they are very prolific this year and i have grown only twelve plants from seed sown in the garden on may 10th as usual because may 10th is the date that my granddad said that is the day to sow runner beans i have no explanation just family folk lore my dad always sowed seeds on may 10th as well my granddad my dad in 154 probably wondering just what useful tips that he can pass on to me over the next few years dad was a mine of information and advice for example when turning the car engine on do not set off straight away but give the oil pump chance ro lubricate the engine i suspect he got that piece of advice from his dad as well anyway the beans i have enjoyed watching them germinate and then race each other to the top of the canes like some sort of olympic bean race event and then begin to produce their pods i get a crop like this just about every five days at the the moment far more than we can eat straight away of course so a lot of them go straight to the freezer i doubt that we will be buying beans again this year which is a good thing because they taste a whole lot better than imported green beans from africa diced sliced and blanched another batch bound for freezer storage that s christmas dinner sorted runner beans are believed to have been brought to the british isles by john tradescant who was head gardener to charles i they originated in the tropical uplands of central america and while it is a perennial in its native land it is a half hardy annual in the uk as the plants are usually killed off by the first autumn frosts when they first arrived they were of out of the way type of place no main roads to it or through it there is a railway station but only one train a day in each direction and only on week days there is a twice weekly street market on thursday and saturday but we were there on a wednesday so it was very quiet a river runs though it the river ancholme a nineteen mile waterway from market rasen to the humber estuary we walked a little way from the town to the nearby marina and i slowed progress down by stopping regularly to pick and eat fresh juicy blackberries rather early this year two thousand years ago the romans reached comments it has been a very good year for cucumbers so far which comes as a bit of a surprise because it is rather early and i haven t got a greenhouse maybe it is global warming or maybe modern varieties are more tolerant of cooler conditions i quite like growing cucumber i check first thing every morning to see how much they have grown overnight they seem to grow overnight i check for all vegetables first thing in the morning with my first cup of tea but the cucumbers are the most prolific how sad is that actually they are not a vegetable but a fruit and this is why taken from a botanical website by the way fruits are defined as the seed bearing structures of a flowering plant vegetables encompass all other plant parts including roots carrots stems celery and leaves spinach a lot of point in growing cucumbers i have to say if i have a good year i might get to harvest twenty to thirty and you can buy big long ones in the supermarket for less than an english pound but i
