my life it s been generally fun and occasionally cathartic to share pix from the past and type out the stuff running through my noggin and as ever i m grateful to any and all who stop by regularly the first part of what i ve come up with for my ninth blogiversary is plenty silly we re starting off with nine pieces of useless chart trivia from the only year ending with a 9 during the classic casey era putting the songs on the 7 21 79 at40 under the microscope song at 9 gold a vital remnant from the uncredited stevie nicks backup vocal era between rumours and tusk side note you likely knew but somehow i didn t realize until the other day all of the second singles and none of the first or third singles from the five mac studio albums between fleetwood mac and tango in the night were stevie compositions songs that would peak at 9 you can t change that mama can t buy you love song that advanced nine positions good times that tune with the enormously influential bassline jumped from 13 to 4 in just its third week on the show it would take four more weeks to best bad girls songs with nine letters in their title good times do it or die my sharona in this issue billboard listed streisand accents of mie and kei as they phonetically sing about a guy they think is leading them on the song would inch up to 37 in two weeks before it quickly tumbled off the chart i remembered there was an ill fated variety show they co hosted with jeff altman that aired some time later turns out it was in march of 1980 and maybe i tuned in briefly to an episode i m seeing now that then nbc head exec fred silverman came up the idea for the show which clocks given other nbc disasters of the period if you clicked the ultimate70s link above you would have seen there was an episode of supertrain airing on 7 21 79 i don t wish to knock kiss in the dark too much though i appreciated the novelty of the act at the time and am grateful to hear it again when those three mid summer at40 s are re aired changing tacks our family summer vacation in 1973 when i was nine as it happens was to florida our final destination being the magic kingdom at walt disney world then less than two years old one side trip on the way down was stopping off at ocala and taking a glass bottomed boat tour at silver springs i m pretty certain that our hotel was adjacent to wdw and we were able to ride a monorail directly from it to the park while i m sure amy and i did many of the normal theme park things my chief memory of the trip is of not feeling all that well battling some nausea and lack of appetite until after returning home i don t have a solid feel for the dates we were gone but mid july would be a reasonable guess ordinarily i d share a picture or two i believe there s one where sis and i are being greeted by donald and maybe mickey but i m not home currently in florida once again instead my sister who s lived near orlando for more than two decades is facing a significant health challenge masquerade bows in at 31 but it s the trio of songs debuting on the show above that you should be dancing don t go breaking my heart and let em in at 25 23 and 22 respectively that wowed a certain 12 year old in just his second month of chart keeping there was a bunch of interesting stuff happening in the lower depths of the hot 100 though let s check some of it out 93 the real thing you to me are everything kicking things off with quite the find as this had just wrapped up a three week run at the top of the uk charts it wouldn t reach higher than 64 here but its performance was likely undercut by competition from a couple other versions of the song one by broadway a disco act from chicago is right behind this at 94 and another from nyc group revelation would chart briefly two weeks later having listened to all three i can definitively say the real thing s take was indeed the real thing they had other top 10 hits in their native britain but never made noise in the u s again 92 the deadly nightshade mary hartman mary hartman theme with the recent passing of louise lasser i couldn t resist including this it s pretty thin disco but it does bring to mind the superior disco lucy that would be a hit the following spring it s starting on a four week journey that would end at 79 what s truly surprising is that the deadly nightshade was actually a folk country outfit wikipedia pointed out to me their appearances on sesame street here s one of those also from 1976 that i found plenty charming 78 maxine nightingale gotta be the one i fell for right back where we started from on first listen fifty years on i m just learning about this follow up and am left wondering why u s stations didn t pick up on it it s really really good made 12 in australia but despite being this week s highest hot 100 new entry could only reach 53 here 74 bellamy brothers hell cat i ve come to lump the bellamys together in my head with nightingale since both times each hit the top 40 spring 76 summer 79 the other was charting as well so it s obvious to me to next highlight howard and david s follow up single to let your love flow it helps that hell cat is a pretty good tune though just four spots from its peak country stardom was just around the bend 68 the tubes don t touch me there i did not know that for much of their pre the completion backward principle career the tubes counted a female vocalist re styles among their members i m picking up a distinct bat out of hell vibe from don t touch me there and as it turns out bat producer todd rundgren would run the board for one of the tubes later albums this was their first pop singles chart appearance and the only one before don t want to wait anymore soon to peak at 61 65 lee oskar blt from the war harmonica player s self with a zip polaroid camera in my hand and a transistor radio in my pocket this is the second trip we ve made today from our home in walton to erlanger we would have attended church with my grandparents in the morning we came back of course for the city s bicentennial parade and have camped out with many others on the steps of the erlanger baptist church my grandmother will soon be riding by on one of its floats while we wait for festivities to begin i snap a picture of my sister amy sitting right in front of my papaw who might be chewing on one of his ubiquitous ibold cigars
