take it tw suicidal thoughts with no intended follow through kinda played comedically when stanley s radio starts spitting out garbled shrieking on a random day he d decided was a wednesday just because it felt like on his honest first thought was if this thing breaks i m killing myself it surprised him to be frank stanley pines was a lot of things a skinflint a penny pincher a criminal a decade s long drifter and now the world s first and most unknown stranded astronaut he thought he was in space anyway and either way he definitely wasn t on earth so it counted but he wasn t the kind of guy who thought about killing himself he didn t know why he wasn t convinced that there was any strong reason that he was any more strong willed or spirited than other people hell he had a ton of good reasons to want to die it was just that for as much as shit sucked pretty much all the time forever sometimes there were some pretty okay moments tucked in there he ate some food that was decent he found ten bucks on the sidewalk there was a nice looking lady at the bar who didn t mind his advances and those pretty okay moments were good enough for him to keep living and hoping for some damn good moments to come it was a bit harder to find the pretty okay moments on an alien planet that his brother had accidentally kicked him over to that he was totally never going to get off of but he still didn t think about killing himself too much stanley was alright with the idea of something here with him killing him if it came down to that but he d still fight it the whole way down stanley was just the sort of man that wanted to survive better or worse high or low he had the strange excitement and dread of trying all the animals and fruits and veggies on this alien planet and hoping they didn t poison him to death he had the childish glee of being on a real ass alien planet he had the curiosity at what the hell else lived out here he had the radio which was also a recorder that he d been logging all of his experiences on a recorder that he could admit to himself had become an emotional crutch out here because sure he definitely was going to stay stranded on this planet until something here killed him but at least he could imagine someone else finding the recordings later and living on as a sick adventurer in the history books ha it has always been stanford s dream to be in history books not his so maybe it made sense that the recorder radio breaking would be his last fucking straw he wouldn t know until it for sure turned out to be broken stanley sat there in the lean to he d constructed at the base of a huge tree and watched and listened to the recorder radio very carefully which was hard considering that the shrieking noises were really really damn annoying but he listened anyway then in between all the static he heard an accented female voice say fjord huh no idea what to make of that the radio spat out a round of fjord fjord that somehow managed to sound annoyed despite being a mash of different vaguely monotone voices and then after a second s static screeching it tried again ford six miss you sixer stanley choked taking a moment to process that and wonder if the weird giant rat creature he d recently eaten was making him hallucinate are you talking to me through the fucking radio six six miss you stanley holy shit never mind stanley was never going to kill himself this was the best day ever kill yourself what ah he d said that out loud probably should ve known that would happen he spent all day talking out loud to himself now i just said i m not going to kill myself sixer pay attention he said not funny the radio blared stanley laughed long and loud and edged with hysteria what else could a person do in such a circumstance well aside from not kill themself aroace get out of my face answered aaaaaaaaaaa anon im so sorry i didn t see this this is wonderful and heartbreaking o w stan s just he s been through a lot more than that theres a level of hopelessness that comes with having no one else there except polly so its like total social isolation humans are social creatures they need this kind of connection or they go go up there i m gettin better about it though as long as i don t look down stan scoots back up against the desk reaching down to grab something from a drawer the zero g helps too and the glasses turns out we don t have the same prescription amazing what bein able to see the ground will do for ya when he pulls his arm back up he has a fabric pencil pouch he zips it open and dumps the contents out on the desk just in the camera s range of view the first thing he picks up is a solid case in which he removes the mentioned glasses and sets them on his face they re simple square shaped and thick black frames they suit him well turns out you re far sighted and i m really near sighted xplains a lot and look i even got an official badge and shit he lifts up two items from the pile the first being a velcro nametag with s pines and assistant engineer laminated on the front the second is a lanyard with an id card slipped into the cover the photo on the card is the same as the one in his file stan fixes the nametag onto his uniform just above the chest pocket feels like i m gettin my driver s license all over again i m actually doin somethin important for once ya know seriously we re out here goin further than any person ever stan fidgets with the lanyard and begins to gently spin his seat around he tilts his head back and stares at the ceiling while he spins here i thought it was cool we