let him go without talking to him as gil is closing the door i walk forward i d like to talk to gabe before he leaves make sure he s ok with this baby thing i explain hoping gil won t ask any questions if he thinks that it s strange he doesn t mention it he only holds the door open for me to walk through and closes the door behind me i stare at the closed door and watch gil walk up the stairs through the window gabe is standing on the porch as if he knew i would follow him he sits down on the bench and stares off into space slowly i sit down next to him trying to think of an easy way to tell him that the baby is not his gabe i m sorry for springing this on you like that i m sure you have questions i start out saying he shakes his head it s my baby cat there s no way it can be his he s 60 years old for sim s sake i stop him before he continues no it is his baby you and i that was one time it was a mistake this is gil s baby it doesn t matter how old he is it s his i say quietly he looks hurt and i want to comfort him but i don t dare reach out to him i turn away and walk into the house i will myself to not look back at him closing the door softly i can t help but sneak one last glance gabe standing on the porch silently watching me i turn off the porch light and walk slowly up the stairs a clean break i don t hear anything from gabe for the next few months if gil notices that i ve been quiet he doesn t mention it i m trying to be a good wife but gil takes better care of me than i do of him he s constantly asking me if i need anything and offering me back rubs even without my job things have been busy i ve started helping gil in the garden and really love working with the plants and getting my hands dirty i see now why he loves it so much he built a planter bed just for me and i ve started growing some of my favorite plants he s also insisted on adding on to the house building a room on for the baby i thought we would just turn the downstairs bedroom into the baby s room but he insists that he or she needs to be closer to our room so he s hired contractors to extend a room out toward the front of the house there is plenty of extra attic space there and he says it won t take much to transform it we even end up adding an extra bathroom just to even out the front addition so now i have a private bath and the baby can use the other one when it gets older sometimes i just sit in the baby s room and wonder what this little person will be like i try to never think of gabe any time his name crosses my mind i try to distract myself today gil distracts me instead catey darling how are you feeling today he asks sweetly i nod my head i m ok a little tired but with all this weight i guess that s to be expected i say as i stand up gil notice a brown envelope with my name on it i don t receive much mail so i hesitate to open it studying the package i notice that it doesn t have a return address i sit the rest of the mail on the table and slowly open the envelope a letter and some photos fall into my hand the photos catch my attention more than the letter because i notice my face in the first one i see shock registers on face as i recognize what the photos are of i flip through the three pictures my mouth hanging open i start to read the letter but hear gil walking in the house i stuff the photos back in the envelope and s 20 years younger and walking with a spring in his step i constantly find him whistling or just staring off into space with a goofy grin on his face he s been treating me as if i were made of glass something special and delicate to take care of his happiness has rubbed off on me and i have almost put gabe out of my thoughts until this evening i know that you said you wanted to wait awhile before telling anyone but i spoke with gabe earlier today and he s leaving town his business is finished and i invited him to dinner tonight and i d like to share our good news with him gil says i can feel asked you here tonight both men look toward me and i can feel the heat filling my face i take several deep breaths and nod my head for gil to continue he takes my hand in his and begins catey and i have some good news i know for a long time you ve been my only child my son that i ve always been so proud of even when we weren t speaking to each other gil couldn t have a bigger smile on his face i sneak a peek at gabe and know he realizes the announcement his father is getting ready to make i can see his jaw clenching and a thin sheen of sweat has appeared on his brow he s working very hard to gil answers it s still pretty early but we wanted to tell you before you left town catey s only about 6 weeks along she thinks she ll go to the doctor in a week or so and get some dates nailed down shocked but he ll come around gil fills up my plate but i can t seem to eat i already have a knot in my stomach i m torn between wanting to keep my cover and also rushing to gabe to make sure he s ok and to explain everything he has to know the baby isn t his i try to put a few bites in my mouth so gil won t worry as gabe comes back to the table we continue the dinner quietly but i can feel gabe work is going well but i m considering quitting and maybe finding something part time the hours are too long and i work 5 days a week i really want to spend more time with gil i feel terrible about what happened with gabe and i want to make it up even though he doesn t know by being the perfect wife and that s hard to do when i m not here most of the time before we sit down to lunch i bring the subject up gil i m thinking of giving up my job and i d like to know what you think i say he looks stunned i thought you loved your job may i ask why you are thinking about quitting i do like my job but i love you and i want to spend more time with you i explain quickly before realizing that s the first time i ve told him that i love him oh catey you ve made me so happy i love you too but i think you already knew that you can work or not whatever you want to do but i d love to spend every moment with you he says i smile and kiss him softly leading him upstairs that monday i put my notice in at my way back to the car steak and dinner long forgot i finally make it home gil looks up from gardening and smiles at me i try to return his smile but a sick feeling overpowers me i run for the house and i barely make it to the bathroom before losing all my lunch from today i wash my face and brush it off as being so upset about gabe the next few days though begin and end the same way with me running to the bathroom several times and not being able to keep anything down i suspect what is wrong but keep hoping its just a stomach bug that s what i tell gil anyway when he questions me about feeling so sick i stop in the local store the next day and buy the test a test that will tell me for sure if i have a stomach bug or if i m pregnant i pace back and forth in the bathroom before taking
