years back i visited the grave of anne brontë in scarborough today i revisited haworth the village where anne and her sisters charlotte and emily lived here in the parsonage the three women wrote their famous novels it is now a museum to honour the great influence they had on english literature i know charlotte s novel jane eyre better than i know the others it proves critical to the plot of one of my favourite fantasy novels jasper fforde s imaginative the eyre affair it is while on a school visit to the brontë parsonage museum that the heroine thursday next inadvertently stumbles into the very novel itself breaking through the veil between the real world and the equally real literary world if you haven t read fforde s take on jane eyre then please do you have a treat in store i have not yet read anne s novel the tenant of wildfell hall it is on a bookcase at home filed under good intentions i am currently enjoying if enjoyment is the right word for such a darkly gothic story emily s most famous work wuthering heights the story of the destructive love between cathy and heathcliff is well known whether due to having seen one of the many film or television adaptations or listened to kate bush singing of wiley windy moors fortunately the moors were bathed in sunshine today as i enjoyed the bus rides from halifax to hebden bridge to haworth to keighley and back again to halifax whilst giving a respectful nod to sally wainwright s happy valley and diarist anne lister s aka gentleman jack former home at shibden hall bonds of friendship on august 14 2025 by beacreativewriter 7 comments it is the last night of the 2025 summer school i have spent the last four days in an unreal bubble separated from the real world surrounded by those with whom i share a common interest tomorrow we leave to go our separate ways i have learned a lot and gained inspiration from the many courses and workshops but above all swanwick allows me to strengthen the bonds of friendship formed with my fellow delegates i feel energised by being with people who since my first swanwick in 2016 have become friends tonight was the final farewell and presentation of prizes tomorrow i will find somewhere to stop for a few days as i head towards home i m not leaving empty handed though i ll be taking my best actor in a drama swannie with me abecedarian on august 13 2025 by beacreativewriter leave a comment i learned a new poetic form yesterday an abecedarian it is a 26 line poem which follows the alphabet either every line begins with a letter a z or at least contains a word beginning with a letter in alphabetical order i suppose it could be described as a type of acrostic presumably i could describe my blog posts as abecedarian continuing as they do in alphabetical order swanwick is full of opportunities to learn new things this year i have followed courses and events which have focused on poetry although not exclusively so specialist course 4 parts alison chisholm learning from the laureates short courses 2 parts emma purshouse and steve pottinger poetry competitions also rob gee own the stage workshops bear stephenson writing for performance and drama evening speakers simon hall a writing life is a storytelling life emma purshouse and steve pottinger life in a 21st century garrett the admin years dr russell wate how to catch a murderer evening entertainments prose open mic listening only i took my name out as the event was oversubscribed poetry open mic i performed little old ladies which was well received fancy dress disco i didn t dress up although many did following the wild west theme possibly one of the most challenging things this week but also the most enjoyable was volunteering for page to stage p2s i was cast to play the part of angela in a dramatic monologue for the love of shopping written by belinda brady and directed by val dunmore it was hard work but oh so fulfilling it has been a busy few days here at swanwick and it isn t finished yet although sadly tomorrow is the last day zero on august 12 2025 by beacreativewriter leave a comment time to reflect and reset i blog alphabetically working my way through the alphabet for a prompt word or title completing a full cycle and reaching the letter z is my cue to reset hence this current blogpost z for zero is a reflection i no longer blog weekly only if i have been somewhere or done something worthy of note amazingly this current cycle from a z began during swanwick 2022 in those three years 25 blogs were posted from whitley bay durham scarborough dundee london bromsgrove macclesfield harrogate and south shields this also covers the time since i retired in march 2024 so perhaps i can reflect on what has happened since then i have found support from north tyneside writers circle i entered pieces into two circle anthologies i was highly commended in both the story tyne and poetry tyne 2024 competitions last month i had a story published in the people s friend and now i have returned to swanwick writers summer school years gone by on august 11 2025 by beacreativewriter leave a comment it is sobering to be part of something that began before i was born made up as it is of individuals the swanwick of 76 years ago must therefore be different from the swanwick of today each year new people join while others for various reasons drop out yet my experience of swanwick over the last nine years is that it feels reassuringly the same but at the same time it is excitingly fresh each year new courses are available and new writers bring with them new voices and insights today has been a busy start to the week beginning with lift up your pens after breakfast the first two parts of my chosen specialist course this year i have chosen the poetry option focusing on learning from the laureates later i attended a workshop on writing for performance and drama put my name down to act in page to stage the evening speakers were steve pottinger and emma purshouse then i joined the audience for the prose open mic already i am exhausted x the unknown destination on august 10 2025 august 10 2025 by beacreativewriter 2 comments yesterday i was caught in a long queue of traffic several miles behind a crash which caused a temporary closure of the a1 m unable to go any further we switched off our engines and got out of our