have definitely not wasted it my sewing corner has been a hive of activity i had been wanting for a long time to make another giant dahlia in reproduction fabrics using michelle yeo s templates kathy is going to make one too in very different fabrics and will likely start any day now i was thinking that the way i was procrastinating she would have hers all sewn up before i even started this was enough to prompt me to get going on the project thanks kathy it is nice to have a sewing buddy to keep you on track so on wednesday i got it cut out last night i started sewing and i will continue working on it today what fun posted by desley at 11 05 email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest labels piecing friday 25 november 2011 a collingwood quilt i am making a collingwood quilt for my nephew a few months back a customer brought me a great collingwood quilt and i asked her where she got the fabric emblem for the top she said it was from a doona cover that she bought online so i ordered one for myself i chopped up the doona cover and this is what i have made i am also working on another black and white quilt but this is a coincidence and this is not a collingwood quilt i have a black white and red striped fabric which i think i will use as the binding just so i have added another colour in the mix i think i might quilt feathers along the grey strips this is a present for my sister and i know she likes feathers posted by desley at 05 27 email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest labels piecing monday 2 may 2011 family news this is what my lounge room looks like when my nephew comes to visit actually this is tidier than usual because i have an ice cream container full of fabric scraps which he likes to scatter all over the room over the weekend i cut and laid out a little lap quilt for him his bed quilt is too big to drag around and i want him to have something smaller for when he is watching tv he helped me pick the fabrics for it and he understands that i am making it for him i am using those nifty numbers again thanks janette posted by desley at 23 18 email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest labels family piecing sunday 24 april 2011 nifty numbers i had time for a little bit of sewing on one of the projects i am working on yesterday i finally got the sashing finished and decided to put them all up on my design wall last night i had been complaining for a while that every time i lay out the blocks for a quilt and get them just right when i pick them up to sew them i manage to mess up the order and one or two end up in the wrong spot well early this year jeanette surprised me with these nifty numbers that she had made laminated and cut out so last night i used them for the first time i decided to place the number in the top corner of each block to ensure i put the piece back in the exact same spot and with the right orientation they are working really well yesterday morning we visited my niece and nephew paul is like the pied piper of kids and mila and asher like to climb all over him in this photo they were playing circus acrobats posted by desley at 08 23 email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest labels piecing sunday 13 march 2011 a new project i made the first block for a new project this weekend i showed it to my husband paul and he told me that i needed to mitre the corners of the outer square unfortunately he is right i was just being lazy paul knew nothing about quilting before i met him four years ago maybe i have taught him too well for example we were having a disagreement once because he didn t like the way i had my pc set up he is in it he said that to him it looked unattractive like mctavishing with cross hatching over the top i first drafted this block several years back it is eight inches so the pieces are quite small i really liked the original eight inch block but then i think i added too much that it lost some of it s impact so i always planned to make it again this was the final quilt posted by desley at 10 14 email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest labels piecing quilt projects sunday 6 march 2011 this weekend this is what i continued working on over the weekend i am making it as a gift so these are not really the colours that i would normally choose to work with because of this i am finding it a bit of a challenge but i am just starting to think it will turn out ok i think the person i am making it for will like it so that is what matters i originally had three inch sashing around the centre blocks so the dark blue was one inch thick this overwhelmed the star blocks so a lot of unpicking later i trimmed the dark blue on either side of the light blue back to half an inch to make two inch sashing and it looked a lot more balanced it still needs an outer border and i was thinking of a piano key border in both red and blue by the way the quilt was photgraphed on a red patterned rug and the light blue border is the current edge of the quilt although the rug doesn t look too bad as a border posted by desley at 09 13
