appropriation aanii jess here i wanted to quickly write a summarized post about why cultural appreciation doesn t equal cultural appropriation particularly in reference to supporting indigenous creators and makers i am an ojibwe woman who makes artwork beadwork and dreamcatchers purchasing an authentic piece from me or other indigenous people with the intent to understand and use appropriately does not cross the lines into appropriation if you respect the teaching the origins and the culture and storytelling behind my work that s all i can ask for what matters is that you re not purchasing appropriated non indigenous made indigenous traditional crafts there is mass manufacturing of dreamcatchers for example they do not work as intended they are not woven with the spirit of the teachings and not made by someone ojibwe indigenous they are stolen from my culture and unfairly profited upon i can only truly speak for myself but upon further research and talking with other indigenous folks the consensus is very similar non indigenous people are welcome here and your support means everything i truly encourage you to do research before buying understand what appropriate use is and support indigenous makers who are fairly compensated for their work believe me i wouldn t be able to do what i love without the support of non indigenous people i appreciate you beyond
