thatcher family happenings skip to main skip to sidebar thatcher family happenings a little of everything in our crazy lives monday november 24 2008 nice quiet weekend we don t get too many of these in the thatcher home lately and this one was heartily earned friday we went to barnes noble and enjoyed some hot chocolate in the starbucks while reading our favorite selections robert is on a japanese manga kick carissa chose a funny cartoon book and i sat reading a series i call the silk series it s very good it s set in the 15 1600 s during the time of the reformation and it focuses on france in particular it is written by a christian author and so has a higher standard when it comes to being rated for adults etc it is very clean and respectable this series especially focuses on the huguenots who were the french equivalent of the protestants in england most of the characters are fictionalized but the main players are not the rebellions and political happenings of the time are also not fictionalized reading this series and other books about the reigns of bloody mary and her successor queen elizabeth i has given me a deepened appreciation of the people who gave their lives for their right to own a bible in their own language which at the time was a sin punishable by death say what you want about lutherans and calvinists and the other original protestant religions but their founders i believe were lead by a higher power to fight the status quo to fight and gain light and understanding about their spiritual practices i m grateful for their commitment to following the dictates of their collective consciences it is due in large part to them that i have a bible in english and so many gave their lives for that right burned at the stake guillotined tortured until they died it was a brutal time for those who dissented from the catholic church may we not take for granted this blessing i know i have at least a dozen copies of the book of mormon and more than that of the bible in our home most in english some in spanish i look at them now with a new sense of wonder all this reading has helped me understand one of our articles of faith so much more the eleventh article of faith is as follows we claim the privilege of worshipping almighty god according to the dictates of our own conscience and allow all men the same privilege let them worship how where or what they may i never knew or comprehended how many died to give us that right and it started way before the pilgrims began coming to america okay off the soapbox or history box whatever you want to call it we picked up teddy from the groomer at lunch time today and he s so cute ready for our thanksgiving trip day after tomorrow i ll try and take pics so i can post them i used to carry around that camera like it was a third arm now i have to try and remember where i had it last so pictures don t always get taken when they should be posted by thatcher family at 1 30 pm 2 comments monday november 17 2008 busy times well as usual we ve been very busy we had our sacrament program on the 9th which entailed lots of practice and work the weeks before things are only now starting to settle down a little this past weekend was busy too carissa had a carnival at school on friday it sure was a lot of fun and robert had a game night for band members at davis lucky he got to play wii and playstation and dance dance revolution etc dan went to davis with robert and i went to dodd with carissa fun was had by all then saturday we woke up early to go to a jazz piano festival that robert competed in he got the highest score he could plus he was the only boy here s video of it this week there s a little less on our schedule thank goodness and then next week is thanksgiving can t wait to have a break from everything posted by thatcher family at 9 21 am 1 comment friday october 17 2008 another busy week last night was robert s first band concert it was a mini one really they called it teach your parent to play night and let me just say that i can see a future as a band director for robert here are a couple of fun videos from that and then after we see the lovely carissa getting recognized at dinobeat today she was recognized last week too for a honor roll today she was recognized for being an awesome student inside and out always being the first one to follow the teacher s directions and thinking outside the box there s video of that too but for some reason the sound didn t come through real great maybe it had something to do with how far away we were maybe now i have to tell you two things carissa did this week 1 she took a great mayonaise jar that is kind of aquarium shaped she put some pink crystal looking plastic rocks in the bottom then she made a snake out of ribbon by braiding three pieces together for the head and tail she used construction paper and hot glue to keep it all together the snake was laid at the bottom of the tiny aquarium she tied a cute little tag around the snake s neck saying to mrs williams the best teacher ever she took it to school yesterday and gave it to her teacher who declared adorable 2 carissa was given a sewing kit for her birthday in june in august she was missing her friend carlee and decided to sew her a bear i wish now i had taken a picture of it she delivered that to carlee today finally carlee called it so cute okay video posted by thatcher family at 9 14 am no comments tuesday october 14 2008 saturday doings we had a busy saturday carissa and i got up and made cookies for abby s birthday abby is dan s youngest sister she turns 20 this week and is attending university at unt in denton we had lunch with her and dan s mom and dad and other sister diana who lives here in wylie lunch was good good food and laughs everyone being their silly selves robert did a fabulous job at his recital he played the entertainer and cinnamon popcorn he was quite the little musician afterwards we visited a few costume places to look at things for halloween man i couldn t believe the prices they want to charge for something you ll wear one night but it was fun to look here are a few pics from front to back carissa abby robert and diana father and son robert and his beloved beethoven toulous favorite place to be on someone this time it was carissa proof that one of the cats doesn t hate teddy though you better than nothing and all i can manage at the moment robert wearing our primary chicken hat carissa at lunch at school with a good friend and neighbor my sweet puppy teddy bear sitting on the end of the master bed wondering what in the world i m doing our sweet kitties having their love nap on the couch in the piano room well they woke up when we came in but before we opened the door they were asleep they re brothers from the same mother and everything i don t think they ll ever be able to be separated they ve been together since conception posted by thatcher family at 10 18 am 2 comments update i know i know 4 months and a day no less so sorry i m going to try to do better at this i have started a personal health blog separately and since i m there updating regularly i m just goint to have to come over here too let s see it s been crazy since june dan has a new position at garland isd and the initial time committment was killer now he s settled into a routine and all seems well there he was called as the sunday school president about a month ago and i think he s looking forward to a break this weekend general conference he s been having a fun time giving us tennis lessons on monday nights and taking robert into boy scouts every wednesday that gives him time with his best friend who is the scout leader plus time with robert robert and carissa started school i ll post pictures of that soon robert turned 11 on august 29th he is in band now in addition to piano lessons with laurie knight he loves all of his teachers and wakes happy and excited to go to school everyday he is also into animating very into it he carries a sketchbook with him nearly everywhere he goes oh the other thing he s yoyo happy he bought a really snazzy yoyo with his own money and that seems to be going everywhere too he earned his arrow of light and we had a nice ceremoney out at the anderson s place he s graduated out of cub scouts and into the boy scouts he s getting so big only 7 more years and he ll be out of high school and on to college and finishing up preparations for his mission it s funny the feelings you get excitement at the prospects yet sadness that the time goes by so quickly carissa is 8 and was baptized by her daddy in june she has started taking some gymnastics lessons and is thoroughly enjoying activity days at martha bakers house she s doing well in school and her teacher describes her as a dream she has a hamster named buddy she changed names so many times i hope that s the current one she plays with our teddy and loves to go to the park down the street and around the corner she wakes and showers on her own nearly everyday now which for her is a big fete i ve babied her so much it s sort of nice and yet not to see her growing up and maturing so much me oh i m still trying to get my health issues straightened out i ve got a new doctor and i ll see him on monday to review lab results but that s all boring and you ll have to read my health log to get more details haha like you really want them i m busy with primary busy with pta busy with kids busy with home busy with friends i m so grateful i ve learned to take 20 30 minutes spinning out of control this month carissa turns 8 on friday and has her party on saturday she chose a webkinz theme we ll be working on the cake later this week then her baptism is on the 21st she had her interview with the bishop yesterday and he came out of his office saying she s so ready she s excited to start attending activity day twice a month then the last week of the month will be
