a present need remember god already knows what he will do he sees you he knows your needs and he is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine eph 3 20 so take what you have your five loaves your two fish your faith your questions and bring them to him closing prayer father here in the early days of the second half of this year we lift our eyes to you the maker of heaven and earth the one who sees our needs before we speak them you know the hills before us the questions within us and the places where our strength feels small and our resources inadequate thank you that your resources are limitless your wisdom perfect your love constant and your strength unfailing teach us to trust you when the future feels uncertain and in all seasons remind us that you already know what you will do help us to bring what we have our loaves our fish our faith our fears and place them in your hands strengthen our hearts steady our steps and fill us with hope that does not depend on a comment introduction in today s blog post we reflect on the simple sacred practice of play we will explore the importance of play for adults through scripture reflection and childhood memories we will also consider how jesus invites us into childlikeness and how practices of creativity movement and delight can strengthen our emotional physical and spiritual well being remembering childhood play children rarely understand the importance of what they are doing when they play they simply enter joy they do not know and would not care even if we told them that play is shaping them that through play they develop imagination dexterity resilience and the ability to work with others that through play they learn to share negotiate resolve conflict and try again i often smile broad and deep even chuckle at memories of children at play and of my own childhood moments of play the abandon the lack of concern about dust or sweat on clothing or skin the heat that did not matter the freedom of running hard breathless and joyful play that was not scheduled or justified it simply happened these experiences however are rare for many of us who carry the weight of adulthood responsibilities expectations and a quiet internal tightening that develops over time often outside our awareness thinking of jesus declaration in john 10 10 amp i came that they may have and enjoy life and have it in abundance to the full till it overflows we begin to see play not as an activity reserved for children but as a spiritual practice woven into the abundant life jesus offers author and licensed professional counselor josh spurlock describes play as a vital god given part of human life that includes joy creativity movement and sabbath rest neuroscience affirms that play strengthens emotional health and social connection evidence that we are biologically designed for joy in christian life play becomes more than leisure it reflects god s rhythm of renewal making intentional space for play becomes an act of worship that nurtures gratitude relationships and the abundant life god desires for us play in its truest form is not an escape from the challenges of life rather than guard themselves from it one of the ways we return to this posture is through play the spiritual power of play as adults play lifts stress stirs creativity and strengthens connection it reminds us that delight is healing scripture affirms this truth again and again the joy of the lord is your strength neh 8 10 niv joy is not a luxury it is spiritual fortification you are fearfully meant to be lived not merely understood play becomes holy when it is practiced it becomes formative when it is embodied here are several tangible ways to step into holy play this week return to childlikeness identify one area where adulthood has made you overly serious or guarded ask god to soften that place choose joy as strength engage in one playful activity something creative lighthearted or fun as a spiritual practice honor your body and mind move dance draw laugh imagine let your body remember joy practice sabbath delight add a moment of play into your rest rhythm reconnect with community invite someone into a playful moment a walk a shared laugh a simple game receive wonder pay attention to beauty nature creativity let wonder draw you toward god these are not
