helpdesk overcoming internalized aphobia and amatonormativity what is the aspec helpdesk a common struggle a lot of us face is internalized aphobia and or internalized amatonormativity do you have any advice or resources about how to deconstruct and overcome those aro ace chaos here are some of my personal thoughts advice whatever i never really faced internalized acephobia just internalized arophobia so keep that in mind for me at least compulsory sexuality was much less of a thing than amatonormativity a lot of that probably comes down to purity culture but sex in general was never discussed only romance and romance was placed on such a high pedestal like romance was treated as the ultimate type of relationship the very definition and culmination of the concept of love and it sounds so beautiful so when i realized i was ace i at first feared that i wouldn t be able to have that kind of relationship and i eventually consoled myself with the alloace identity i wanted so so badly to be alloromantic and there s nothing wrong with being alloro at all but here s the thing i m aro and i m not romance favorable i m romance averse at times i feel more romance repulsed but amatonormativity had me convinced that being aromantic was bad that not wanting a romantic relationship was a moral failing when a guy asked me out and i realized that i didn t want to date i was distraught i mourned the life that i was supposed to want eventually i realized that i didn t want that life i had just internalized arophobia and amatonormativity to the point that i thought i was supposed to want it and i convinced myself that if i got a romantic relationship i d be proving that i wasn t broken i was okay with being just ace i wasn t okay with being aroace at the time i was a baby aroace i didn t know very much about the spectrum of identities and that aroace people could still have those relationships if they wanted to not that it mattered because i genuinely didn t and don t want those relationships internalized aphobia had just convinced me i was supposed to in the end i think time more than anything helped i thought about how people who were single for other reasons might feel divorcees and widows widowers who didn t want to find a new relationship people who just never found the one and were ok with that and i realized that i was holding myself to a standard i would never hold someone else to i would never call someone who was choosing to be single broken so why was i internalizing those kinds of thoughts i ve grown a lot since then and i try to extend the same kindness and compassion to myself that i do to others and that genuinely has helped me so much not just in terms of accepting myself as aromantic but in genuinely liking who i am as a person in general another thing that helped me was seeing aromantic joy and positivity so if you ve identified that you are struggling with internalized arophobia seek out aro pride and aro joy and aro positivity if you ve identified that you are struggling with internalized acephobia seek out ace pride and ace joy and ace positivity it almost hurt at first it felt unrelatable but eventually i started being like hmm aromanticism doesn t sound so bad eventually i was able to accept my aromanticism and after a few years i got to the point where i was genuinely able to appreciate and celebrate my aromanticism aro ace chaos if you need to find some aro pride and joy and positivity check out this is aromantic joy which is one of my new favorite blogs on this site it s exactly what i needed
