under an hour before we took a break for lunch if you ever see that alvaro is reaching in your city or if you can attend a travel workshop with him you won t regret it it s high level teaching that really gets you thinking about how you paint i m so grateful that i had a chance to learn with him olana near and far posted september 5 2026 author shari blaukopf filed under uncategorized 4 comments the best viewpoint to draw olana historic home and property of frederic church is from below that was what we did last year when i brought my workshop group there and that is what we did again last week the house is situated on the highest point of land on the 250 acre site and when you approach from the parking area you only see parts of the house but walk down a slight incline to a flat plateau turn around and you get a view of the historic home and museum in all its persian inspired glory it s especially beautiful on a clear day when the morning sun lights the fanciful brickwork and decorative tiling last year we visited in september when the the mingled garden was past its prime but this year there were still lots of flowers to in bloom if you are a fan of frederic church this year is the 200th anniversary of his birth here s a full list of upcoming events and exhibitions look left look right posted august 31 2026 author shari blaukopf filed under uncategorized tags boat sketches greenville arms hudson river valley hudson river valley art workshops ink sketches 6 comments when i m teaching on location i often try to arrive a day early to find painting locations for my group for my workshop at hudson river valley art workshops last week i was really happy to discover the hudson river waterfront park in hudson ny it has big trees for shade restrooms coffee nearby and of course some great views look left and you can see a tugboat and some industrial barges look right and you ll see the schooner apollonia we had a beautiful morning to sketch the tugboat but by early afternoon there were some dark clouds in the distance i thought i could get in another quick demo of the schooner in before the rain but it was upon us before i had time to pack up my sky wash was still wet when the precipitation went from a light mist to a deluge the water splats are giant raindrops that fell on my still wet page and the rest of the scene was painted in studio after a full change of clothing and a warm cup of tea it took two days for my knapsack to dry out the hudson river valley is full of great painting spots besides the river scenes there are rolling hills mountain vistas interesting small towns and tons of history the greenville arms inn is a welcoming and cozy place to stay and we have ample studio space in case of bad weather i can t promise that it won t rain but i can attest that the food is delicious and the dinner conversations with other sketchers are always lively i ll be back there next august if you are interested in coming along seven days in alsace posted august 21 2026 author shari blaukopf filed under uncategorized tags alsace travel sketchbook travel sketching watercolour sketches 18 comments i ve finally found a bit of time to scan all the sketchbook pages from my july teaching trip in alsace and yes my trusty scanner is back at work thanks to a new adaptor cord despite several trips to strasbourg over the past decade a good friend lives there i had never had the opportunity to explore the alsatian villages along la route des vins well let me tell you it s an extraordinary area vineyards as far as the eye can see and as if created just for sketchers these vineyards are often steeply banked so they form a dramatic backdrop to nearly every village we visited our visit coincided with la fête nationale bastille day the biggest holiday on the french calendar sadly though it was too dangerously dry for the traditional fireworks but folks were having fun anyway in the village of riquewihr above they were busily packing up tables and chairs from last night s party with their timbered houses and cobbled streets each village we visited in alsace vied with its neighbour for charm and grace in bergheim we sketched a backlit street scene and reflections in windows when we d had our fill of half timbered houses we turned to gardens and to families of giant storks whose nests adorn many chimney tops throughout alsace one day we ventured to the ecomusée d alsace which offers a wealth of old buildings and artefacts from rural life all of them ideal sketching subjects in fact when it rained in the afternoon and we had to take shelter in some of the historic buildings including a blacksmith s and a pharmacy we just kept on sketching in the shelter of the museum gift shop i did an ink drawing of this little stone building and the lush flower pots in front and added colour later i was lucky to visit the village of ribeauvillé twice once with the group from the rhine cruise and once with my alsace group the spread above combines two demos from different days i started with the fountain and window on the right and then extended the panorama with a row of houses the following week of course it was absolutely necessary to add grapevines to our sketchbooks alongside little stone and buildings and a belfry my favourite view see below was from the vineyards high above the town you get a real sense of the hilly landscape in alsace where so much land is given over to growing grapes on our final days in alsace we took a day trip to strasbourg where we sat along the canal and drew the large timbered houses of la petite france as it turns out you can get an awful lot of sketching in