just got to the moon and i guess that was all just to keep us occupied i m i m actually out here in space crazy huh the chair squeaked when he does a full 360 it needs to be oiled launch was a few weeks ago was kinda tempted to reach out to all of you but i dunno figured you were busy or just wouldn t wanna come we ll be outta the solar system in 12 days into the unknown we re goin way faster than the other nasa ships and we just passed saturn guess we used it s gravitational field to slingshot around it it was pretty cool he stops spinning and gasps suddenly excited bro there s this huge window near the front of the ship that we can visit and there s so many stars i thought we saw a ton in jersey but there s absolutely no light pollution out here we can see everything there s no space between clusters i can barely see the constellations in them all i wish i could show you but i can t drag my computer there and i think i m supposed to keep this kinda short ish i dunno not my problem i ll just remake it if i have to he stands up voice quieting as he rushes over to the side of the room where a small shelving unit is stuck to the wall anyway i really like the crew especially my team the lead s a professional pretty sure he used to be in the army but he s cool once he s off the job i m the youngest outta everyone on the ship so i think he sees me as a kid still which is annoying but i ll survive he grabs a picture and returns to the desk he holds it up to the camera showing a group of 26 people in front of a massive engine stanley is positioned towards the right and he points at the two people standing next to him shay and berkeley are awesome they re the people i talk to the most shay s a grad student so she s got all the know how down and kinda hovers around me when i m doing checks berkeley s like me they just nabbed him from a car shop down in texas stan gets back up to return the picture to it s place then positions himself in the middle of the frame and look i get my own room it s a little bland couldn t bring too much or risk throwin off the weight limit of the ship but i got one the bed s welded to the ground to keep it from being thrown around when we gotta shut off the artificial gravity and the desk can be tied down to the wall the shelves even have a flexible glass door that keeps stuff mostly in place he reaches over and pulls a tab on the side of the shelves wrapping a segmented glass panel across it and clipping it into place on the other side tadaaa that s the future right there six and i at least got a couple posters above my bed you might like these more than the ones i had back home look i got a constellation map and one of apollo 11 ya know the guys that touched down on the moon recently we watched that live it s still a pretty big deal even though we got these huge ships going into deep space smaller ships have a higher risk of something going wrong and having to jam pack everything and perfect a landing was pretty damn important our landing gear isn t perfect either but it s only really made for landing back on earth anything we come across that we wanna explore we got a few drones that we can send down while we orbit stan moves across the room and takes one off the wall to bring it into frame and look i drew this one had to learn a ton about the solar system and planets and way too much math but this is jupiter fixed up a few things when we passed it but i think i did pretty alright did you know this big red dot here is a massive storm it s just goin there for years it s as wide as the earth crazy to think about ain t it he walks off screen presumably to replace the picture against the wall his hand comes briefly back into frame pointing towards the last poster that one s of the ship i m on the aurora it s mandatory for all the bedrooms for some reason but it s pretty cool he bounds over to it still pointing and right now i ammm there right there that s my room and that s where i work in the engines they power everything on the ship including and especially these giant rockets on the back keeps us moving so yeah i d say my job s pretty damn important heh wish you could see me now heheh heh his eyes go distant for a moment before he clears his throat he makes his way back to the desk sitting down again all joy gone uh before i run outta time i i wanna i m sorry i m sorry ford i i didn t mean to break it and it was workin when i left but i should a woke you up anyway i know it don t change much and i ll tell ya in person when i get back just i wanted to make sure you know there s a lotta things i should ve done differently and i can t take back what i did i hope you found somewhere else that d make ya happy or those scouters got their heads outta their asses and gave ya a second chance i hope you re doin well for yourself i m sure you are there s no way you d let some idiot like me mess up your life permanently and hey i can t mess it up anymore so there s that stan inhales shakily swallowing and clearing his throat again whatever you end up doin wherever you end up goin i know you re gonna do great things and i m proud of ya no matter what i ll always be proud of ya so that s it i think i ll i ll see ya on the other side sixer stan lifts his hand and presses it to the side of the screen covering half of his room he smiles warmly as his other hand reaches forward and the recording ends thousands of lightyears away and 3 years too late stanford presses his hand to the screen and sobs as he presses replay he mutters apologies and pleads for stanley to
