how humor saved my life how humor saved my life musings on growing up monday december 03 2012 the four letter prayer those of you who know me or are an acquaintance probably know that my mouth is not that of an angel i may at times be confused with a sailor especially when an emphatic four letter word can really add a punch to an entertaining story other days when life gets hard i can t find the eloquent prayers that flow out of my mouth when my life is on cruise control all i want to do is stand in a field and scream profanities until i m out of breath or lose my voice or both i can only imagine the relief that would come from that moment to be quite honest the past few months have felt as though i ve been driving in the daytona 500 and i d really like an effin break there s been an emptiness a feeling that something is barren and really as much as i go to church learn from my catechism class seek out online prayer groups rent religious library books or take time for myself sometimes i just wanna kneel down call up god and say fuck it real loud multiple times in an open field turns out i m not the only one i d like to share this lovely post from an awesome jesuit blog i it never hurts to be thankful i ll continue to update daily this month so this month here are the 4 things i m grateful for 1 situations that make me wait i actually hate these but they help me grow a lot so many good things in my life have come from waiting so today i m thankful for waiting waiting to see good friends and talk for afternoons on end waiting for the crisp fall air to come and the continued wait for things i really desire 2 chocolate chips and pumpkin preferably in a cookie format do you need an explanation for this eat one there s your explanation 3 a meaningful job i don t think that any job is perfect in fact that would probably be pretty boring at times my job can be stressful and frustrating but there are spontaneous moments that remind me of why i do it like when the little guy who complains every day about going to therapy stops in my doorway at the end of a session to give me the biggest hug he can muster that s pretty neat 4 my husband he s a pretty neat seasons has helped me realize mostly by force of nature that i need to allow my life to slow down it s been a pretty busy past 3 years filled with wonderful highs and some pretty dulling lows and now it s time to slow down and trust in god trust in the slow work of god above all trust in the slow work of god we are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay we should like to skip the intermediate stages we are impatient of being on the way to something unknown something new and yet it is the law of all progress that it is made by passing through some stages of instability and that it may take a very long time and so i think it is with you your ideas mature gradually let them grow let them shape themselves without undue haste don t try to force them on as though you could be today what time that is to say grace and circumstances acting on your own good will will make of you tomorrow only god could say what this new spirit gradually forming within you alicia at 6 34 pm no comments tuesday august 14 2012 i voted and i am catholic and jesuit i recently attended a union sponsored class on behavior management techniques although my masters education was rigorous to say the least it did not include techniques on how to manage classroom behavior or studies that reported the causes of those behaviors mostly this class reaffirmed why i work in a low income title i district because i want to help advocate for and learn from our poor i am not judging those who work in more affluent districts if anything the past 2 years have taught me that teaching is a difficult profession that is underpaid and most of the time very under appreciated compound those 2 truths with parents who have bad educational experiences or are struggling to meet the needs of basic daily lives and you meet professionals who are inspirational and steadfast they learn to speak up for themselves and the families they serve because if they don t chances are no one will at the introduction to this course we began with the necessary ice breaker activity except this time it was a bit different we were asked to write poems with lines starting with i am from here s mine i am from the desert phoenix arizona i am from an awesome mom and dad i am from optimism i am from a husband and a crazy dog i am from running and swimming i am from speech pathology i am bilingual i am from the jesuits a few people in the group including our islam practicing instructor recognized the jesuit comment they knew even though they were not catholic that jesuit meant catholic and it meant that i had a devotion to social justice issues that one label expressed so much about me which is why i am proud to be jesuit and i am particularly proud of this letter from our catholic bishops my friends birth control is not the only issue that affects innocent lives social programs support the most vulnerable of our society and it is our duty as christians to support those people and those programs deuteronomy 15 10 11 you shall give to him freely and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him because for this the lord your god will bless you in all your work and in all that
