illustrious brands here in the uk most average wine drinkers will never have heard of the langton s list and it is difficult to obtain a copy trust me i have tried nonetheless paying a little bit more for a good brand other than the inexpensive bulk shipped jug wine that is bottled here in the uk and labelled with a fanciful name which may include words like bob s hill ranch block rise creek plot bin station etc is really worth the effort don t get me wrong many of the australian wines that arrive at these shores are reliable fruity medium bodied drinks my main criticism is that as their usual price point remains firmly within the inexpensive category and their rich almost soupy style can often be taken to represent the best of oz which is a travesty so i beseech anyone who is keen to experience a finer australian wine experience to look in the 15 25 price mark for that special occasion or birthday anniversary etc to see what they are missing then when their lottery numbers come up find someone who stocks anything in the langton s exceptional list they ll soon see what i mean leave a comment august 21 2023 spanish whites undoubtedly and unsurprisingly the first name that comes to most people s minds when thinking about wines from spain is rioja and a red rioja at that sadly with only a couple of exceptions the white wines of spain are largely undiscovered and subsequently under appreciated currently apart from sparkling cava from the catalan region of north eastern spain and the increasingly popular albarinho from the galician region of rías baixas in the north west of the country few average wine drinkers could name many if any other different spanish white wines taking those two favourites first cava made from a blend of three native grapes xarel lo macabeo and parellada is the traditional sparkling wine of spain which until the 1970 s was rather confusingly called champana but then it considerately changed this to avoid legal challenges from france s protected champagne classification cava can be made into both white and rose wines and may range from a bone dry brut nature to a sweet dolc style although most cava is sold as standard dry brut it is made in the traditional champagne method and is usually nv a blend of vintages a superior premium category of cava de paraje calificado was introduced in 2015 secondly and becoming increasingly popular in the uk is a northern spanish white wine made from the albariño grape which rather confusingly is named alvarinho in neighbouring portugal the wine has a delightful combination of high acidity a hint of saline citrus fruit flavours and a long dry finish grown on the granite soils of rías baixas a minerality can be detected on the aroma of the wine along with notes of fresh lime and nectarine so following those two which other spanish white wines are waiting for their time to shine another interesting galician white is valdeorras made from the godello grape there is more than a passing resemblance to chardonnay in these largely unheralded wines with the best examples reminiscent of a white burgundian style there is an apple like acidity and a heavier creamy finish on the palate valdeorras can be enjoyed when quite young but the finer examples can be aged in the bottle for up to ten years in the best vintages i cannot write about spanish whites without mentioning rioja blanco which sits firmly under the enormous shadow of its illustrious red namesake another age worthy white wine hailing from the la rioja region obviously it is made from the viura grape which may be known as macabeo in some other regions a few years ago a young rioja blanco would have had a very astringent flavour profile somewhat likened to licking mahogany furniture happily this has been toned down albeit the wine does retain an incredible complexity once again with the acidity and body of a chardonnay style wine similar to its red namesake it is often barrel aged and sold in three categories of quality from the young crianza style through the longer aged reserve and gran reserva examples these latter grades are quality wines indeed on a lighter fresher livelier note comes the star white wine of the rueda region in the river duero valley here the verdejo grape makes a very good effort of tempting sauvignon blanc lovers away from their favourite tipple with a lemon zest citrussy mouthful of pleasing acidity and crisp fruit if a verdejo from more mature older vines can be found an extra degree of complexity can shine through to equal some of the best sauvignons that new zealand has to offer a more recent evolution amongst the white wines of spain is the emergence of the palomino fino grape as a still table wine for generations somewhat buried and hardly ever mentioned under the mantle of being the sherry grape palomino has become one of spain s newest innovations whilst this new idea may well have been the result of the continual decline in the darker varieties of sherry sales more and more vineyard acreage is now being managed with a dry white wine harvest in mind strangely enough still palomino wines were made as long ago as the 1800 s in andalusia but never made the breakthrough into the global wine arena other than in the dry sherries of jerez in the cataluña region the best example of a white wine is derived from the garnacha blanca grape a mutation of the red wine grape garnacha tinto better known elsewhere as grenache similar to the red grape garnacha blanca has a pronounced white pepper zesty aroma together with both floral and fruity notes of underripe stone fruits nowhere is this truer than in the catalonian do terra alta which currently boasts 1 400 hectares of garnacha blanca vines with an average age of twenty five years it is claimed that 75 of all garnacha blanca in spain is grown in catalonia and astonishingly a third of global production in the province of tarragona in southern catalonia between the river ebro river and the boundary with aragón the garnacha blanca wines are characterized by complex citrus notes of peach and lemon and a chalk like mineral edge long lasting on the palate perhaps the most undiscovered for the time being spanish white wines are the difficult to pronounce pair of txakoli and treixadura txakoli hails from the basque region and is made from an equally unpronounceable grape variety called hondarribi zuri which produces a zingy mineral driven wine with a touch of spritz on the flavour much like that shown in a young muscadet to continue the tricky linguistics treixadura is another spanish grape commonly found in the ribeiro region in galicia these enticing wines show fresh notes of lime cucumber and stone fruit and are best enjoyed in their youth it is highly unlikely that spanish white wines will ever reach the dizzy heights globally as their blockbuster red relations but if sought out most likely in independent wine retailers they will repay the effort is disputed had returned home to england to retire after successfully governing bengal india for many years he so missed his favourite indian sauce that he commissioned drug store owners john lea and william perrins to come up with a reasonable facsimile which they did successfully their original intent was to keep some of the batch to sell in their store but the fish and vegetable ingredients mixture had such a strong odour they decided otherwise and stored it in their cellar there it lay forgotten for two years until it was rediscovered during a tidy up the batch had aged into a
