penn station in the 1960s now i gotta know from the expert posts in which i ve discussed the tragedy of penn station 1 2 3 i ve talked about penn station before but this is a good opportunity to do a real big post on the matter so here we go there s going to be some backstory required for this so bear with me before penn station was built the pennsylvania railroad s eastern terminus was at exchange place in jersey city new jersey travelers going to new york city had to then take a ferry to manhattan this wasn t exactly ideal but it worked out well enough except that the prr s main rival the new york central had a station smack dab in manhattan in 1869 cornelius vanderbilt started construction on grand central depot which was later expanded into grand central station 1900 eventually this structure would be replaced by grand central terminal in 1913 but the point is that the nyc had a station right in the heart of manhattan and the prr didn t and that had to change pronto their first idea was to build a rail bridge across the hudson river and set up a station at the end of it but the state of new york insisted this would have to be a joint project with other railroads in new jersey and there were no takers eventually the prr decided to tunnel underneath the hudson river in 1901 the prr noticed a station in paris that switched to electric locomotives for the approach into the city this approach became crucial after numerous accidents and issues finally convinced the city of new york to ban steam locomotives entirely in manhattan in 1908 the president of the prr in 1901 alexander cassatt yes mary cassatt s brother led the push to use the ideas seen in paris and unfortunately died four years before penn station was finished in 1910 he never saw the building he worked so hard for cassatt had picked the architect charles mckim of the famed architecture firm mckim mead white for the job in 1902 and mckim delivered in grand style the station was considered completed on august 29 1910 and it began seeing trains and passengers with a soft opening a few weeks later now both the prr and the long island railroad which the prr controlled had direct passage into manhattan penn station looked like this back then all photos from wikipedia before things were completely electrified the prr used a station called manhattan transfer to switch passengers from trains pulled by steam locomotives to electric ones but as the northeast corridor was fully electrified this became obsolete manhattan transfer only remained open from 1910 1937 eventually the prr had electrified the entire route from new york penn station to washington d c and as of the late 1930s this route was run by my favorite electric locomotives the gg1s which continued to work into the early 1980s because they were just that good anyway penn station had a good run as the most beautiful building in new york as it welcomed in passengers skyscrapers began to rise and manhattan continued to evolve into the center of culture it is today the prr and the new york central continued to duke it out especially with their crack passenger trains the new york central s 20th century limited between grand central and chicago and the prr s broadway limited between penn station and chicago but after world war ii and especially in the 1950s as more people could afford cars and air travel began to become a more viable option the railways began to decline both the prr and the new york central were hurting and ultimately the prr made the decision to sell the air rights above penn station first optioning them to real estate developer william zeckendorf in 1954 and eventually quietly selling them in 1960 to irving m felt who in 1962 announced that penn station would be demolished and the current madison square garden would be built in its place architects and historical preservationists understandably freaked out and there were numerous protests but ultimately penn station was demolished starting in 1963 with only a few vestiges of the old building remaining underneath its tombstone madison square garden the prr and new york central eventually merged in 1968 into an eldritch abomination called penn central which only lasted a few years before going bankrupt the two most notable giants of railroading in new york city were both dead with only grand central terminal remaining as a reminder of what once was we almost lost grand central too we got lucky the preservationists won that fight led by jackie kennedy onassis herself but it was a close call and it didn t bring penn station back they ve tried recently to give us back what we lost they recently opened moynihan train hall in the old post office building across the street also designed by mckim mead white but it isn t even close to what we once had and after all we re now stuck with this in the main penn station concourse they re renovating it now but it won t make up for the lack of natural light that penn station once had the remains of penn station can be found in a few places the statues from the outside made it to various museums and botanical gardens the rubble from the building itself rests somewhere in the meadowlands in new jersey i ve never found it despite researching and looking the death of penn station kickstarted the historical preservation movement in new york city but the cost was great i hope someday to hold a piece of it in my hands a building stolen from me before i was even born replies secrfidr i like trains penn station new york penn station sad
