you the same thing your sex scenes are the weakest point of your story he s not wrong but what i should be thinking about is how do i use the sex to advance the plot all scenes whether in a movie tv show or a book need to advance the plot this has been drilled into me for years because the reader can sense even if they don t know when someone is just filling time until they reach the next plot point it doesn t mean every scene has to be action or drama intense but it has to help you tell the story take for example in one of my favorite tv shows of all time blake s 7 in the episode bounty the eponymous blake is trying to convince the guest star to come with him the guest refuses however blake is on the run from the guards so while he s trying to explain why coming with him is important he says wait here a moment please and walks off looking for potential attackers the scene goes quiet the guest star puts on the music and says forlorn where would i go nothing happens for a good 15 seconds but that significant pause tells you more about the character and his situation than another page of dialogue ever would in my current story i have a scene where my protagonist goes to the doctor s office okay pretty boring all told unless it advances the plot so naturally she goes there because 1 the doctor is a love interest 2 it allows me to talk about a complication that she has and 3 it allows him to offer a possible solution to the complication awesome mission accomplished that s where my editor points out you see that s great and there was no sex at all groan so i m struggling with when does the sex scene really advance the plot i had to start a completely different novel because i realized that although my original outline had lots of excuse for sleeping around all of it didn t really help the plot my protagonist was just getting f d for no reason eventually even my character realized it as they started checking out as i started writing their dialogue when your own characters tell you to fix your writing you know you re on the wrong track so i m struggling to figure out how to keep my juicy scenes in without boring my reader to death if you want to read a book
