of curiosity what do you think sets vegeta apart from other popular shounen characters who have a similar character arc to his characters of the similar archetype personally i admit i m very biased i don t think they all reach his level hahaa shannonsketches i definitely did when i was younger i haven t read much new stuff in quite a long time but i was a shounen jump kid back in the day and i think aside from vegeta both being the blueprint and breaking the mold for the rival archetypes that followed i think the biggest differences are again in the manga a lot of shounen series are about teenagers and vegeta behaves like an adult so he learns from his mistakes and grows from them without as much resistance as other characters tend to have vegeta spends most of the series as an antihero and it s even his idea to team up with the others because he s a strategic professional and not an insecure teenager because of toriyama s more improvisational writing style he wasn t prone to the pitfall of stretching out the rivalry for plot reasons vegeta s antagonism is extremely organic as is his change of heart because toriyama s writing style was very organic vegeta s reasons for being a rival are very specific and can be resolved and have been twice now in the first half he s fighting the propaganda he s absorbed in the second half he s just trying to be enough on his own as he s grown into his new life competing becomes less important where other rival characters in shounen tend to get stuck antagonizing the lead as a personality trait and whether that s in their manga or just anime adaptation like toei geets is beyond my knowledge because dragon ball is a comedy at its core vegeta is allowed a lot more flexibility in his role than other writers give their vegeta types and because toriyama s goku is a wonderful problematic protagonist instead of being the rival the more time vegeta spends with him the more his dynamic with goku shifts into being the adult vegeta has to reduce himself to being childish to behave like a shounen rival toward goku now and can be shamed for prioritizing it because these men are in their 40s 50s and it s a comedy at heart vegeta ports tend to be younger and behave more like toeigeets so in my experience it s usually an insecurity based rivalry being dragged out for the sake of creating or building drama because the writer doesn t have anything for the characters to do in the story if that problem gets solved tldr they re not on vegeta s level because vegeta wasn t made to be a rival most vegeta ports are developed to be the rival character and it s so much a part of their character they can t be divorced from it without it impacting the dynamic of the story goku was already established as a slutty little rival collector before vegeta got here so whether or not vegeta was actively pursuing goku doesn t matter to goku s story vegeta was supposed to die and be dead and toriyama had to figure out what to do with a smart and determined antagonist stuck in this story where he can t be an antagonist anymore which created a novel writing challenge for toriyama and gave vegeta space and room to
