the art complex museum history of the art complex museum volunteers news opportunities contact us menu menu october 2026 a note from the director late september gave us one of our best days and took another one away on september 20th we c elebrated five new exhibit ions at once and the campus was buzzing quilted visions ann brauer marge tucker interpreting the natural contemporary visions of artists too artists cam e from across the country to join in celebrating what the art complex museum does so well giving them space to express themselves freely six days later an early season nor easter caused us to reschedule the inaugural oyster art shuckfest from my 14 years leading waterfire providence i know too well that weather is the biggest challenge in planning outdoor events and we accept it our new date is saturday october 10 with a rain date of sunday the 11th s ame a wesome partners art complex duxbury oyster company and h cole same amazing day of family food and fun bring your friends for this not to be missed special event celebrating the best of duxbury get your tickets here today before they sell out the art complex and more broadly duxbury and the entire south shore sits in a watershed and what happens to that water should be something we all are aware of and care about in august the art complex was accredited as a level i arboretum through arbnet more than 400 plants over a hundred varieties now documented and cared for a s a living outdoor museum this month we open beneath the surface in partnership with the north and south rivers watershed association in which artists respond directly to the rivers marshes and dam removals reshaping this coastline in real time it runs october 11 through november 15 with a reception on thursday october 22 from 5 to 8 and a panel discussion on thursday november 12 with nsrwa s ecologists and river restoration staff and there is now a secret forest trail on the art complex campus well it s not a very well kept secret because if you ask someone at the front desk you may come away with a hint or two about where to start looking a museum is in the business of getting people to look closely at something and then care or at least think about it we have spent more than half of a century doing that with our extraordinary collection of over 8 000 items we are now doing it with a marsh a herring run a stand of trees and a bay that still produces world famous oysters those things are not background scenery for the art they are in as much need of attention documentation and protection as anything hanging on our walls and considerably more urgently if you leave beneath the surface and find yourself looking harder at and thinking more about our water shed and the environment on your way home our small but mighty museum is doing its job we can employ our extraordinary resources to raise awareness but it s our individual collective responsibility to protect our planet for our kids and their kids and so on it all starts with looking learning thinking and caring peter a mello he him his executive director current exhibitions quilted visions ann brauer and marge tucker august 23 november 8 2026 all are very lovely paintings i do wish though that since there was so much information provided by an environmental scientist that some of the artists brought some of the science and environmental issues into their work art complex museum 3 days ago what happens when art and science meet the watershed come take a closer look join us thursday october 22 at 5 00 pm for the opening reception of
