maintain some of the fighting skills she already has like extra attack but it s gonna take her more training to access the very basic fighter abilities which might set some things off balance but once it clicks it clicks your turn to role but yeah kattigan is the only proper healer now prev tags now this is um a little worrying i won t lie i guess everyone better stock up on their healing potions via falconscry if it helps while i do find it funny to joke about kattigan being their only healer when rangers aren t full casters this isn t quite as terrifying a prospect as i make it sound and this combat was a good illustration of why this team is one that s well built for being able to survive without healers thanks to either their various abilities or just their massive hit point pool or both looking at you julien the only two people here i wouldn t affectionately describe as a fucking tank are occtis and bolaire and they re pretty good at not getting hit occtis was the only person who even really hit bloodied in this combat technically thimble s at exactly half health but she s fine she s got stuff to handle that and that s because he was specifically trying to get across the battlefield which put him out in the open that s not occtis modus operandi in most fights he plays to his strengths backing up as far as possible from the enemies and putting like 5 minions between them and him he was hurt after the obrimus manor fight sure but the majority of that damage was self inflicted in the three different encounters he was part of there he took one enemy hit total and when he does get hit shield takes care of half the problems and his various ways to pull life force from his surroundings take care of the other he s the only of the og seekers and i believe other than bolaire the only one here who s never dropped to 0hp so far this campaign bolaire is the good luck asshole im behind 5 alter egos build he manipulates enemies to not even recognise him as a threat if he can t do that he manipulates them to fight each other instead of him if he can t do that he gets out of there if he can t do that well he doesn t need this body he can only die if someone specifically targets the mask and only termina really knows to do that which is why he s losing his shit about that one bc real death is on the table for the first time bolaire and temporarily vaelus are also the only ones in this party that don t have a way to heal themselves kattigan has healing spells occtis has his life steals fighters have it innately though vaelus will probably have to count back down to 1st level before she gets it and thimble has a feat for it kattigan didn t even need to cast any healing in this fight all he cast of that nature was spare the dying a cantrip and while hawthorn s heals were impressive julien was only 10 points down and vaelus only 11 those numbers barely make a dent in their massive hp totals the enemies made like 8 attacks on occtis and only got three of them through the captain got one big attack on thimble and everything else done to the party this fight was easily negatable pocket change i still absolutely agree with occtis that they shouldn t try to fight any more tachonis this early but as long as we re not dealing with like level 15 sorcerers they ve got this handled
