journalist ben chu whose analysis was insightful accessible and refreshingly honest about the scale of the challenges facing the uk economy some of the key themes were sobering growth remains persistently weak inflationary pressures continue driven in part by energy costs real wages are failing to keep pace with rising prices household disposable income is projected to fall by the end of the decade average household incomes may be only marginally higher than before the pandemic representing an unprecedented period of stagnation for many families ben chu brought clarity to complex issues around productivity regional growth energy security welfare reform and devolution while challenging some of the assumptions that often dominate public debate but as i listened i was struck by what was largely missing from the conversation economic growth matters fiscal responsibility matters productivity matters yet budgets should ultimately be judged by their impact on people for those of us working in health and social justice the measure of success is not simply gdp growth but whether people can afford to heat their homes access healthcare when they need it put food on the table care for their families and live with dignity rising poverty widening health inequalities growing pressure on unpaid carers record demand on health services and barriers to accessing care all carry healthcare and economic insecurity reinforce one another a healthy society is not just an outcome of prosperity it is a prerequisite for it a truly long term economic strategy should view investment this post the news moved on from colombia we haven t on 10 august a 7 4 magnitude earthquake struck western colombia homes and infrastructure were destroyed and for many people reaching a doctor became impossible two months later roads remain cut off communities are isolated and medical specialists are scarce our emergency response team has been deployed to buenaventura as of 1 september it had carried out 2 193 primary healthcare consultations 778 mental health consultations and 364 sexual and reproductive health consultations as well as psychological first aid workshops underserved
