to communities long excluded from decision making spaces i came to seattle to build a better toolkit for systems change and i landed at the university of washington where i gained masters degrees in public health and public administration at uw i led the campus sustainability fund a student run grant making organization committed to climate justice and dove into issues affecting washingtonians like wealth inequality a regressive tax structure worker protections housing and protecting communities on the front line of the climate crisis throughout my life in seattle the 37th became my political and cultural home a center of gravity for my organizing now i m running to shift power back to my neighbors in the beautiful 37th the cultural heart and soul of washington state learn more helped build it i ve been part of pivotal wins like the virginia medicaid expansion campaign in 2019 i helped implement landmark policy like washington s heal act as a co chair for the washington state environmental justice council i ve tested out ways to challenge the status quo of what genuine democracy looks like through building out tools like community assemblies at the people s economy lab now i m bringing what i ve learned and what i ve worked on to the state legislature to build a government that works for the people not those with the most wealth time or political influence world and we ask ourselves these questions how do we actually go about and make change there needs to be strong pathways where we see that change happen o what are they getting wrong in olympia where they re collecting more revenue from the everyday person but safety nets as disappearing t what we re getting wrong is we re collecting revenue from the everyday person our state budget is incredibly over leveraged over 51 of the money that our state pulls in each year that we rely on to support all these public services comes from excise taxes aka taxes that we pay every single time that we exchange money for a good or a service fundamentally that s wrong a new vision for washington with simon okelo it shouldn t be too much to ask that the person who serves you lives with you and they re here for you all the time they shouldn t be hard to reach i should be around constantly asking how i can serve you when you are approaching those questions of what does it mean to actually create justice what does social justice mean what does it mean when our communities are literally living shorter lives because these systems are not investing in us because we can t access i think for me the desire to fight is that we keep having these medium solutions and we keep putting band aids on things that really need transformative change we need people that are courageous and willing to stand up
