a book is born discussions about literary publishing a book is born search primary menu skip to content blog about my work search for uncategorized what is the difference between the ma the mfa and the ph d in creative writing may 29 2014 masdendl leave a comment while all of these degrees have the advantage of giving you time to write only two of them are considered terminal the ph d and the mfa terminal does not mean cancer by the way it just sounds like it instead a terminal degree is the highest academic degree you can earn in any area of study so why are there two terminal degrees in creative writing i m not exactly sure but i do know that this is likely because the cw ph d is somewhat new to the scene and that since the mfa is still considered terminal it works to an mfa student s advantage as that student could teach at the university level and still be considered to have terminal degree status think of the ph d as extra credit which sometimes helps because as a side note it is likely becoming more common for universities to higher tenure track professors who have the ph d as opposed to just the mfa but many other factors go into hiring and i ll have a whole blog post about that later these three degrees emphasize shifts in creative writing in general while the ma typically a two year program was later trumped by the mfa a three year program the ph d is a newer more labor intensive and academic degree typically five years at least from my understanding sometimes i dream about getting a ph d but that dream typically lasts about six minutes i tell interested students what kind professors once told me the mfa is likely your best bet to start if you want to go to graduate school if you go for an ma you still won t have the terminal degree and may end up spending five total years in school anyway the larger purpose for graduate school in the creative arts is of course having that precious time to write however aspiring writers should also think of this time as a way to consider their future career paths if teaching is something you are interested in the mfa can provide you a terminal degree and likely some teaching experience in fact i would not go unless a teaching stipend is offered to you lit mags should i pay to submit to lit mags may 27 2014 masdendl leave a comment if you ve been submitting to literary magazines for ten plus years you ve probably noticed a lot of changes some that work to the writer s advantage and others that don t the majority of literary magazines now accept online simultaneously submitted stories and poems a good thing gone are the days of giant manila envelopes and sases that was a true pain in the ass if you ask me but spending that kind of time submitting did mean you had to be pretty serious about getting your work in the editor s hands however now many magazines are requesting what likely would have been unthinkable years ago asking for your money as a reading fee if you re at all like me as soon as money enters part of an interaction you re out the door that being said let us take a minute to think about what would happen if magazines often staffed by unpaid interns were to get an even larger increase in submissions like in an everybody and their brother now wants published at colorado review and can do so in just a few clicks now your precious short story or poem is competing with more writers and interns and editors who are notoriously overworked anyway i don t know about you but i d be willing to pay a little bit not much more than 3 bucks but close to what i might pay printing and sending off my work to assure an editor that yes i m serious about getting into your magazine and i understand literary magazine publishing well enough to know 1 you aren t a millionaire scamming me and 2 most submitters aren t even subscribers to magazines so ya i d put aside a few bucks each month for submission fees and you know what often when i m getting queasy about paying to submit i realize something likely more important anyway if i m not willing to give someone a few dollars to look at my work maybe they shouldn t be looking at my work right now anyway search for recent posts what is the difference between the ma the mfa and the ph d in creative writing should i pay to submit to lit mags recent comments archives may 2014 categories lit mags uncategorized meta create account log in entries feed comments feed wordpress com discussions about literary publishing recent posts what is the difference between the ma the mfa and the ph d in creative writing should i pay to submit to lit mags categories categories select category lit mags uncategorized blog at wordpress com subscribe subscribed a book is born sign me up already have a wordpress com account log in now privacy a book is born subscribe subscribed sign up log in report this content view site in reader manage subscriptions collapse this bar design a site like this with wordpress com get started
