to no avail leaving these great old games that started it all forgotten to time and difficult to run on modern systems however recently a rather talented fan has created an all in one gog like installer containing civ1 civ2 gold tot that installs cd free standalone copies of the games that amazingly fully work on modern operating systems with all videos music intact and even has a mod only a few weeks ago was i posting about the crazy command conquer 16bit atari st port well now we ve got an even crazier port going on a 8bit demake port to the commodore 64 of westwood s rts classic dune 2 i m working away on releasing my civilization 2 dune 2 dynasty scenario in the coming months so i ve got dune 2 on the brain at the moment making seeing this super cool and i look forward to trying it out in an emulator considering there s the brilliant pico 8 undune 2 port out there i guess i shouldn t be too surprised however there s a different between playing dune 2 on a fictional simulated console and a real retro 1980s 8bit console so i can t even imagine all the crazy tricks required to get this working in such limited memory the c64 s greatest feature was probably it s opened up my latest pc gamer mag and was stunned to see my doom hexen total conversion mods on the page in front of me i ve been getting pc gamer uk magazines imported since i was a boy in the early 90s and i never thought i d ever create anything that would grace their pages but then it happened well it s happened again guys yesterday there i am opening up my latest pc gamer magazine issue 419 march 2026 and nearly dropped the mag in shock as there was my metro s civilization 2 heroes of might magic 2 mod and my other civ2 mods cnc red alert dune smac etc looking back at me the article even covers my lost civ2 mods preservation project and campaign to get civ2 on to steam gog to kick off a new civ2 modding renaissance however this time it wasn t a single page at the back of the mag in the mods section this time it was a full 2 page spread near the front of the mag in the special report news section unbelievable pc gamer has always been one of the largest gaming magazines in the world so to grace their front pages is just an incredible honour when i look at all the latest aaa games battling for good spots and reviews in the later half of the mag and see my silly stuff there near the front it s just ridiculous but ladies gentlemen that is the power of nostalgia when you take people back to their childhoods when they escaped the struggles of rl and turned on their computers and went on adventures in far away fantasy lands it s like tapping back into pure joy i love it when people from all corners of the world write to me to say nice things about something i made that touched their heart but when large publications cover my work it just doesn t even seem real haha obviously i was interviewed for this back in 2025 but after more than 6 months i d all but given up on it making it into the mag and i hadn t heard from anyone about seeing it either so it ended up being a complete surprise again haha apparently it s made it to the pc gamer us issue 407 they were combined with voxel mods that converted all the 2d sprites into 3d objects that bettered handled the new lighting it s been a while since i last posted about duke nukem as while the leaked sequel duke nukem forever restoration project continues along i haven t checked in on the good old duke nukem 3d modding scene in a while so i figured i d see if it s had the same treatment and sure enough it now has a voxel mod and a ray tracing mod being developed by talented fans firstly last year a talented fan named cheello introduced a voxel mod converting all of duke nukem 3d s sprites into 3d voxels making everything feel far more connected to the world around them while it s noticeable with monsters you re circling it s even more obvious with decorations that would always face you posted about on the skyblivion and skywind projects here so let s see how they re going for the uninitiated these 2 great and huge fan projects are converting oblivion and morrowind into the elder scrolls skyrim engine heavily upgrading remaking them in the process while the official remasters look to port the original games into modern graphics engines these fan remakes look to change and expand almost every aspect of the game worlds and merge them with skyrims polished gameplay systems firstly let s look at skyblivion which was supposed to be released at the end of 2025 but sadly they were unable to meet their own deadline and it s looking unlikely that they ll get it out this year either however a lot of work has been done and their latest update videos are stunning as always secondly let s look at skywind while they have made no promises on when they ll release they ve been chugging along and their latest updates show that most things are in a finished or near finished release of my command conquer tiberian africa scenario and me currently working on my civ2 red alert 2 siege of new york scenario i ve got all things command conquer on the brain and am noticing some pretty cool fan projects out there and of course i m always keeping an eye on cool homebrew ports to retro consoles and this one is a good one somehow a talented developer indyjo has ported the original command conquer to the atari st sure enough you need a pretty maxed out version of the st it plays a bit slow and takes a hit with the resolution and 16 colour limit however the fact that it still looks and sounds as good as it does on an old 80s 16bit home computer is remarkable there are plans to improve it s speed and reduce ram needs so it can be played on regular st machines so i conquer renegade was one of those games that kind of missed the mark at the time but became a cult favourite as it allowed fans of the cnc universe to battle it out from a first person perspective and jump into their favourite vehicles on the battle field considering the huge success of the battlefield series it s a shame that renegade wasn t more popular too instead it got caught up in the whole westwood ea mess and a sequel was canned so naturally the fans stepped up to fill the void and do their own sequel while there s been a number of attempts over the years the big one renegade x has 2026 tapepunk retro vhs aesthetic mod somehow makes cyberpunk 2077 look even more realistic wow this really messes with my brain a clever modder has created a retro vhs tape aesthetic mod for cyberpunk 2077 that makes it look disturbingly realistic it s as if someone used an old vhs camcorder in the future and sent the tape back to the past haha you probably wouldn t really want to