vehicles cars lorries transit vans caravans motorhomes there is a camaraderie which develops in such circumstances strangers strike up conversations all of us had different destinations but for the next hour or so none of us were going anywhere but where we were destination x i m pleased to say i finally made it taking two hours to travel just 17 miles to the travelodge where i had booked to spend the night after a relaxed morning i continued on to reach my ultimate destination this afternoon swanwick writers summer school this is my seventh visit to the annual writing conference which has been held here since 1949 at the hayes conference centre in the village of swanwick near alfreton in derbyshire i knew nobody else when i first came in 2016 now many are long standing friends united by our shared passion of writing like the eclectic mix of vehicles on the a1 m yesterday the 200 attendees of whom 57 are first time attendees are all very different we write different things fiction and non fiction poetry and prose scripts for stage screen and gaming manuals graphic novels and comics some are published others not some write for fun others for money for some it is a hobby for others a full time career we have different aspirations as to where our writing will take us but for the next 6 days none of us chose to be anywhere but here this is our destination x today was spent catching up with old friends and starting to make new friends tomorrow the work begins a total of 32 courses and workshops to choose between plus speakers and various types of entertainment events i say work but if you are doing something you enjoy then it really isn t work at all wren a small bird gifting me a small but very welcome win on march 28 2025 march 28 2025 by beacreativewriter leave a comment thanks to penny blackburn for the image good news one of my stories was judged highly commended at last night s story tyne awards ceremony at north shields library 76 stories were whittled down to a shortlist of 16 by the staff of north tyneside libraries and mine was placed in the final top 6 as judged by vic watson and crime writer rob scraggs who also writes as robert rutherford every win is a real boost to a writer s morale but i learned two important things from last night s win lesson 1 never try to guess what the judges will choose i entered two stories to this competition and hunting the wren was the one i thought the weaker of them i was proven wrong lesson 2 submit your entry or you don t stand a chance of winning at all the first draft of this story was written in 2020 for a competition where the theme was vision i didn t think it was good enough so didn t submit back then who knows i might have won a prize five years ago but i m very happy to have this win now and look forward to visiting the bound bookshop at whitley bay to spend my prize so now on to the next competition in fact the one which i failed to enter five years ago the deadline is three days time monday 31st march at midnight i have a bad habit of taking things to the wire but yes i will definitely submit my story this time around victorious on march 14 2025 march niggling doubt many of us experience imposter syndrome are we perhaps fooling ourselves thinking we can write so we keep our writing private we are reluctant to submit it or ashamed to let anyone else read it we find excuses to keep editing and tweaking never letting it go which is where free writing competitions can be useful why not submit what do we have to lose last year i entered two poems into poetry tyne a competition run by north tyneside libraries i don t consider myself a poet but thought i would give it a go anyway the award ceremony was last night an amazing 167 poems had been submitted by approximately 50 poets entries were judged by rob walton and elaine cusack and to my amazement my poem filmography was highly commended and it feels so good uplifted on january 17 2025 by beacreativewriter leave a comment it is wonderful to start my writing year with news of an acceptance this was the sale of a short story to the people s friend submitted on tuesday and accepted on thursday the story is one i had been working on for a long time tweaking it rewriting then tweaking again and again in the end i decided to stop playing around and submit reader i sold it i had a lovely email from one of the editors at the magazine who gave me the news and brightened my day definitely a happy dance moment calstock viaduct over the river tamar cornwall telling tales on october 27 2024 october 27 2024 by beacreativewriter leave a comment let me tell you a tale it s what writers do whether by poem flash fiction short story or whatever format the writer has chosen we tell tales but beware a fabulous plot can be ruined by a poor choice of delivery conversely a beautiful well crafted piece of prose may turn out to be all style with no substance i acknowledge my own shortcoming here rather than any failure on behalf of the author but i often experience such disappointment with literary fiction whereas genre fiction has to keep the plot moving forward gather around young writers and old some people are natural storytellers even from a young age able to spin a yarn that will keep others enthralled others of us know what we want to convey but struggle to do so in a coherent logical and above all engaging fashion yet it is a skill which can be learned that is the reason writers are advised to also be readers to immerse themselves in the written word examine what others do well and also to work out what is missing if a story be poorly told they ll inspire you to tell your story reet well writing groups can help with this encouraging critiquing inspiring advising this week saw the launch of folk s tales the second anthology published by north tyneside writers circle the anthology includes a wide range of short fiction and poetry based around the folk theme folk music and folk singers stories about ordinary and extraordinary people about families and the folks back home traditional folk myths new and reimagined mythology children s fairy tales and other tales much too scary for children to hear there are some talented writers amongst the group and it was a pleasure to hear them read extracts from what they had written my contribution
