me uncomfortable i feel like a freer society where people get hurt is probably a better risk than oppression but at a certain point we need to accept that clear minded entirely unpressured consent is a pipe dream because we are animals with a lot of things that influence us i don t really know how to reconcile that like i think about risk aware consensual kink which i mostly support over safe sane consensual but like you can t be aware of every risk and some risks are deemed by society as a bit too far like suicide and i dont entirely disagree with that because if you have depression that tells think there s an easy answer to it i don t think trying to reason or persuade someone out of suicide with words is unethical or a violation of their autonomy that s part of our social responsibility of someone s jacket when they try to jump in front of a train is unethical because they re doing it in front of you and i believe i have a right to not see someone die violently on a crowded train station platform is it unethical to prevent all suicide i don t know is it possible that an adult of sound mind in a society that meets all their needs and doesn t coerce them could still be so inherently unhappy that they actually don t want to live i don t know i don t think it s possible to know at least without building that society first i do wanna clarify the point of the hypothetical is less can someone want to die without coercion and more like just trying to figure out where the line is how much outside influence means its okay to interfere if we can nail down whether killing yourself is a morally neutral act absent all other factors or whether you owe it to society to stick around it would give us a starting point for whether its okay to interfere with other factors involved i like your reasoning here about how reaching out to someone by talking to them is clearly not controlling and how preventing violence in public is justified on the grounds that it is public but what about say if you found someone mid suicide attempt and rushed them to a hospital to save them is that ethical what about less serious issues like if you stage an intervention for someone who is spending all their time at the casino and as safyro pointed out in the replies how much are other people a mitigating factor i think for instance if you have dependents other people definitely have a moral obligation to make sure you re okay and able to keep supporting them but just how much social obligation does one have before it just becomes an excuse to control them like parents shouldn t a snake and can t just drive yourself to the hospital or call emergency services then it seems the best thing you can do is not try to treat it in anyway and just walk calmly to the nearest spot you last got cell service or just back to your car okay so here s the snakebite first aid 101 that every australian child is taught like ten billion times if you get bitten by a snake try to get a look at the snake remember what it looks like this will help emergency services get you the correct antidote as quickly as possible remain as calm as you possibly can the faster your heart is beating the less time you have if the bite is on an arm hand or leg foot bandage the area this should be done immediately bandage it firmly the same way that you would for a sprain you are attempting to minimise bloodflow out of the bitten tissue if you are not alone it s best to have somebody else do the bandaging a tourniquet is unnecessary in anything but the most dire circumstances all this will do is lose you a limb for no reason if it is safe to do so sit down immediately and keep the snakebite below your heart opposite as for a sprain you want the bite lower not higher you can rest your back on a tree or something but it s best not to lie down this is to keep your heart rate and blood pressure as low as possible and make it as unlikely as possible that the venom will be pumped around your body call emergency services if you don t have a signal send somebody else to find one and call emergency services do not go walking off to do this yourself if somebody else is available to do it you want to do as little moving around as possible if you are completely alone and have no access to emergency services you are going to have to make the best decision you can and take a risk if you can alert others without moving this is ideal but you may have to get up and move if you re in a snakeridden area it s best to never go alone or make sure you have a radio or phone and signal in addition to wearing snakeproof clothing that way you can avoid this scenario being alone and unable to call for help with a snakebite is the worst case scenario but it s not a death sentence bandage the bite exert as little physical effort as possible and if you have access to a vehicle get to it as directly as you can to minimise walking remember that the vast majority of deaths by snakebite are due to people not knowing these steps correct first aid for snakebites gives you four to six hours of time even clumsy or incorrect application can buy you two hours most people who are bitten by snakes are