when you do it every day for a week i think we captured pretty much everything the near and far homes steeples and shops birds and plants quite of few villagers and lots and lots of history the only thing is missing is the food but i am not really a food sketcher i d rather eat what s in front of me than let it get cold as always my heartfelt thanks to french escapade for taking us to such great places and of course to the wonderful students in the group we had so much fun together didn t we water soluble ink experiments posted august 17 2026 author shari blaukopf filed under uncategorized tags boathouses hudson ink and watercolour 11 comments i appreciate having time at home to experiment with materials for the past week or two i ve been drawing with an assortment of red and yellow inks and then adding watercolour to them this is a follow up to the echinacea that i painted last week on thursday i met my friend susanne strater for a sketching session at greenwood centre in hudson she worked in pastel and i drew with my lamy pen that was filled with ancient copper ink if you happen to be in hudson greenwood is a very welcoming place to sketch and the hydrangeas are at their peak right now on the weekend we visited friends at their camp in the northern adirondacks my favourite time of day to sketch when we visit is in the early morning when the water is very calm the only company i have then besides alice is the loons the ducks and the occasional high flying eagle i used noodler s apache sunset ink now called southwest sunset and dip pen for this drawing and added watercolour on top of that this morning i was back in hudson sitting on a bench and drawing a view of main road i used a stabilo point 88 fineliner in sanguine for my initial drawing it s a water based ink but it releases less pigment than the two previous inks august echinacea posted august 10 2026 author shari blaukopf filed under uncategorized tags bouquet echinacea ink and watercolour 20 comments like everything else that i ve done this summer i m a little late in getting out to paint in my garden that s why in this week s bouquet the blooms are all a little past their prime but that makes them so much more interesting to paint i get droopy petals curled leaves and darks where there should be brights my drawing was done with water soluble ink and watercolour was added on top of that here s another bouquet that i painted the same way before the rain posted august 6 2026 author shari blaukopf filed under uncategorized tags boats plein air watercolour pointe claire yacht club 7 comments i got an early start at the breakwater today in an attempt to beat the heat the morning started off hot and sunny i set up on the shady side of my car but then a heavy humid air mass rolled in the sky darkened and the air was still my washes started off quite light but as the humidity descended my painting darkened too not long after i finished the sky opened up but by that time i was back in my car painted on a quarter sheet of saunders cp 140lb paper august breakwater posted august 4 2026 author shari blaukopf filed under uncategorized tags boat painting plein air watercolour pointe claire yacht club 3 comments i m a little late for the start of boat painting season but better late than never i ve painted this view of the pointe claire yacht club countless times but it never gets old i have my spot under a tree in a beautiful park in the good company of picnickers dog walkers cyclists and the odd pedestrian who looks over my shoulder for a time on a warm summer day i can think of no better place to paint i did have my plein air easel with me but ended up painting this quarter sheet on my lap because a lever was missing from my tripod making it impossible to attach the tray that holds my paper but it didn t matter there was nothing that was going to stop me from painting my favourite summer scene painted on a quarter sheet of arches rough paper 140 lb the view from my studio posted august 3 2026 author shari blaukopf filed under uncategorized tags hydrangeas still life watercolour window sill 18 comments we ve had a lot of rain over the past two days so much that my hydrangeas are flopping over and blocking the view from my studio window it was my intention to paint the old bottles on the window sill today but when i saw the hydrangeas i thought i would incorporate them into my painting it was a bit of an odd experiment because usually things outside the window are further away and often lighter in value or at least treated with a lighter range of values to separate inside and outside but in this case they were right up against the glass so i incorporated lots of darks painted on a quarter sheet of saunders waterford cp 140 lb using a limited palette of burnt sienna quinacridone gold payne s grey and carbazole violet and a bit of titanium white at the very end for highlights zinnias posted july 31 2026 author shari blaukopf filed under uncategorized tags bouquet flowers watercolour zinnias 27 comments my favourite thing this summer season is going to the u pick garden when i collect my weekly csa farmer basket at ferme tournesol this year the zinnias have been terrific such a variety of different shapes and bright colours for me to paint for this summer bouquet i used a palette that i have filled with bright holbein reds pinks and oranges that were just right for this bouquet i am still waiting for my scanner cable but it should arrive tonight one of the things i like about scanned watercolours is that i don t pick up the paper texture like i do with a photo but for now this will suffice painted on
